This little 1,584cc Fulvia HF (now registered as a Rallye HF) would make a perfect first time entry into the world of historic rallies. Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in 1963, Lancia’s little Fulvia was as intriguing and ambitious as it was innovative, swapping rear-wheel drive for a more advanced front-wheel drive, embracing Lancia's DOHC V4 engine. Starting with a modest 57bhp but evolving to a sturdy 130bhp, its variants, especially the Coupés, gained fame for their rallying prowess. An undeniably underappreciated icon in the history books of Italian automotive successes. The Fulvia marked Lancia’s glorious and victorious return to motorsport, carving a niche in the rallying scene, paving the way for an era of dominance in the World Rally Championship far from the spotlight hogged by its successors – the Stratos, O37 and Delta Integrale. It is often forgotten that it was the Fulvia that earned the distinction of winning Lancia's first World Rally title in 1972.This particular Fulvia was rebuilt as a rally car in 2017 having started its life as a standard 1.3 (1,300cc). It's now powered by a 1,600cc engine fitted with twin-Weber 45 carbs, work-spec cams, Arrow conrods, a balanced crank, Mangoletsi intake manifold and carburettor linkage and a 'Group 4' manifold/free-flow exhaust, recently set up and dyno-tested by Stanton Motorsports. It's a Fulvia HF body (steel construction with aluminium bonnet, boot, and doors) registered as a Rallye HF. The interior is as basic as one would expect, stripped back to save weight and fitted with a roll cage, two Recaro bucket seats, racing harnesses and fire extinguishers.Upon its conversion to rally-spec, the car was maintained by its owner's in-house mechanic, who carried out all repairs, modifications, servicing and pre-event spanner checks. Recent work included stripping the engine and gearbox for check-overs and refurbing with fresh gaskets.Cosmetically, as is to be expected with a competition car, there are some dents and imperfections, however there are no major sightings of rust except for some light surface tarnishing where the paint has chipped.Lancia-based rally cars have traditionally been expensive, however this little Fulvia seems like tremendous value. It’s a well raced and ready-to-go example of Lancia's legendary rally car.Specification Make: LANCIA Model: FULVIA RALLYE HF Year: 1968 Chassis Number: 81833112492 Registration Number: TBL 82G Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 8185402286651 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 68389 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
**Saleroom Notice - Please note there is an element of finishing work required to the radiator, driveshafts and oil system. Because of this the estimate has been lowered to £17,000 - £20,000. Required parts are included in the sale.** An historically significant car, one of the very first, freshly rebuilt and HSCC-eligible. Formula Ford 1600 has pride of place as the world’s most successful single seater formula. The brainchild of Walter Hayes, Ford’s Marketing Director who saw the potential of using a blueprinted 1,600cc Kent engine mated to a thoroughbred single seater to create the ultimate level playing field for emerging talent. The rules were simple, tubular space frame chassis (from any manufacturer), four gears, control tyres and steel brakes. The result took the world by storm and the formula counts names such as Senna, Schumacher, Fittipaldi, Hakkinen, Button, Räikkönen and Hill among its alumni. Founded by Alex Francis and Bill Harris, Alexis first made an impact in Formula Junior racing in the early 1960s, building cars for its in-house Team Alexis, however, their decision to become involved with Formula Ford was the right one, proving an outstanding success both competitively and commercially. The firm’s first FF design was the 'Russell-Alexis' (retrospectively known as the Mk14) following a deal struck to supply cars for the Jim Russell Racing Drivers School, hence the name. The first Formula Ford race was held at Brands Hatch on 2nd July 1967 and the Alexis Mk14 went on to win more races in the following 12 months than any other contender, comfortably eclipsing its main rival, the Lotus 51. The Russell-Alexis evolved into the Alexis Mk15 late in 1968 and this model was the firm’s frontline FF contender for the 1969 season. This beautiful Mk15 is eligible for HSCC’s ever-popular Historic FF1600 championship and is offered fresh from a substantial rebuild by Iain Rowley at Delta Motorsport to a high standard. No stone went unturned in the car’s reconstruction which now boasts a zero miles Barnett engine and a zero miles refreshed Hewland Mk8 gearbox