2nd century A.D.. With everted rim and decorative geometric band to the shoulder. See Pollard, R. J., The Roman Pottery of Kent, 1988. 1.98 kg, 28 cm wide (11 in.). Found Upchurch Marshes, Kent, UK, in the 1980s.Ex Winter Collection, Kent, UK.The Roman pottery kilns on what are now the tidal marshes at Upchurch, Kent, are justly famed as a thriving pottery production area with many kiln and related sites. The London clay in this area is of fine quality and was thus suitable for pottery making. With the rise in the sea level, the area is now mostly inundated and, as tidal forces erode the silts, pottery (often 'seconds'), is sometimes exposed. The soft muds and general inaccessibility of the area make collection difficult. [No Reserve]

Upchurch Pottery - A Circa 1900 studio pottery bowl of shouldered squat ovoid form with three applied loop handles, all in a pale blue glaze, signed to the base, diameter 17cm, together with another example in mottled green and tan glaze. (2)

A ROMAN GREYWARE POTTERY URN CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D. With encircling bands around the mid-body and a band of undulating wave pattern, base of urn inscribed in ink: 'Roman cinerary urn Upchurch (?) ware, River Medway 1940', now converted to a lamp with removable two-light fitting, with fabric shade 25cm high, 47cm high to top of existing shade Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. The body with varying areas/dates of restorations visible under strong natural light and UV. Chip to top rim, edge wear and scuffs. A collection of art pottery to include a Salkian Art Pottery dish with sgraffito decoration 19 cm in diameter, a pair of Iznik style vases 17 cm high, a studio pottery type lamp base with indistinct mark to base 31 cm high etc CONDITION REPORTS All basically appear sound with areas of slight surface wear and tear conducive with age and use. The Upchurch vase has some signs of glazing faults to the shoulders - see images. The small green and yellow relief vase has several areas of chipping. Otherwise pieces appear sound.
