Paddy Brennan 18k gold Waltham full hunter pocket watch, with enamel dial, subsidiary seconds and Roman numerals, the interior of the case inscribed Presented To P. J. Brennan By The SHAMROCK LACROSSE CLUB, Champions 1907, the outer case inscribed with initials At the turn of the century, Paddy Brennan was already established as one of the top amateur lacrosse players with the Shamrock Lacrosse Club of Montreal, Quebec. By 1904 he was being offered opportunities to turn professional, but refused them all. He was therefore able to participate in the trials for what would become Canada's first truly national amateur lacrosse delegation and was selected not only to travel with them to the 1908 Summer Olympics, but to act as a captain. His amateur status also meant, however, that he had to work as a businessman outside of lacrosse, and he his presence on the team was at times sporadic. Work pressures eventually led him to announce his retirement in May of 1909. In 1912, however, he returned to the Shamrocks when the National Lacrosse Union voted to reinstate the role of the field captain, and the Shamrocks' president refused to take on the role himself. He even played in one more game with the team in July 1915 and scored a goal. Shortly thereafter he left the sport for over a decade, but by the late 1920s he had renewed his interest and began to work to raise its popularity. Paddy Brennan has been attributed as the inventor of indoor box lacrosse, a modern version of the game introduced in Canada during the 1920s and 30s. Brennan was said to get annoyed by the constant slowing of play from balls going out of bounds in the field game, and began experimenting with indoor games at the Mount Royal Arena, Montreal, during the early 1920s. He also served as the coach of Montreal's St. Willbrord lacrosse team before taking up that role with the professional Montreal Maroons in the early 1930s. In addition, he held the position of the Maroons' manager and accepted the role of honorary coach with the Verdun Athletic Club's amateur lacrosse squad. He remained active in promoting the sport at all levels until the 1950s, when he began to experience heart troubles, and he died in May of 1961. Patrick "Paddy" Brennan was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1966. We had the pleasure of selling Paddy's 1908 Olympic gold medal in these rooms at our Sporting Memorabilia Auction 10-11th November 2014, Lot 576 Provenance: By family descent

The Yacht America, By Winfield M. Thompson, William P. Stephens, William U. Swan, Together With Material From Contemporary Record, with A Foreword By John E. Spears, Illustrated, Boston, Charles E. Lauriat Co. 1925, a first edition (the dates on the copyright page and title page match - they both say 1925 - and there are no other printings), with a piece of the canvas carried by the America in the first race for The America’s Cup that took place in New York harbor in August 8, 1870 on a paper signed by William U. Swan, the last civilian commander of the America. The gilt on the spine says “The Yacht America, Thompson, Stephens, Swan “ and depicts the America’s Cup in bright gilt, with blue cloth covers, endpapers that show a map of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, a beautiful frontispiece engraving of The America from the original sketch taken on the spot by Oswald W. Brierly in 1851 and the lettered tissue-guard to protect the frontispiece, then the title page and the copyright page, which says the book was printed at the Colonial Press in Boston. It is 310 pages long, with an eight-page foreword by John Spears, the Contents and six pages of Illustrations - it is fulled with photos and engravings - and a sixteen-page Appendix at the rear that includes what the menu was at the first Cup race in 1851, a complete list of all the Cup races, the names of the cutters and schooners the America beat in 1851, and all the challengers she faced up to 1920, and a nine-page index on top of that. There’s also a very clean fold-out chart of the hull from three different viewpoints at the rear, and they faithfully represent the original lines of the America when it was designed by George Steers in 1851. Without exaggerating, America is the world’s most famous racing yacht, and one of the most beautiful yachts in the world. The reason is simple: the original America put yachting on the map. It is why the most famous trophy in sailing is called The America’s Cup. In 1851, this 139-foot yacht won the ‘Royal Yacht Squadrons’ 100 Guinea Cup given to the winner of a race around the Isle of Wight. It is said that the margin was so great while she was watching America sail past the royal yacht, Queen Victoria famously asked “Who came second?” “Your majesty… there is no second” was the reply. The winners, who were members of the New York Yacht Club, donated the trophy to the Club, to be held as a “challenge” trophy. Thus was born the America’s Cup, named after the boat, not the country. Owned by Commodore John C. Stevens and five other members of the New York Yacht Club, the America was built in New York following the revolutionary design of George Steers and launched in May 1851. A succession of British syndicates attempted to win back the cup, but the New York Yacht Club remained unbeaten for 25 challenges over 113 years, the longest winning streak in the history of sport. Matches were held in the vicinity of New York City from 1870 to 1920, and from 1930 to 1983, the races were sailed off Newport, Rhode Island for the rest of the New York Yacht Club’s reign. The consignor’s wife’s grandmother was related to William Swan, the captain and commander of the America, and why he had the book in his collection, and it is in impeccable condition. The book is 8vo. and measures 8 x 5 5/8 in. wide, the gilt on the spine is bright, and a great addition to anyone who collects maritime and racing memorabilia.

