Ca. 400 - 300 BC. A fine wheel-thrown pair of lekanides, each with a shallow basin, a pedestal foot, and a decorated lid. The imagery is done via the red-figure technique with two Ladies of Fashion, each adorned with fugitive white pigment creating elegant ornamentation. The ladies are each dressed in beaded saccoi over an upswept coiffure and a beaded necklace. These ancient visages are separated by stylised palmettes. A series of vertical stripes adorn the outer periphery of the rim, meeting the black-painted body below. The large knob atop the lid displays a sunburst design on its depression. Ca. 350 - 300 BC. A red-figure pottery olpe with a bulbous body and a short, splayed foot. The neck is funnel-shaped and has a flanged mouth. The two vertical handles serve the purpose of lifting the vessel when filled with water, while a vertical handle at the back facilitates pouring and holding the vase. Beneath the vertical handles, a large fan-shaped palmette is flanked by stylised plant scrolls on each side. There is a floral motif on the neck. Side A of the olpe is decorated with a scene presenting a seated crowned Nike holding a large wreath in the right hand. Side B of the olpe depicts a Maenad in a long tunic with her hair gathered in a topknot. She also wears a beaded necklace and bracelets on both wrists. A group of metalwork comprising a silver Ottoman pen holder of typical form with an attached inkwell, decorated with embossed and incised motifs, featuring two silver stamps above and below, with hinged lids. Included is a Mamluk Revival brass casket with silver inlay, of coffered shape, with a lid inlaid with silver calligraphy surrounded by six calligraphic panels; three sides adorned with geometric and floral designs, and the front panel inlaid in silver with five fantastical winged animals. Also in the group is a small steel hexagonal box, decorated with applied gold floral designs on each of the six sides, equipped with two rotating handles, hinged on one side and latched on the opposite side. BERNARD DE HOOG (DUTCH 1867 - 1943), COTTAGE INTERIOR oil on canvas, signedframed and under glassimage size 49cm x 39cm, overall size 76cm x 66cmNote: Dutch artist, Bernard De Hoog, produced a rich oeuvre of gentle interior scenes, which celebrated the everyday moments within family - particularly between mothers and their children. Newborns are cradled within their mother's arms while siblings read in rustic kitchens. In many respects, De Hoog’s work is comparable to the great Dutch painter, Jozef Israëls (1924-1911) and ultimately rooted within the traditions of the Dutch masters. During his time studying under the eminent Jan van Essen, he produced numerous copies of old masters while honing histechnique. It’s said that his career began through chance when working in an office for a merchant. Rather than figures in a ledger, the merchant discovered various sketches and drawings and was so impressed that he asked the young De Hoog to paint his wife. This, in turn, led to the artist’s tutelage under a drawing master and later, an academy. When we look back across his body of work, the consistent thread is a celebration of simple family life and the instinctive love between a mother and child. Misty sentimentalism majestically described with an impressionistic touch. In 1939, De Hoog’s work was shown in an exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

PATRICK DOWNIE RSW (SCOTTISH 1854 - 1945), SHIP DISTANT watercolour on paper, signedmounted, framed and under glassimage size 36cm x 53cm, overall size 57cm x 73cm Note: Born in Greenock in 1854, Patrick Downie started his working life as a van man and later a postman, before devoting himself and his life to art, embarking on a period of intense study first in this country and then in Paris. Despite early setbacks in his artistic career, Downie was an early contributor to the principal art exhibitions, including those of the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Watercolour Society. He also showed at exhibitions in Paris, Venice and elsewhere on the continent, being elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colour in 1905 . The first man from his home town to have a painting exhibited in the Royal Academy, Downie went on to win a gold medal at the Paris Salon in 1901. He exhibited 16 works at the Royal Academy, 54 at the Royal Scottish Academy, 126 at the Royal Scottish Society of Artists in Water Colour, 133 at the Glasgow Institute and elsewhere. He died in 1945 aged 91 years.
