Jacques Sicard (French/American, 1865-1923) for Weller Pottery, Zanesville, Ohio, USA. Iridescent glazed earthenware vase, ca. 1902-1907. Possibly depicting leaves or foliage.Jacques Sicard was renowned for his experimentation with metallic luster glazes at Weller - a technique he gleaned while studying under the famed French ceramist Pierre Clement Massier. His exquisite luster ceramics became a line known as "Sicardo," which garnered great acclaim from craftsmen and consumers alike. Sicard refused to divulge his complex artistic process to any individual other than his assistant Henri Gellie, perhaps contributing to the intrigue. However, despite commercial success, producing such a line came with great costs. Due to the volatile nature of luster ware during the firing process, merely a third of luster ware ceramics emerged from Weller's kilns in "marketable state."Reference:Sharon & Bob Huxford, "The Collectors Encyclopedia of Weller Pottery," (Collector Books, 1987), pages 11-12 & 88, plate 89.Height: 6 3/4 in x diameter 3 3/4 in.Condition: There are no major chips, cracks, losses, or repairs.
