Registration - K462 KWWChassis No. - WBSHC92000GE00042M.O.T. - January 2925Odometer - 191,000Fast becoming an iconic model, wearing a legendary badge, this beautifully-maintained BMW M5 is already a modern classic. ‘K462 KWW’ is a second-generation version of BMW’s M5 range, powered by the Munich firm’s famous 3.8-litre straight-six petrol engine. Driving the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, this stealthy super-saloon can still embarrass many sportscars now, let alone at the time it was new. And of course, that’s not simply in a straight line – BMW’s M Division sprinkled its expertise over the suspension and chassis, ensuring the M5 helped build up the German giant’s now famous reputation for driving dynamics. ‘K462 KWW’ is stylishly presented in black with an Alcantara grey interior which features factory-fitted items such as a sunroof, BMW M alloys, and electric seats. During the vendor’s 16-year ownership, the car was kept off the road from 2014 to 2021, and has had considerable work carried out. It has been largely taken apart, and rewelded where necessary, including jack-in points, inner seals, and floors. The engine has had a full upper rebuild, timing chain and tensioner updated, new clutch, and a reconditioned prop-shaft. The suspension has seen new springs fitted at the front, as well as bushes, joints, and steering joints, while the brakes have new disks and pads all round, with new front callipers. Other work carried out includes new radiators, alternator, water pump, hoses, headlining, and wiper linkage, with the valve clearances carried out twice. And of course, all of this has been documented, with a huge file of paperwork. It is offered with an MOT to 21 April 2025, which does have an advisory for cracked rear tyres, but these will be replaced prior to sale. In addition, the car comes with a full spare, jack, and tool-kit.The vendor describes ‘K462 KWW’ as being in ‘good’ condition throughout, from engine and transmission, to cabin, electrics, paintwork, and bodywork, indicating that this M5 is ready to be driven with no real work required straight away, with the amount of work carefully carried out meaning the buyer can likely shrug off the indicated 191,000 miles showing on the odometer. The BMW M5 technically began with the E28 model in 1985, though this had a ‘soft-launch’ the year before with the M535i, showing just what BMW’s M Division could do, and how well it would be received; the company hasn’t looked back. Originally featuring a 3.5-litre straight six engine, the first generation M5 E28 was superseded in 1988 by the E34 model, which saw the fitment of the M1 supercar’s fabulous straight-six under the bonnet. It reinforced the badge perfectly, and established the M5 as one of the practical performance cars of the late 80s. In 1992 it was revised, with adaptive suspension, performance brakes, and a new 3.8-litre engine, before the introduction of the E39 BMW M5 in 1998, which dropped the straight-six engine in favour of a more powerful V8. · Extensively reconditioned example of BMW’s E34 M5.· Carefully maintained, with comprehensive service history and folder of work carried out.· Highly-sought after model offered in ‘good’ condition throughout.

