JEFFREY, Saffron Waldon, the slender trunk with visible tube over ogee moulded panel cistern cover to the rectangular base with level adjustment screw to underside, 98.5cm (38.75ins) high. W.R. Jeffrey is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working in Saffron Walden circa 1850-70 The form current lot conforms to Negetti and Zambra’s Patent farmer’s barometer where the difference in readings between the wet and dry thermometers indicate the level of evaporation occurring from the wet bulb, hence providing an relative indication in the change of atmospheric humidity. ϒ Indicates that this lot may be subject to CITES regulations when exported. FROMME, WIEN, 632 and annotated N, O, S and W to centre within fine engraved outer degree scale, the lower section with horizontal circle with fine silver Vernier scale, locking and fine adjustment screws over triform ball and socket levelling joint and tapered tripod socket, in original hardwood box applied with trade label inscribed GEBRUDER FROMM, MATHEMATISCH-MECHANISCHES INSTITUT, WIEN, HAINBURGERSTRASSE N’R 21…, to inside of lid, the box 31cm (12.25 ins) deep. The Viennese firm of Gebruder Fromme was formed by brothers Adolf and Karl Fromme when they succeeded Joseph Perfler (established in 1835) in 1884. Their workshop was located at Hainburgerstrasse 21 until 1903 and the business continued in various guises until around 1970.

A rare oak cased mercury and glycerine long range barometer Negretti and Zambra, London, circa 1885 The ceramic scale inscribed NEGRETTI & ZAMBRA, LONDON, GLYCERINE & MERCURY, LONG RANGE BAROMETER to upper margin over visible glycerine filled tube and scale calibrated in reverse from 28 to 31 inches amplified over a distance of 25.5 inches divided into hundredths and with weather observations, the lower section with hipped panel applied with a mercury Fahrenheit and Centigrade scale thermometer set within ogee moulded frame with cavetto moulded pediment and canted skirt base, 108cm (42.5ins) high. The firm of Negretti & Zambra are recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as being established in 1850 when a partnership between Enrico Negretti and Joseph Warren Zambra was formed. The firm became one of the most prolific makers of scientific instruments and continued trading well into the 20th century. The current lot was devised in around 1880 by Negretti and Zambra and is essentially constructed as a mercury and glycerine double-tube or contra-barometer but with only the glycerine filled section visible. Inside the case is a sealed mercury syphon tube of larger bore with the second visible glycerine filled (narrower-bore) column formed as an extension to the concealed open end of the mercury syphon. The unequal capacities of the two tubes together with the difference in specific gravity of mercury and glycerine results in a substantial amplification of the scale allowing the level to be read to one-hundredth of an inch without a Vernier.

A brass Kew Pattern marine mercury stick barometer F. Darton and Company Limited, London, circa 1933 The cylindrical silvered scale calibrated in barometric inches divided into twentieths opposing millibar scale with Vernier slide fitted flush within the central tube viewing aperture, the lower margin signed F. DARTON & Co. LTD, LONDON beneath No. 38/48. the upper margin engraved with crown motif over A.M., 4PP/1933, set behind cylindrical glass collar with brass suspension ring to top plate above Vernier adjustment screw, further plate repeat engraved with crown motif etc. and gimballed support to the slender cylindrical trunk applied with mercury tube Fahrenheit and Absolute thermometer, the base with moulded cylindrical iron cistern cover, 94cm (37ins) high; with mahogany plate fitted with brass sleeve bracket for wall mounting. The firm of Francis Darton and Company are recorced in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working at several addresses on St. John Street, London from 1834 and were still trading until the 1990’s. The current lot is made to the pattern of standard marine barometer devised by Patric Adie and John Welsh of the Kew observatory in 1855.

An unusual Continental lacquered brass theodolite Unsigned, mid to late 19th century With single-draw sighting telescope and spirit-level mounted onto the vertical circle with fine silvered perpendicular Vernier scale to circumference incorporating screw rack adjustment and clamp, mounted via an angled bracket, along with a second cross spirit level, onto a vertical pillar over conforming horizontal circle with silvered Vernier scale to circumference, the base with tapered tripod mounting socket post, in original hardwood box with hinged brass carrying handle to lid, 30.5cm (12ins) wide.

A George II/III mahogany mercury stick barometer J. Hogben, Rye, mid 18th century The break-arch silvered brass scale incorporating MOIST/DAMP, HYGROMETER scale with arbitrary calibrations 0-10 in both directions over herringbone bordered signature panel engraved J. Hogben, Rye Fecit and BAROMETER scale calibrated in barometric inches and with summer and winter observations next to a mercury tube Centigrade scale THERMOMETER within herringbone engraved surround, the trunk with visible tube over pagoda-shaped cistern cover enclosing syphon bulb and with cavetto moulded underside, (hygrometer incomplete, Vernier slide lacking), 93cm (36.5ins) high. J. Hogben of Rye does not appear to be recorded in the usual sources however a Thomas Hogben is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World, Volume 2 as working in nearby Smarden, Kent, 1740-92. The form of the current lot appears to be based on Benjamin Martin’s ‘Triple Weather Glass’ developed in London during the middle years of the 18th century.

A German oxidised and lacquered brass theodolite Dennert and Pape, Hamburg, late 19th century The telescope with rack and pinion focus adjustment and fitted with a spirit level to top, mounted via a horizontal pivot with fine screw angle adjustment bar to the one side onto two pieced A-frame uprights over rotating table incorporating central bubble-level to upper surface, the spaotted lacquered brass canted rim with two opposing windows for viewing the horizontal silver Vernier scale each equipped with individual pivoted magnification lens and signed Dennert & Pape, Hamburg =Altona and numbered St., 1505 between, the circumference with fine screw adjustment and knurled scale locking screw, the whole raised on column upright issuing triform radial supports with screw feet, in original oak and pine box with hinged carrying handle to top, The box 46cm, (18ins) high. Dennert and Pape were founded in 1848 and worked from Altona district of Hamburg well into the 20th century.

Smith, North Gate, Royal Exchange, London, the barometer with engraved silvered scale and vernier, the thermometer with mercury tube and engraved silvered scale, both contained in figured mahogany veneered bow fronted case, bowed glazed panels below moulded scroll pediments, with split turned vase pattern cistern covers, both 39ins high Note: A James Smith was recorded working Royal Exchange, London, fl. 1817-1828

The three glass coloured filters original and undamaged. Instrument stiff in operation from long having been displayed as a wall piece, not cleaned or restored, the wooden box probably original but repaired and black painted at later date, the interior retaining two 19th c fragmentary printed trade labels

Steward, 459 West Strand London', a mercury thermometer to the left and sliding vernier scale to the right, over a flat trunk with mercury tube and turned cistern cover to the base, 36in. (91.5cm.) high *Condition:Ivorine yellowed. One of brass claws holding top of thermometer missing but still secure. Brass fitting securing top of main tube a little dented. Needs cleaning.
