Lt. Gen. John Maunsell's copy.- [Acts] & Rules and Articles for the better government of his Majesty's Horse and Foot Guards, 2 parts in 1, woodcut royal arms to first title, inter-leaved with occasional contemporary ink notes (faded in places), some water- or damp-staining, occasional spotting, lightly browned, contemporary limp marbled boards, spine worn, soiled, rubbed and scuffed, 8vo, Dublin, Boulter Grierson, 1765. *** Lieutenant General John Maunsell's copy, with his annotations. Maunsell (1724-1795), fought at Culloden and the battles of the Plains of Abraham in Quebec in 1759, and participated in the victory over the French under Montcalm. He died in New York, and is buried in Trinity Church cemetery, Manhattan. Provenance: 'This book came with the accounts of major General John Maunsell, British Army, French and Indian War and the Revolution. Without doubt the two are General Maunsell's' (20th century note loosely inserted).

Broadside.- Bread riots.- Lamentation (The) of the sorrowful Cornfactors, Badgers, Farmers, Millers, Bakers, Huxters. &c. &c. for the Loss of the Enormous Profits on Corn and Flour, printed broadside, 2 woodcut illustrations at head, faint spotting, laid onto paper, c.320 x 210 mm., Nottingham, S. Tupman, [c.1800]. *** Rare. Seemingly unrecorded. A number of bread riots took place across England during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries as a result of poor harvests and the war with France. Napoleon's continental blockade of Britain preventing the import of wheat and grain couple with the poor harvests, pushed the coast of flour and therefore the cost of a loaf of bread to an all time high.

Romanae Ecclesiae, libri tres, non ante in Germania impressi, printer's woodcut device to title, early ink ownership inscriptions to title and front endpaper (verso) head, woodcut initials, contemporary vellum, blue-stained edges, faded, [VD16 R 2585], 8vo, Cologne, Arnold Birckmann, 1557. *** First German edition, printed in the Catholic stronghold of Cologne, of this ceremonial on the inner workings of the Papacy, including election of the Pope, crowning of an emperor, canonisation of saints, the Sistine Chapel and others. Never originally intended for publication when composed in 1488, much of its content still highly secret, the work's first publication 1516 caused outrage in some quarters and attempted suppression but it came to be a seminal text with many subsequent editions.

Law.- Derbyshire.- Charles II (King of England) [Decision relating to a land dispute in the Belper, Chevin and Holland [sic] wards of Derbyshire], broadside, woodcut decorative initial, folds, piece out of lower margin, little spotted, verso lightly soiled, creased, lightly browned, a wide-margined copy, 415 x 323mm., no printer, 19th June, 1663. *** Seemingly unrecorded broadside giving the decision in a land dispute between William, Earl of Newcastle and Sirs William Smyth & Thomas Hook.

Astrologiae nova methodus, 3 parts in 1 vol., second edition, woodcut device on title, 5 volvelles over 3 figures only, all losely inserted, with ?later marker threads, damp-staining to head, modern half calf, spine rubbed and faded, folio, [Houzeau and Lancaster 5217], n.p., 1654. *** The second edition of this curious astrological work, printed in the same year as the first. The first edition was suppressed and burned after some of its predictions were deemed heretical.

Curll, 1728 *** Scarce. A curious work covering demons, geniis and 'familiar spirits', a discourse on second sight, a discussion of the existence of spirits and witches, dreams, spectres, omens and apparitions, enchantment, necromancy inspired from the life of Mr Duncan Campbell, the contemporaneously famous Scottish-born deaf and mute soothsayer. A reissue of the 1720 'Life of...', with 'Verses to Mr. Campbell' and 'A remarkable passage of an apparition 1665' (together 33pp.) bound before the 'Life of... Duncan Campbell'. Also includes a tract by Dr Wallis entitled 'The Method of Teaching Deaf and Dumb Persons to Read, Write and Understand a Language'.
Cookery.- Lusting after the cook.- Beautiful Cookey, printed slip song, hand-coloured (in muted tones) woodcut vignette at head, woodcut tail-piece, couple of marginal tears, that at foot resulting in piece almost detached, lightly browned, 253 x 93mm., Birt, 39 Great St. Andrew Street, Seven Dials, [c.1850]. *** Rare, with only one copy recorded by WorldCat (BL). A 'saucy' slip song with much cookery themed innuendo. Thomas Birt worked out of 39 Great St. Andrew St. from 1824-1841, succeeded by Ann, Mary, and George Birt, who were variously at the same address until 1851.
Leuven printing.- St. Isidorus Hispalensis. De officiis ecclesiasticis libri duo, 1564, bound with Pope Innocent III. De contemptu mundi, woodcut printer's device final leaf verso, 1574, and also St. Ildefonsus Toletanus. De illibata virginitate sanctae genitricis Dei, Mariae, liber unus. Sancti Illefonsi vita, 1569, together 3 works in 1, each title with woodcut printer's device, woodcut initials, first title and front endpaper with early ink ownership inscriptions, slight trimming generally to lower margins, sometimes affecting catchwords or signatures, contemporary vellum, upper cover soiled at foot, yapp edges, also with contemporary divisional markers in vellum at fore-edges, 16mo, Leuven, Hieronymus Welleus. *** A sammelband of three scarce religious works published by Hieronymus Welleus. Neither USTC or WorldCat list copies in the BL for any of these three editions.
Vergilius (Polydorus) Polydori Vergilii Urbinatis De inuentoribus rerum libri tres nouiter impressi emendatique quam diligentissime quibusdam additis, woodcut initials, of which 3 ten-lines, some early ink notes to margins, upper hinge cracked and front endpaper working loose, eighteenth century vellum-backed patterned-paper-covered boards, a few tiny wormholes to spine, 4to, [Edit16 CNCE 49715], Venice, Johannes Tacuinus de Tridino, 1516. *** An attractive Venetian edition which, like the first edition of 1499, consists of the first three books on the 'origin of things' including from the gods, man and languages, to wine, marriage, medicine, poetry, geography and law. It notably includes an account of the origin of printing, attributing its birth to Peter Schoeffer, rather than Gutenberg.

In 1762 Hume learned that Rousseau wanted to relocate to England. Accordingly, he found him lodgings and secured a pension for him from George III. However, things soon turned sour, with Rousseau accusing Hume of plotting his humiliation and disgrace. A pamphlet war ensued.
