Maritime fine letter dated 1842 of a merchant captain C Skilling giving a report on the activities on his vessel the ‘Kara’ reporting that he had sent a cockney boy about his business because he had for his companions ‘robbers and pickpockets and being time after time corrected for being absent from his duty and neglectful while on board’ and adding that he has ‘a young Black Boy in his room on low wages. He is willing to go for anything I name I will see what he is worth...’ A stark reminder that Dickens described a real world which he saw around him.
