Gordon McQueen 9ct 1973-74 Division I League Championship winners plaque inscribed CHAMPIONS DIVISION I, 1973-74, LEEDS UNITED GORDON McQUEEN, mounted on teak with easel stand, in original fitted caseLeeds United won their 2nd League Champions this season with 62 points, Liverpool being runners-up on 57 pointsThe following lots 178 to 210 relate to the career of Gordon McQueenProvenance Gordon McQueen thence by family decent Gordon McQueen was born in Kilbirnie, Scotland in 1952 and, as a young sportsman he excelled with his first love being football, and he marked his first steps to stardom with local side Largs Thistle before coming to the attention of St. Mirren, where he would cut his teeth in the Scottish Leagues, making 57 appearances before coming to the attention of Don Revie and Leeds United.Jack Charlton was coming to the end of his illustrious playing career and taking his infamous black book with him, so the Elland Road football side needed to bring a defender to the Club capable of filling Big Jack’s huge boots, and McQueen, it was decided, was the man for the job, and a £30,000 bargain fee brought him over the border and to West Yorkshire’s finest. He played a key part in securing the League Title for Leeds in 1973-74, a powerhouse in defence throughout, and it was little surprise that he was called up for his first Scotland cap in 1974, going on to make 30 international appearances over a decade for country. His first season also saw him gain a runner up medal in the European Cup Winners Cup, and the same would happen again in the Final of All Finals when Leeds lost in Paris to Bayern Munich under controversial circumstances- sadly Gordon missed out on playing as he suspended following being sent off in the semi-final in the match against Barcelona. In 1978, after 141 appearances, Manchester United came calling, and £500,000 saw him cross the Pennines to the Red Devils, a move he just could not turn down, and it would prove a wise one indeed, making 184 appearances in the famous shirt and playing on the losing side in the 1979 F.A.Cup Final, finally adding a Winners medal to his collection after beating Brighton following a replay in 1983.A season in the Hong Kong League with Seiko saw him finally return home to coach, firstly with Airdrieonians’ and then back where his pro career started with St Mirren until the call came from close friend and former teammate Bryan Robson to join the Riverside Revolution at Boro, a period that saw two promotions, a controversial relegation and two Final appearances during his time there as reserve and first team coach, departing with Robson in 2001.He took a change of career direction as quickly and smoothly as he intercepted a pass, joining Soccer Saturday as one of its anchor pundits, where his knowledge and passion for the game was respected by colleagues and viewers alike.Gordon sadly passed away far too young in June 2023, and two Clubs normally fiercely opposed jointly mourned the passing of one of their greats.

David McCreery 9ct gold Manchester United 1977 F.A. Cup Winners medal, in its original blue presentation box from Fattorini and Sons of Birmingham, with original ring suspension, no year engraved on the obverse and the players name engraved on the reverse.McCreery came on as substitute for Gordon Hill in the 81st minute of the game, which finished in a 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Wembley on May 21st 1977.The following lots 288 to 359 relate to the career of David McCreery David McCreery was born in Northern Ireland in 1957 and came to the notice of the Red Devils at an early age, signing for them in 1974.His path to the first team was a swift one at a time of great change for the Manchester Giants- the days of Matt Busby and his great sides had ended, and United looked to rebuild to herald a new era to Old Trafford. It’s a testimony to his talents, as by 1975-6 he had graced the Wembley turf as part of the F.A. Cup Final side that lost to Southampton by way of the now famous Bobby Stokes goal for the Saints, but fortune smiled on the Irishman in the Final of 1976-77 when he walked away with a Winners medal. The quest for a permanent place in a starting 11 took him next to Q.P.R. another side showing serious ambition under the Chairmanship of Jim Gregory at management at that point of Tommy Docherty, a gaffer that knew both him and his quality well from their time together up NorthHe had taken his international bow for Northern Ireland in 1976, and what a career that would also prove to be, winning 67 caps, appearing in two World Cup Finals, making the All Star XI in 82 for his continuous quality performances in the tournament and being the first player to wear Nike boots on the biggest stage of them all- not bad for a Belfast lad. Post Q.P.R., a spell in the states with Tulsa, playing both indoor and outdoor football for the Roughnecks, saw him return home for his longest club relationship with the Geordie Giants Newcastle United, one that saw 272 outings in the magpie stripes in a seven-year period, where he became a firm Toon favourite. His later career took in Clubs up that end of the country, including Hartlepool and Carlisle United, with spells at Hearts, GIF Sundsval Coleraine sandwiched in between. It was no surprise that a man of his standing in the game would also apply his skill and knowledge to coaching and management, with both Hartlepool and Carlisle having him gaffer them with some success. A fascinating fact also is that, for a spell, he was European advocate for Argentina giants Boca Juniors, scouting and acting as liaison as a result of his highly respected knowledge of the beautiful game. His playing career yielded a total of 639 appearances, and his contribution as a player for all the sides he represented is beyond measure a consummate professional through and through.