Given to double 500cc World Champion Barry Sheene MBE by Suzuki GB in recognition of his time as a Works rider and used by him for five years.Ask any group of non-motor sport enthusiasts to name a famous motor cycle racer and there will be a few Valentino Rossis, a Mike Hailwood or two and undoubtedly the name Barry Sheene would be mentioned, despite the fact that his last motorcycle race was in 1984. His larger-than-life character, spectacular crashes and regular TV appearances for Brut aftershave alongside 'Splash it all over' Henry Cooper made him a household name.A dream for advertising executives and tabloid journalists alike, Barry Sheene (1950-2003) won more international 500cc and 750cc races between 1975 and 1982 than any rival. Although, Kreidler, Derbi and Yamaha also featured on his CV, it was whilst at Suzuki that he became a legend. Among the first LJ80Rs to arrive in the UK, HGO 747T was supplied by Suzuki GB to double world champion Barry Sheene for promotional duties and use as a pit vehicle. Dating from 1979 and originally painted Pastel Blue with black signwriting (including Sheene's famous number `7' decals) and a red stripe, the diminutive 800cc-engined four-wheel drive was later registered to the flamboyant rider's home address and remained with him until 1987 when he migrated to Australia. The Jeep's next owner was Ian Catford - Suzuki GB's contemporary marketing director - who lost little time in reinstating its full `Barry Sheene' livery. Bought by a Mr Royle thereafter, the LJ80R was pressed into everyday use before being sold to Suzuki main dealers, CMW Automobiles of Cuckfield, Sussex during the early 1990s. A showroom exhibit when not appearing at outside events or being loaned to Suzuki GB, HGO 747T was retained by CMW Automobiles' proprietor Richard Ferris upon his retirement in 2007, kept garaged and only used occasionally. In 2013, HGO was offered at auction and purchased by our vendor to join his impressive collection of road and race cars where it has remained ever since. The indicated mileage is 26,170, supported by old MOTs and invoices, and the car appears in very good overall condition and certainly starts and drives like a low-mileage Japanese car. The Suzuki is not only a fantastic piece of motorsport memorabilia but also an interesting vehicle in its own right as a rare survivor of the LJ80 range of lightweights 'Jeeps' which caused quite a stir when they arrived in the UK in the late 70s. It features a soft top hood and removable doors and, although only 800cc, this little four-wheel drive LJ has a real 'go anywhere' look. It's supplied with an owners manual, service manual, a number of older MOTs and maintenance invoices, a couple of older V5s and DVLA Licence Applications in Barry Sheene's name and address in Horley, a Suzuki GB Bulletin, the auction catalogue from 2013 and period photographs taken at Effingham Park Hotel during one of Suzuki GB's annual conferences. This is a lovely little thing and a true connection with one of motorcycle racing's truly great characters. Sensibly guided at a tiny percentage of the values achieved by Barry's race bikes, the LJ would be at home in a corner of any motor sport enthusiast's collection.SpecificationMake: SUZUKIModel: LJ80RYear: 1979Chassis Number: 500103Registration Number: HGO 747TTransmission: ManualEngine Number: 115386Drive Side: Right-hand DriveOdometer Reading: 26170 MilesMake: RHDInterior Colour: Black VinylClick here for more details and images

Offered from The Forshaw Speedway Collection c.1948 Langton-JAP 500cc Mk IV Speedway Racing MotorcycleFrame no. B3•Product of the legendry Eric Langton•1 of approximately 12 built•Found by Richard Forshaw in South Africa•Possibly ex-Fred van ZycEric Langton with his brother Oliver were involved with motorcycles from an early age, with Eric's first ride of a motorcycle at the age of 12 in 1919. He was enthusiastic about all branches of the sport from racing to trials, winning the Scott Trial over the Yorkshire moors in 1928 - a race against time with at least 15 sections. The previous year he had ridden to 12th place on his Sunbeam in the Senior TT in the