with new input shaft. Meanwhile the chassis has been freshly powder-coated and bodywork all resprayed to a high standard. Brand new dampers and springs take care of the suspension, which also features all new rose-joints and bearings. Additionally, the following are all new: drive shafts, instruments, extinguisher, belts, wheels & tyres, brake callipers and pads, exhaust, brake and clutch lines, clutch release bearing, master cylinders and the battery.Professionally prepared and beautifully presented, this little Alexis is offered 'on the button' and after a spanner check, ready to race. Competitive in class in Historic FF, it would also be fun for an occasional day at Shelsley or Prescott.SpecificationMake: ALEXISModel: MK15Year: 1968Chassis Number: TBCRegistration Number: N/ATransmission: ManualClick here for more details and images
2-litre Triumph Vitesse-based two-seat Special, superbly crafted, beautifully presented and totally evocative of those glamorous Sports Racers from the 1950s. As an ex-pattern maker and fibreglass laminator at Sunseeker Yachts, Glan Richards was totally familiar with contemporary design, yet his passion was for those glorious, curvaceous sports cars and sports racers from the 1950s. Cars created at a time when body panels were hand-shaped with hammers and wheels, dashboards were made of metal, seat belts were optional and impact bumpers, effective crumple zones, airbag steering wheels and pedestrian-friendly front ends were some way in the future.Over a period of approximately ten months, Glan and colleagues shaped and created the Formosas fibreglass bodyshell, incorporating many of the features and styling cues from those fabulous 1950s racers. A close look will offer reminders of Jaguars C-Type, Maseratis 300S, the Ferrari 750 Monza, Astons DBR1 and others but, as the design didn't lean heavily or replicate any particular marque or model, it avoided all the copyright and patent issues that have recently caused replica builders legal problems. The Formosa was designed to accept the chassis and running gear from a Triumph Vitesse or a Reliant Scimitar SE5A and, by utilising the majority of the donor, minus the bodyshell, it retained the cars classic status, registration, chassis number, etc., still a true 1960s classic, just wearing a different suit of clothes. This particular Formosa 120GR is based on a 2-litre Triumph Vitesse first registered on 1st May 1963 and has covered just 13,559 miles since the build. It was assembled in 2019/20 by Formosa 'guru', Dave Thickins and sold to its first owner in December 2021. Motivation is provided by a twin-carb 1,998cc Triumph six-cylinder generating around 100bhp and mated to a 4-speed manual gearbox. The car is finished in an an attractive shade of steel blue metallic, a couple of shades down from Ecurie Ecosse blue enhanced by a single white 'racing stripe'. External sporty features include a single race-style rear headrest, quick release bonnet catches, twin period side mirrors, centre-mounted chrome filler cap, 'Speedster' style Perspex windscreen, Perspex headlamp covers with P700 lamps, an 'egg crate' front grille, painted wire wheels and a full mohair Tonneau cover.More recent work includes custom-made, fully cushioned, sling back blue leather seats, angled correctly for optimum comfort, new harness seat belts, additional trimming to dash and other parts, new rubber mats, a battery cut out switch, K and N filters and an upgraded fuel tank. It's eligible for free historic road tax (ULEZ exempt!), inexpensive classic car insurance and is MOT-exempt.The Formosa is supplied with its current V5C, an MOT valid until 5th December 2024, an HPI 'all clear' certificate, spare keys, knock-on wheel hammer and spinner spanner, Vitesse owners manual and workshop manual, a toolbag with sundry items and its history file.We understand that this good-looking period road-race style special Triumph is great fun to drive and delivers a nostalgic raspy exhaust note through a single exhaust pipe. The unique and poignant Second War bomb and mine disposal G.C., D.S.C. group of ten awarded to Lieutenant-Commander W. E. Hiscock, Royal Navy In his capacity as Controlled Mining Officer at H.M.S. St. Angelo, Malta, he dealt with no fewer than 125 ‘incidents’ at the height of the island’s siege, among them an ‘Italian torpedo machine’ and other unknown types of ordnance: in dismantling the former, which contained a 650lb. high explosive charge fitted with four firing devices and a time fuse, the clock mechanism whirred into action, but Hiscock calmly neutralised the device nonetheless Tragically, he and his wife were killed in a bombing raid on Valetta in February 1942, just a few days after the announcement of his award of the G.C. George Cross (Lieut. (Acting Lieut. Commander) William Ewart Hiscock, D.S.C. R.N. 3rd February 1942); Distinguished Service Cross, G.VI.R., the reverse hallamrked London 1940 and officially dated ‘1941’; 1914-15 Star (Act. Gnr. W. E. Hiscock, R.N.