The British War Medal awarded to Lieutenant J. H. Cross, Royal Flying Corps, a D.H.2 pilot who served with 32 Squadron, and who was shot down by the German Ace Leutnant Ernst Baron von Stenglin on 11 March 1917. Cross was later involved in a ‘dog fight’ with three Pour le Mérite winners on 21 March 1917, which ultimately led to the death of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia British War Medal 1914-20 (2. Lieut. J. H. Cross. R.F.C.) very fine £100-£140 --- John Hassall Cross was born in Anfield, Liverpool, in November 1888. Prior to the Great War, Cross was employed as an Apprentice Naval Architect with Cammell Laird and also served as a Leading Seaman with the Mersey Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, from 1911 to 1914. He joined the 9th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in September 1914, and served in France with the Machine Gun Platoon from July 1915. Suffering from illness Cross returned to the UK in February 1916, and was posted to the 9th Officer Cadet Battalion in Scotland. Cross volunteered for service with the Royal Flying Corps in July 1916, and carried out his initial training as pilot. He was posted for operational flying with 32 Squadron (D.H.2’s) based at Léalvillers, France, in January 1917. On 11 March 1917, Cross took off with a patrol of six aircraft. Five of the six aircraft became casualties of pilots from Jastas 1, 5 and 12, when they were attacked by nine German Albatros. On the flight from the ambush, Cross was attacked by Leutnant Ernst Baron von Stenglin (a 6 ‘Victory’ Ace) from Jasta 1, and he crashed near Le Sars, where Stenglin claimed he had shot down a Vickers. The Combat Report for Cross in this action adds the following: ‘Pilot was attacked by hostile machine who dived at him from the side, he immediately turned towards them and fired upon one whereupon he turned in his previous direction, pilot was thus enabled to fire about 40 rounds at him at about 50 yards range, when he suddenly nose dived apparently out of control.’ Ten days later, on 21 March 1917, Cross was involved in the death of Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia. A six-aircraft flight took off at 1515hrs on a Line Patrol - consisting of Captain Curphey, Lieutenant Pickthorn, Second Lieutenant’s Eccles, Gompartz, Howe and Cross. During the patrol Lieutenant Picthorn shot down Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia, who later died from his wounds. The Prince had been part of a five-aircraft patrol, which comprised of three Pour Le Mérite winners including Werner Voss. On 22 April, Cross brought down an enemy aircraft but it was not confirmed. On 27 May 1917, doctors diagnosed Cross with flying fatigue. He had flown that morning and felt unwell. He had, by this stage, flown operationally for 150 hours. The doctor recommended complete rest and Cross was sent on Home Establishment four days later. The several months of daily operational flying were replaced by being a Ferry Pilot at Hendon. Cross’s last recorded flight was on 6 December 1917, by which time he had amassed some 400 flying hours. Cross was no longer considered fit for flying, and as a consequence transferred to be employed by the Ministry of Shipbuilding, under the auspices of the Admiralty. After the War he was employed by the Furness Shipbuilding Company - first being a Naval Architect, and then progressing to become Managing Director of the company. Cross was awarded a Royal Humane Society’s Certificate for saving a person from drowning in Brighton in 1936. He continued in his capacity at the Furness Shipbuilding Company during the Second World War, and also served as a Major in command of the Furness Works Company, 19th Battalion, Stockton-on-Tees, Home Guard. Cross retired in 1958, having been employed by the company since 1918. In later life he resided in Brighton, where he died in 1971. Sold with memory stick, containing extensive copied research and including photographic images of recipient in later life.
