Christmas Place was Osborne's home between 1976 and 1986. The house, which dates from 1907, is at Marsh Green, near Edenbridge in Kent, with large acreage, woodland and a lake. Osborne bought the house when his marriage to Jill Bennett was collapsing, and he lived there with the journalist and critic Helen Dawson who in 1978 became wife number five. Whilst in residence he gave expansive annual garden parties known as the Cranmer's Summer Ball attended by writers, actors and the local villagers (see lot 9). He sold the house in 1986 when he moved with Helen to The Hurst in Shropshire. (see John Osborne, Anger is not About..., Peter Whitebrook, p. 308)
