KAMIL LHOTAK (Czech / Bohemian 1912 - 1990) - Tricycle | 1957 | technique: etching on paper | 278 x 325 mm | signature: bottom right | note: Author's print. In the inventory of the works of Libor Steffek G 273 | framed under glass | Lot description | This graphic by Kamil Lhotak from 1957 presents a scene with a characteristic motif of the artist's work - fascination with technology and the world of modern transport. Lhotak, as a prominent representative of post-war Czech fine art, often depicted machines, motorcycles, airplanes and other symbols of progress that connect the industrial and romantic worlds. The composition of this work impresses with its simplicity and calm atmosphere, which is supported by a subtle figurative element in the background. The "Tricycle" graphic is a nostalgic look at a time when technology was still seen as fascinating and inspiring. | condition report*In case of missing photos, please feel free to contact us.

Lot 105

Registration No: Unregistered Frame No: AB1T 6725 MOT: ExemptSubject to a complete build over many years by a respected Vespa collectorOffered in running conditionAn extremely rare early Ape complete with Vespa 98 style forkLess than a handful of Calessino evocations are known to be in the UK making this a very rare vehicle indeedIntroduced two years after the Vespa scooter, Piaggio’s Ape (Italian for “Bee”) was created primarily to carry goods. The Ape could be configured to meet a wide range of commercial needs thanks to its extremely flexible tricycle configuration, allowing it to serve as a miniature truck or van. Piaggio had repurposed proven Vespa mechanics to create what would become an immensely successful workhorse and are considered equally as iconic. The Ape is still produced today. The Ape ‘Giardinetta’ was launched in spring 1948 as a people transporter with a rear bench seat that allowed the transport of two passengers. The vehicle was offered with a retractable wide hood that in case of rain or scorching sun would offer shelter. The factory painted the Giardinettas in the same metallic green colour used for Vespa scooters. The elegant coach-built bodies were made by specialised suppliers located in the Lombardy region of northern Italy and final assembly was done in the Piaggio plant in Pontedera. The Italian versions were closed on the sides with a little door beside the driver for access. In 1952 The Giardinetta was renamed the ‘Calessino’ which was upgraded to 150cc for more power. The Calessino became even more famous in 1957 thanks to its appearance in the movie ‘Holiday in Ischia’. This 1953 Calessino is based on an Ape chassis and still retains the Vespa 98 style fork assembly. There are very few survivors of these given the hard work that most of them had to do and the fact that the fabric hoods and wooden bodies are susceptible to the ravages of time. The rear coachwork was sourced from Italy to the highest and correct specification as were the wheel arches. We are informed it runs and stops fine and only requires finishing to the wiring for the lights. Only for sale due to the illness of the current owner. There are no documents but given the clear chassis number and assistance available from the Veteran Vespa Club registering this for the road should be a formality. Less than a handful of Calessino evocations are known to be in the UK making this a very rare vehicle indeed. The Ivan Kessell Collection1914 Swift 3½hp RoadsterRegistration no. AF 1423Frame no. 3791014 79LEngine no. 7814Possibly the sole survivor of its typePresent ownership since 1979An older restorationRequires recommissioningThe Swift marque's origins date back to the turbulent formative years of the British cycle and motorcycle industries when it emerged, together with Ariel, as part of the Dunlop group of companies. The older of the two, Ariel may trace its roots back to 1893 when John Griffiths, previously engaged in the pneumatic tyre business, set up a new company to obtain the distribution rights to a wide range of cycle makes. This was The John Griffiths Cycle Corporation Ltd, which, among other activities, marketed cycles under the Dunlop and Ariel brand names, the latter having been registered by the short-lived Guest & Barrow company that same year. When the original Dunlop Pneumatic Tyre Company bought back The Dunlop Cycle Company from Griffiths in 1897, it was decided that a new name for their reacquired cycle business would be needed, 'Ariel' being chosen. Like the Dunlop branded cycles, the Ariels were manufactured in Birmingham by the Cycle Components Manufacturing Co Ltd. Also in 1897, Dunlop had acquired an interest in The Coventry Machinists Co Ltd, which was reorganised as The Swift Cycle Co Ltd at premises in Cheylesmore, Coventry. Thus it was that both Ariel and Swift became owned by Dunlop, and the two companies would go on to be closely associated. Both firms commenced motor manufacture with a tricycle, and both sourced the engines from De Dion Bouton.Ariel's first powered two-wheeler was exhibited at the National Show in November 1901. The newcomer was powered by a Minerva engine built under license by Cycle Components Manufacturing, which was supplying both Ariel and Swift. A few years later Ariel took control of Components Ltd's motorcycle business. Swift's first motorcycle arrived in 1904 and after 1910 there was a 3½hp (490cc) model in the range. Swift, like Ariel, also offered models powered by the famous White & Poppe 'T-head' sidevalve engine. In the meantime, Swift had become increasingly active as a car manufacturer, and all motorcycle production had stopped by 1915.The Swift offered here features a conventional sidevalve engine and a three-speed gearbox, the latter newly introduced for 1914, together with chain-cum-belt transmission. An older restoration, this ultra-rare Coventry-built motorcycle - possibly the sole survivor of its type - has been on long-term museum display and will require recommissioning, or possibly more extensive restoration, before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed. Accompanying paperwork includes old/current V5C documents and an old-style continuation logbook (issued 1958) listing Ivan Kessell as owner from March 1979. This logbook also states that the date of first registration was 2nd April 1915.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.REQUEST A TRANSPORT QUOTEPlease click the link to request a transport quote from our recommended transport company, Moving Motorcycles. To request a UK or European shipping quote - Moving MotorcyclesTo request an International shipping quote - ShippioThis Lot will be auctioned on Sunday 13 October starting at 11am GMT.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 84

