A WWI MILITARY CROSS MEDAL GROUP AWARDED TO MAJOR RALPH MONTACUTE BRIND M.C. (1881-1916) comprising 1914-18 War Medal, 1914-15 Star, Military Cross, 1911 Delhi Durbar medal and miniatures (8)Provenance: By direct family descent.Literature: Major Ralph Montacute Brind, MC, 37th Dogras, Indian Army. He was the son of General Sir James Brind, GCB, late Royal Artillery, and his fifth wife Lady Eleanor Elizabeth Lumley Brind (nee Burne). Baptised on 2 Jan 1882 at St Mary's Church, Wimbledon. Gentleman Cadet at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Commissioned into the Indian Army (unattached list) as a 2nd Lieutenant on 28 Jul 1900. Spent his probationary year with a British Regiment in India. He joined the 37th Dogras on 9 Oct 1901. Promoted to Lieutenant on 28 Oct 1902, to Captain on 28 Jul 1909 and to Major on 1 Sep 1915 [London Gazette: 13 Apr 1917]. His Regiment was stationed at Jhelum, India (now Punjab, Pakistan) when WW1 started. They were mobilised and deployed to Mesopotamia, landing in Basra on 8 Dec 1915. Major Brind was killed in action on 2 Feb 1916. He was awarded the Military Cross [London Gazette: 14 Jan 1916] and was mentioned in despatches. He was buried in the Amara War Cemetery, Al 'Amarah, Maysan, Iraq.Taken from www.findagrave.com
A very good Edwardian canteen of silver Hanoverian rat tail pattern flatware - Joseph Rodgers and Sons, Sheffield, all of the silver pieces with engraved initial 'A', containing 12 x table forks; 12 x soup spoons; 12 x dessert forks; 12 x dessert spoons; 10 x tea spoons (two deficient); 6 x table spoons; 2 x sauce ladles; 4 x knife rests; a soup ladle; and a pair of sugar tongs (total silver weight 4373g); the canteen also containing 12 x silver and mother of pearl fruit knives and forks (gross weight 677.5g); 12 x silver and ivory fish knives and forks (gross weight 1175.5g); 12 x steel and ivory table knives; 12 x steel and ivory dessert knives; and a five piece steel and ivory carving set, in a four drawer mahogany and brass canteen with rebated handles and original key. (LWH 54 x 41.5 x 32.75cm) (ivory registration QDXZN5SX) * This canteen was originally purchased by the vendor's grandfather, Lt. Frederick Percy Atherton, Royal Army Pays Corps and later Royal Army Pay Department, who served during WW1. His medals were sold in these rooms on 15th April 2023, lot 168.
A WW1 pair oddly named for 'Maj Gen A.G.Dallas. Capt D.A.G.Dallas Jacob's Horse 1916-' with miniatures and a 1937 Coronation medal (5). Condition - fair British War Medal MAJ. GEN. A.G. DALLAS. engraved in standard form; what follows (CAPTAIN D.A.G. DALLAS JACOBS HORSE 1916.17) is stippled/stipple engraved and incongruous. A WW1 silver sweethearts brooch from HMS Caryfort modelled as a torpedo, hallmarked for Birmingham 1916, 5.5cm. HMS Carysfort was a C-class light cruiser built for the Royal Navy during World War I. She was one of six ships of the Caroline sub-class and was completed in 1915. Assigned to the Grand Fleet, the Harwich Force, and the Dover Patrol during the war, the ship served as a flagship for part of the war. Her only known combat was a short battle against German torpedo boats in the English Channel. Condition - fair to good.

Troopship "Aragon" later torpedeoed off Alexandria with the loss of 10 officers and 596 men on 30th December 1917. Additionally, images of the Procession of the Holy Carpet in Cairo en route to Mecca.
