Attributed to Frans Snyders' workshop (Antwerp 1579 - 1657)‘Hunting Scene'Oil on canvas. Relined. 203 x 216 cm.In the past, as the family informs us, the canvas was unfortunately cut to size on the right side in order to fit it in a new location. It is possible that the author's signature was in the lower right-hand corner, but it was lost when the canvas was cut to size. Luis Egidio Meléndez (Naples, 1716 – Madrid, 1780)"Still Life with Pears, Peaches, Grapes, and Melon"Oil on canvas. Relined.44 x 63 cm.This painting is an analogous version to the one kept in the Prado Museum, dated 1771 and of almost identical dimensions, 42 x 62 cm (Catalogue No. P000931).As stated in the Prado Museum biography of the artist: "A Spanish painter, born in Italy to a Spanish family of Asturian origin, he was the son of Francisco Antonio, the miniaturist, and nephew of Miguel Jacinto, the portraitist. He began his education in Madrid alongside his father, then attended classes at the Preparatory Board of the Academy of San Fernando and was a pupil of Louis-Michel van Loo, mastering portrait technique, as demonstrated by his magnificent Self-Portrait (Musée du Louvre). His father’s expulsion from the board, and a probable conflict with Van Loo as a result, led to his dismissal from academic studies. He travelled to Italy and later returned to Spain, where he initially worked as a miniaturist, but his most significant contribution was in still life painting, becoming one of the most distinguished still-life painters in the history of the genre. His career belongs to the second half of the 18th century, a period when the century entered a decisive phase, gradually shaped during the reign of Philip V, both by the presence of foreigners at court and by the travels of Spaniards to Italy, along with projects to reorganise artistic education, an era that would reach its peak with Goya. Meléndez's paintings are generally characterised by great sobriety, executed with a solid sense of drawing and perfectionist realism, down to the smallest details. His ordered and clear compositions, with a taste for contrasts of light and shadow, possess an intensity that recalls the best achievements of Sánchez Cotán or Zurbarán."Reference bibliography:https://dbe.rah.es/biografias/16867/luis-egidio-melendez-de-riberahttps://www.museodelprado.es/aprende/enciclopedia/voz/melendez-luis-egidio/e99ecaad-8a11-4614-932f-960df1f833e4https://www.museobbaa.com/obra/bodegon-de-cocina/

*AURELIO DE FELICE (1915-1996) 'Battaglia di Ragazzi', (Battle of the Boys), 1941, bas-relief panel, bronze, 100cm x 160cm, Note: This work is represented in the permanent collection of the Museo Aurelio De Felice, Terni, Umbria, Italy.De Felice was born in Torre Orsina, a small town on the hills around Terni. Of humble origins, he began his studies in contrast with his family at the Scuola Romana in the 1930s. He earned a degree at the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome, becoming a professor there. De Felice alternated lessons and artistic activity with many personal exhibitions. The most important in that period was the one in the Gallery of Rome, introduced by Renato Guttuso. At the end of the Second World War, De Felice started to travel across Europe. In those years he exhibited in Switzerland, Germany and France, where he created, in Paris, on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the School of Italian Art. There he met Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Jean Cocteau, Kees van Dongen, Ossip Zadkine, Mark Tobey and Constantin Brâncuși. He did not allow himself to be involved in the big debate between realism and formalism in the 1950s, continuing on his own road.In 1961 De Felice created the Institute of Arts in Terni. In those years he continued to exhibit all over Europe (Italy, Germany, Switzerland, France). In 1967 he was in charge of the Italian Institute of Culture in Hamburg and the Center of Italian Studies in Zurich. In 1977 he was invited to the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, for a conference on Orneore Metelli, a "painter-shoemaker" from Terni, and father of the Naïve Italian movement, whose art had become famous thanks to De Felice's work. His last exhibition took place in 1982; after that, disease forced the sculptor to limit his activity. He spent the last years of his life in the quiet of his house on the hills of Torre Orsina, where he died on June 14, 1996.The celebrated Italian artist and politician Renato Guttuso (1911-1987) commented on the impact of the work offered here, in a letter to De Felice, remarking "I remember a work of yours from that time, a relief, which was your contribution to the approach of the two directions of research. The relief represents a battle. But a battle of boys. You had found the only possible poetic key (not heroic) to depict a battle! Even today, after twenty years, thirty years, reviewing your work, following its path, observing the changes, I find the same emotion in looking at your sculptures".