Isle of Man. In 1928 Eric had his first sight of dirt track racing at the White City Stadium in Manchester. Both he and Oliver joined a practice day at nearby Belle Vue and were told that anyone who could complete four laps in 1.1/4 seconds would be invited to ride in the following Saturday's event. They both qualified and Eric with his 350cc Sunbeam decided to give it a go. He ended up riding speedway for twenty years. In those days Eric was an apprentice at Greenwood and Baltby - an engineering firm with outlets as diverse as turbines and general machines - working for £1.50 a week when riding successfully for five nights a week could result in £20. Eric's success over the years included Test Matches with the legendary Jack Parker and qualifying for the World Finals in 1935 and 1937-1939. Probably the highlight of his career was in 1932 winning the Star Championship, fore runner of the World Final, as well as the British Individual Championship in the same year. During the war with his skilled engineering background Eric worked at the Scott factory making petrol pumps for Rolls Royce Merlin engines. Eric retired from speedway in 1947 when he was forty moving to Australia in 1957 where, at the age of 89 in 1996, he was busy with his five vintage and veteran cars and eleven motorcycles. On his retirement from the track in 1947 he started a business making speedway frames. The first, the MK I, was based on a pre-war Excelsior pattern, a brazed lugged frame which proved popular with possibly as many a 50 being made. Then along came the Maxi. Max Grosskreutz returned after the war without any machines but what he wanted was a lightweight all welded luggless frame and he turned to Eric Langton to make it for him. This proved such a success that Eric reckons he made at least a hundred of them. It was this frame that became known as the Maxi.A Langton Mk III frame - another all welded luggless construction – was produced but not so many were made. Then there was the Mk IV. This is what Richard Forshaw found in South Africa. He wrote to Eric Langton in Australia in 1993 and Eric replied providing detailed information. Well into his 80s his memory was still formidable. The Mk IV was made 1948-1950 and only about twelve of them were constructed. The frame number indicating that it was one of the first. An identifying feature is the gusset welded behind the steering head. This was only on the very first frames because it was soon discovered that cracks could appear in the down tube where the gusset terminated. Without the gusset in all the later frames there were no more problems. Another early feature is the spring in the front fork. Once again this was used in only the first Mk IV frames, all later forks having springs within each fork leg. The countershaft is also an early pattern, later versions pivoted at the bottom with the top bolt adjustable in a slot. An interesting and unusual feature, the steering damper knob inscribed 'Eric Langton'. Eric never exported any frames but considered it possible that Ron Stringer, an Odsal, Bradford speedway rider could have taken one of the team bikes with him when he emigrated to Cape Town around 1955/6. Eric had supplied the Odsal team with Maxi frames. Another note in the accompanying file written by Doug Brodie suggests that this Langton was ex-Fred van Zyc but gives no further evidence. In their correspondence Eric mentions that he needed a head gasket for his 1923 Rolls Royce 20hp. Richard had to tell him that this is going to cost £125. Initially shocked by the cost, a little horse trading ensues with Eric receiving his gasket and Richard gaining wonderful Langton memorabilia, a test match jersey, finally identified as Eric's Team Captain jersey from the 1937 English Overseas 3rd Test held at New Cross. There is no record of the condition of this Mk IV Langton as acquired or of any restoration. Accompanied by the correspondence and copied relevant extracts from the press, the mechanical condition is not known and therefore we recommend re-commissioning and/or restoration to a greater or lesser extent.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