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaf (Gnr. W. E. Hiscock, R.N,.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45; Jubilee Medal 1935, mounted court-style for display, good very fine and better (10) £80,000-£120,000 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- G.C. London Gazette 3 February 1942: ‘For great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty.’ The original recommendation states: ‘Lieutenant (Act. Lt.-Commander) Hiscock was in charge of the salvage, rendering safe and stripping of an Italian Torpedo Machine, which was recovered from 15 feet of water off St. George’s Bay, Malta. The operation of salvaging itself was one of great danger as, apart from the possibility of booby-trapping, no information was available as to the technical mechanism of the explosive head, whilst its behaviour when parted from the body was a matter of complete uncertainty. Rendering safe and stripping of the explosive head after salvage had been carried out personally by Hiscock, helped by Le Bargy [Petty Officer C., awarded the D.S.M., and later still the G.M.]. During the course of the operation the clock mechanism started and it was only cool determination and skill in the face of extreme danger which allowed of a successful conclusion. The machine contained a 650 lb charge of high explosive, fitted with four firing devices, including impact and hydrostatic types.’ Further notes appear in the Honours & Awards File ADM 516/41: ‘Total of all incidents - 125. Two specifically detailed: 1. While dismantling a one-man submarine recovered off Malta and rendering it safe, a special spanner (made in the Dockyard) slipped and started the clock mechanism. The lighter was then alongside N.A.D. but he tackled the mechanism again and succeeded in stopping the clock and withdrawing the detonator. 2. A new type German mine was recently encountered and rendered safe, regardless of the danger of its detonating on the rocks, he had what can only be described as an “all in wrestling match” when it washed to and fro in the heavy scend.’ His calm tackling of these highly dangerous jobs without fuss and with unfailing cheerfulness is, I consider, the highest form of courage and worthy of a very high award.’ D.S.C. London Gazette 14 January 1941: ‘For courage, enterprise and devotion to duty in contact with the enemy.’ William Ewart Hiscock was born in Dorchester, Dorset on 13 January 1886 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in July 1901. Subsequently appointed an Acting Gunner, R.N., in August 1914, his wartime appointments included H.M. Ships Kale, from November 1914, Medea, from June 1915 and Tribune, from June 1918, and he was mentioned in despatches for ‘services in action with enemy submarines’ (London Gazette 20 September 1918, refers). In August 1924, he was appointed a Commissioned Gunner, and, following further seagoing appointments, he joined the Admiralty’s Torpedo and Mining Department in late 1931. Advanced to Lieutenant in March 1934, he was placed on the Retired List in January 1936. Recalled shortly before the renewal of hostilities, Hiscock was posted to the Malta base St. Angelo, where he was appointed Officer in Charge of Controlled Minefields and Parties, and it was in this capacity that he dealt with no less than 125 devices in 1940-42. Awarded the D.S.C. in January 1941, for his ‘courage, enterprise and devotion to duty in contact with the enemy,’ he was also advanced to Acting Lieutenant-Commander. As alluded to in the recommendation for his subsequent award of the George Cross (G.C.), Hiscock’s gallant work extended to all manner of ordnance. A case in point would be the parachute mine that fell in the gardens of Lady Bernard’s Nursing Home in the Villa Portelli. The patients were quickly evacuated to the Blue Sisters Hospital and Hiscock, after gently lowering the mine to the ground - its parachute had got caught up on a wall and a tree - defused it. Tragically, as confirmed by his service record, he and his wife, Alice, were killed in an air raid on 15th February 1942, just 12 days after his G.C. was gazetted. A local newspaper report stated that their home in the married quarters in St. George’s Barracks, St. Julian’s, just north of Valetta, received a direct hit. They were buried in Capuccini Naval Cemetery. Hiscock’s G.C. was presented to one of his daughters by King George VI at Buckingham Palace on 23 June 1942.
