Supplied new when built in 1884 to Carlisle City Corporation Viaduct Gasworks and named Merry City, rebuilt 1911 and scrapped 1922, when works closed. Oval cast brass face lightly cleaned, measures 11in x 6.25in. The other plate from this locomotive is in the National collection.

Great War 1914-15 Star Medal Trio to a Private in the 14th Battalion Durham Light Infantry Who Died of Wounds Received in the Attack on Dynamite Magazine in April 1917, 1914-15 star, British War and Victory medal, “14526 PTE. R. WARDLE DURH. L.I.” Ralph Wardle was a 19 year old Miner from Greenwood Gate, Bishop Auckland, Co. Durham when he attested for the Durham Light Infantry in September 1914. Arriving in France on 11th September 1915 he served as a Bugler in C Company and his record shows he was wounded 3 times in 1916 (19/2, 27/4 and 18/9). He received multiple shrapnel wounds on 22nd April 1917 during the Battalions attack on Dynamite Magazine in the Lens/Loos sector of the line. The initial attack was successful but during the day heavy casualties were taken from sniping, bombardments and multiple counter attacks until at 4.45pm the 25 remaining men retreated to Nero trench. At some time during the day Ralph was transferred to 33 C.C.S. where he died from his wounds 2 days later. During the period 20-23rd April the battalion’s casualties were 2 Officers and 24 Other Ranks killed, 10 Officers and 173 Other Ranks wounded and 24 missing. It is sobering to note that the page of the roll for the 1914-15 star on which Ralph Wardle’s name appears has 12 other names listed all of whom are also shown as dead. Ralph Wardle is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery in the Pas de Calais, France

A Milton ShieldBy Elkington & Co., Signed Morel Ladeuil Fecit 1866Of copper electrotype coated with oxidised silver, of slightly convex oval form with roped border, the central circular panel depicting Adam and Eve addressed by the archangel Raphael, framed on either side with ovoidal panels depicting subjects from Milton's 'Paradise Lost', sixth book, the hosts of Heaven attacking the rebels who are driven out and fall to perdition, St. Michael waving his flaming sword over the dragon who appears in human form, Sin and Death appearing either side at the base, the border with Zodiac signs symbolising the rolling year and flight of Time, the upper part of the shield depicting angels and seraphs soaring high above the strife below flanking the emblem of all Light and Life and encircled by winged cherub's heads, the interior with applied oval plaque of the Victoria & Albert Department of Sciences & Art 85.5 cm. highFootnotes:The original of this shield was manufactured for the 1867 Paris Exhibition for which Messrs. Nameplate BEXHILL. Ex Standard Gauge 0-6-0ST built by Manning Wardle as works No.1365 in 1898. It originally worked for contractors H.M.Nowell and S.Pearson and Co. Ltd before going to the Ministry of Munitions at Darlington. In 1919 it was acquired by J.F.Wake, Dealers Darlington and was sold on to James Smith who owned an Ironworks at Hamworthy in Dorset. In about 1937 it moved to the British Sugar Corporation Factory at Sproughton just outside Ipswich and was scrapped there in 1952.

A FREDERICK RHEAD FOR WARDLE POTTERY ARTS AND CRAFTS HADCOTE VASE retailed by Liberty & Co, the blue ground with slip decorated flowers on tubelined stems, 14.5cm high, impressed marks to base, a Carlton Ware Handcraft Delphinium pattern circular pot and cover with wicker handle, 10cm high, a Crown Devon Cretian vase with tube lined decoration and a Plant Tuscan Faience handled vase decorated with grapes and pomegranates, 7cm high (4) Condition Report: All items have crazing. The Wardle vase is missing glaze on the top rim and has small frits around the top rim and base rim. Some wear to the slip decoration.
