The group photograph was taken in 1971 to promote that year's season at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, and shows four dramatists whose plays would be performed. From left to right: David (now Sir David) Hare, John Osborne (foreground and bearded), E.A. Whitehead and David Storey. Most of Osborne's plays, of course, had up to that date been premiered at the Court, including West of Suez, his play for that season, starring Ralph Richardson. Hare, who was and still is a great admirer of Osborne, acknowledged him as 'the gatekeeper'.
