A mumei katana, possibly manufactured in a Japanese Occupied theatre, in a shirasaya mounting with tsuba, habaki and single seppa; the blade configuration with weak honzukuri/fukura-tsuku and single mekugi ana on the kata-yamagata nakago; nagasa about 57.3cm [about 1Shaku/8 Sun/9.0951812 Bu]Provenance: The Property of a Lady. Inherited from her Father who is thought to have served in the Dutch East Indies at the conclusion of the Second World War.The blade, shirasaya style koshirae, tsuba and bruised habaki here are perhaps noteworthy as examples of the type of blades and fittings that appeared towards the conclusion of The Pacific War in 1945. They are a subject that merits some further appraisal and geographical analysis, bearing in mind also that the scarcity of raw materials and skilled sword makers by 1944 greatly influenced what could be produced, and where.Richard Fuller and Ron Gregory ['Military Swords of Japan, 1868-1945'/pages 48 and 50], publishing in 1986, gave attention to a variety of blades that were defined by the stringent demands on steel and technical production. Such blades were presumably intended to fulfil both domestic and foreign demand, competing with the budgets and labour forces of other priorities such as the First Special Attack Unit [commanded by Tadashi Nakajima], attempting to protect Japan's oil supplies from the US Third Fleet in Leyte Gulf [see page 485 of 'The World at War/The Landmark oral History' edited by Richard Holmes].Fuller and Gregory make the significant point also that some of these 1944-1945 blades were produced in Japanese occupied theatres. The authors give a specific example where a scrap-metal, locally manufactured, blade was seen by an English POW being tested on a banana tree in the Celebes at Makassar on the Makassar Strait.Clearly without a very exact provenance, it is an inexact science to accurately attribute a particular blade to a particular location, although collection by the Vendor's Father somewhere in the Dutch East Indies, offers a strong indication of this blade's origin.Note: You must be over 18 to purchase this item. Collection must be made in person or by arrangement with a delivery company that provides an age verification service. We do not provide a shipping service for bladed items.