A RARE NANBAN SIX-PANEL BYOBU SCREEN DEPICTING THE ARRIVAL OF A PORTUGUESE SHIPJapan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Finely painted in ink, watercolors, and gold on paper to depict a Portuguese ship arriving at the port of Nagasaki. The ship is filled with passengers and sailors, some of which perform acrobatic feats as they prepare to dock. A number of smaller boats are approaching land as well, while two boats which are heavily filled with goods are departing. A group of Portuguese men are carrying large boxes and leading a spotted deer toward a bridge, one of the men appears to shrug as he tries to communicate with two Japanese men. The two rightmost panels show a chaotic scene of numerous Japanese and Portuguese men carrying goods in all directions, as well as a fenced terrace with Portuguese noblemen seated at a table and enjoying tea and wine. The screen is further decorated with thick, gold-sprinkled clouds.SIZE (when opened) 88 x 259 cm Condition: Good condition with some wear, minor soiling, occasional light scratches, and few small losses. The scene presents a narrative of the dynamic conflation of East and West around 1600. Portuguese traders reached Japan in 1543, and by 1570 they had selected the Bay of Nagasaki as the ideal natural harbor for the center of their commerce, which was conducted with little or no restriction. The Portuguese nau do trato was known to the Japanese as the kurofune (black ship) or nanban bune, ship of the Nanban, or Southern Barbarians, so called because these foreigners arrive from the south. (The term originated in China, where all foreigners were regarded as barbarians.)The Portuguese made large profits selling Chinese silk to the Japanese in exchange for silver. Some European goods were traded, but for the most part the Iberians served as middlemen between the Chinese and Japanese. The great ship was a three-deck carrack of up to 1,600 tons, and its enormous size and exotic crew and cargo were the cause of much wonder and excitement. The earliest screen of this type is thought to date from the 1590s and is attributed to Kano Mitsunobu (1561/5–1608), who was called from Kyoto to decorate Hideyoshi's Nagoya Castle in northern Kyushu. Mitsunobu may have traveled to Nagasaki to observe the “Southern Barbarians” first hand. The fad for Nanban screens continued into the second quarter of the seventeenth century. The novel subject fascinated the Japanese, and the Kano-school atelier as well as other professional painting studios in Kyoto made numerous versions in the early seventeenth century for clientele prepared to enjoy the strange costumes and odd physiognomy of these tall, hairy and long-nosed Southern Barbarians, a throwback to the outlandish imagery familiar from the iconography of Daoist immortals.Museum comparison:Compare to a related pair of Nanban screens, dated to the first quarter of the 17th century, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession no. 2015.300.109.1, .2.Auction comparison:Compare to a related important Namban screen, dated to the 17th century, sold at Christie's, European Courts Encounter Japan, 11 May 2015, London, lot 8 (sold for 818,500 GBP).

Milne, Alan Alexander (1882-1956) - An a/l, 3pp. 8vo, dated December 1927, from 13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, to an unnamed recipient, ‘’I expect you know the story of the man who took his friend to the bar, and said, with a large and generous air, “Now then, what would you like?” – to which his friend replied that he thought he would like a pint of champagne . “Oh!” said his host, “Well, try thinking of something nearer threepence .” What the Hampstead General Hospital would like is £10,000, and it would be a simplification of its finances if you were charming enough to send them a cheque for that amount in the enclosed envelope; but if you would prefer to think of something nearer threepence I shall understand. Not near enough to give you the bother of buying stamps or postal orders; something in guineàs, I suggest, which will give you no more trouble than the opening of your cheque-book. But just as you like, so long as you help us.The Hampstead General and North-West London Hospital, to give it its full title, which need not all be put on the cheque, has a debt of £10,000, and needs another £5000 of your income in order to pay its way. I could give you further figures of it’s income and expenditure, and the number of patients attended, of the operations performed, but these might not interest you. More interesting perhaps, is this: that where it’s out-patients department now stands in Bayham Street, Camden Town, there once stood the house where Charles Dickens lived as a boy when his father first came to London. His father, you remember, had that habit, which was to descend to Mr Micawber, of living in the hope that something would turn up. It is thus that Hospitals have to live. They can make no promise for the gracious work they do; they just struggle on from day to day, hoping that men will always be generous, women always merciful. So day after day, hospital after hospital makes its appeal to you, and, no doubt, day after day at this time you open such a letter, say with a shrug “Another charity”, and drop it in the fire. Which is why I began with a joke, as something to which one listens more readily. Having listened, will you not now be kind? The reason why I and not the Appeal Secretary, am writing – is writing – (every now and then the stylish language becomes just impossible) – the reason then why one of us and not the other is writing to you is that there are people who look at the signature of a letter first; in which case, sack the appeal secretary, my name would be the more helpful; though whether his hope is that you will have heard of me, or his fear was that you would have heard of him, I do not know. Yet, as a professional writer I could not but share this feeling that I should prove the more readable of the two of us. So I am hoping that you have read this letter but I must warn you that, as a professional writer, I am not satisfied to be read for nothing. The question of the author’s royalties is before you. Send what you can to me at the Hampstead General, and you will be glad and proud afterwards, and I shall be alwaysYour humble and grateful servant,A.A. Milne’’
