Walter Dexel (München 1890 - Braunschweig 1973). 1924 II. 1924. Holzschnitt. 17 x 13,5 cm. R. u. mit Bleistift sign. und dat. W. Dexel 24 II, unter Glas gerahmt, ungeöffnet. - Deutscher Maler, Graphiker, Designer und Kunsthistoriker. D. studierte 1914-19 in München Kunstgeschichte, besuchte aber auch eine Zeichenschule. Nach dem I. Weltkrieg arbeitete er als umtriebiger Leiter des Jenaer Kunstvereins. Er stand mit dem Bauhaus in Verbindung und stellte 1923-27 auch mit der avantgardistischen 'Novembergruppe' in Berlin aus. Mit den Erfahrungen als Werbegestalter, die er in Jena gesammelt hatte, machte er sich 1926 in Frankfurt selbständig. Er betätigte sich bald auch als Designer, u.a. für WMF. Ab 1928 unterrichtete er an verschiedenen kunstgewerblichen Akademien und Schulen in Magdeburg, Berlin u. Braunschweig; während des 'Dritten Reiches' wurde er zeitweilig entlassen und seine Werke als 'entartet' aus Ausstellungen entfernt. Erst 1962 begann er wieder mit der künstlerischen Tätigkeit. Nach einer kurzen kubistischen Anfangsphase prägte D. Anfang der 1920er Jahre einen konkret-konstuktivistischen Stil aus, der sich von den Kollegen wie Mondrian und Doesburg von der Künstlergruppe 'De Stijl' durch größere Formenvielfalt und eine reich abgestufte Palette unterscheidet.
