An Elema eharo maskPapuan Gulf, Papua New Guineafibre and tapa with red, white and black pigment, of helmet type with a long eliptical face with an open mouth baring teeth, with ring eyes and outline zig-zag motifs including to the double fin coiffure, with a long curved rod to the top,108cm high.

A collection of autograph letters signed and other ephemera, including a 1p. a.l.s. by Agustin De Itubide dated 1824, a 1p a.l.s. by William Mariner, with ‘Tapa cloth’ samples and dated 1828, a 3pp a.l.s. by the French King as the Duc D’Orleans concerning a gifted painting, and a clipped signature of King George III.
A mid-20th century Polynesian tapa cloth, the vendor informs us that this was a backdrop at the funeral of Queen Salote of Tonga in 1965 and was given to the vendors aunt who was nursing in Tonga at the time and it has stayed within the family by descent, it was also featured in BBC Antiques Roadshow where it was valued by Ronnie Archie-Morgan, 140 x 275cm; together with one other smaller example, 61 x 78cm (2)

An Oceanic / Polynesian Tapa bark cloth, probably Tongan - painted with earth pigments with geometric patterns, believed to be first half 20th century, approx. 170 x 118 cm, has been folded, tear to one end, smaller tears and small holes around the margins, old glue residue around the edges to the reverse.

A Kuba (Congo) carved wood figural cup, 19th/20th century, the upper vessel carved with three registers of dentil, over a kneeling spirit figure with open mouthed fierce expression 21cm high; together with a Papua New Guinea barkcloth "tapa" long mat painted with repeating panels of hatched X motifs and toothed patterns, with applied label inscribed "Mat made out of tree bark New Guinea" 221cm x 47cm (max); and another, tubular, painted with tree-like and other repeat motifs, with adhered old letter " A New Guinea dress made of the beaten bark of a tree stripped entire off the trunk without being cut at all. A large Tongan tapa mat, early 20th century; rectangular, with stylised foliate and crown motifs in russet reserves; 177 x 172cmProvenance: By family repute, the tapa was made for the coronation of Queen Salote Tupou III of Tonga, (explaining the presence of the crown motifs in its design). It was presented to a Rev. L. Greensides who had been present at the occasion, as Superintendant of the Melanesian Mission and who was later Vicar of Abbotskerswell, Devonshire. The tapa was left with the property when the current vendors bought the Old Vicarage in that village.