A Monumental Italian Cabinet with StandIn ebony and ebonized wood, featuring an architectural-inspired structure, pietra dura inlays, and gilt bronze mounts. The front of the cabinet presents a symmetrical arrangement with a central niche, flanked by two rows of six drawers richly adorned with pietra dura panels, including various semi-precious stones and different types of marble, such as lapis lazuli, agate, jasper, brocatello rosso, rosso antico, alabaster, cipollino, and porphyry, arranged in geometric patterns. The central niche, also lined with pietra dura panels depicting shell-shaped cartouches, is decorated with architectural elements, including lapis lazuli columns and a portico with a triangular pediment supported by two gilt bronze Atlas figures. The ceiling of the niche is painted in trompe l'oeil, and the base is adorned with parquetry work. The sides of the cabinet, with pietra dura panels, replicate the composition of the central panel, framed by the portico. The top, with a row of five drawers decorated with red porphyry panels, is surmounted by four putti playing musical instruments. The base, with four drawers and a small central drawer, features a carved apron decorated with carved volutes. The original construction of this cabinet dates back to the 17th century, showing evidence of alterations, possibly during the 19th century, with the addition of decorative elements and structural modifications. The stand, of later construction, with four drawers and volute-shaped front legs, maintains decorative consistency with the cabinet, featuring the same type of panels with pietra dura inlays. A small drawer at the base of the cabinet has an interior label reading 'Ant.(?) Burg(...)rgasse.Graz,' with a handwritten note in French stating: "Furniture from the imp(?) Palace of Burg(?)... brought here by Archduchess Maria of Bavaria 1571-1616, with all her luxury objects from Munich." Although uncertain, this reference seems to suggest a connection between the cabinet and Maria Anna of Bavaria (1574-1616), daughter of William V, Duke of Bavaria, and wife of Ferdinand II (1578-1637). The piece also bears two other inscriptions: one in black ink at the bottom of the left drawer of the cabinet base — "Stockholm(...) 18/8 - 1947/ H HALKJAER./ Dansk" and "HÖRN 1955-1965/ CORMÉRY"; and another handwritten in pencil in Swedish, at the bottom of the left drawer of the stand — "The cabinet was bought in the 1940s from Consul General Jean Jahnsson, formerly at the Van Der Nootska Palace, when we moved to Östermalmsgatan 21 Stockholm/ A big move when Stensund and Van der Nootska were left./ Eugène CORMERY/ Strangnäs July 1996." (minor losses and defects)193x204.5x62 cmNote: The pietra dura technique has its origins in the Florentine Renaissance, reaching its peak at the end of the 16th century. This technique is characterized by the meticulous use of semi-precious stones, such as lapis lazuli, jasper, agate, and porphyry, carefully cut and arranged to create intricate decorative patterns. The development of pietra dura as an art form was strongly promoted by the Medici family in Florence, culminating in the foundation of the Galleria dei Lavori in 1588, which became a center of excellence for the refinement and dissemination of this technique. In the context of the cabinet now presented for auction, the presence of pietra dura panels is a testament to the mastery of this technique, highly valued by the European aristocracy of the 17th and 18th centuries. This cabinet shares similarities with a distinct group of pieces produced in Rome in the 17th century. Notably, a particularly significant cabinet was sold by Sotheby's in London on 6 July 2011 for £668,450. Other comparable cabinets are part of renowned collections, such as that of the Duke of Hamilton, the Demidoff Cabinet (sold by Sotheby's in 1992), and an impressive example in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. The central niche of the cabinet, with lapis lazuli columns and shell-shaped cartouches—likely an addition or later alteration—as well as elements like the central arched panel, its pediment, and the design and decoration of the side drawers, remain faithful to the style of the aforementioned cabinets, making it a monumental example of the extraordinary decorative craftsmanship developed in pietra dura furniture.