A Mooncool adults low step through tricycle, with backrest saddle.

Lot 25

Registration No: YOR 40 Chassis No: 70512 MOT: ExemptOn offer from the estate of the late David NevePurchased from H&H by the later owner fr, having been subject to a previous full restorationA rewarding recommissioning projectIntroduced in 1953 as the 'fend', after its co-designer Fritz Fend, the KR175 Kabinenroller (scooter with cabin) was soon marketed under the more famous Messerschmitt name. The narrow body and corresponding low frontal area was achieved with tandem seating and handlebar controls which also allowed the body to taper like an aircraft fuselage. Powered by a two-stroke 148cc Fichtel & Sachs engine that produced a modest 9bhp, the fuel consumption was reported to be 87mpg with a top speed of 55mph. In 1955, an improved KR200 was introduced with a larger 191cc engine, revised bodywork, an improved turning circle and floor-mounted accelerator and clutch. The tandem seating allowed centralised weight distribution irrespective of occupants, avoiding the flawed logic of the Isetta's lop-sided engine arrangement, and providing the little tricycle with handling characteristics that outclassed its contemporaries. Four forward and four reverse gears made for rapid progress in either direction with a top speed of 62mph. Available in the UK from 1955 onwards, production ceased in 1964 after some 30,000 KR200s had been built.According to the Dating Certificate on file, chassis 70512 was originally supplied by Cabin Scooters (Assemblies) Ltd on the 19th March 1959. It is understood that the car was well known in club circles, however, it was then laid up for approximately forty years before being acquired by the previous owner and treated to a comprehensive restoration using only original and club-supplied parts, during which the engine and transmission were overhauled by a club specialist. Re-registered after restoration in 2018 and used sparingly by the previous owner for only one year after, the tandem-seater was then sold by H&H at our March 2019 Duxford sale. The late owner and father of the vendor, Mr David Neve, was the gentleman who would acquire the Messerschmitt from the auction, and it would become the jewel of his collection. Mr Neve’s son recalls that his father was exceptionally proud of his microcars and would often be seen around Norfolk at different car shows. Mr Neve’s declining health meant that his collection had not been used for some years, so the KR200 will require some level of mechanical attention. ‘YOR 40’ is to be supplied with a modest history file consisting of the V5C and some Dating Certificate material from the club. H&H is honoured to have been entrusted to offer the car collection all at No Reserve at our Duxford Imperial War Museum sale.
