Lot 187

A crank wound Swiss (Bells insight) cylinder music box, late 19th century, probably playing 8 airs, (air sheet) missing) on three bells with a distinctive gilt dove hammer, in an amboyna and tulipwood banded case. on bracket feet. 46 cm x 26 cm x 20 cm high The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. Robert started in the Silver departments in Garrards in London at the age of 15 and by the age of 20 he had risen to manage Brompton Gallery in Knightsbridge. Robert had a long and successful career within the antique trade and had a particular passion for Silver and antique Eccentricities, his passion and connoisseurship are reflected in his collection. The case is in good structural order but does have the usual slight bowing of the cover and some elements of minor veneer chips but on the whole, the damage is purely cosmetic., note: no cabinet key is present or paper Air sheet. The movement winds on the crank with moderate resistance, the cylinder runs with a little reluctance, I think a clean and re-oil would probably helpPlease note the box on investigation plays 8 Airs NOT 10 AirsThe Air indicator seems to index the corresponding tunes and all of the hammers seem to coordinate as expected, the comb has the 19th tooth tip from the left hand side missing, also the first tooth on the left seems to be a repair, and the movement has some slight surface corrosion and is evident below the silvering of the register of airs but this is again cosmetic. The above information is of course a guide because any mechanical device of this age will have slight faults and problems, but I have tried to cover them in my condition report.

Lot 190

A Swiss lever wound cylinder music box, probably by George Baker of Geneva, late 19th century (generic) probably playing eight airs, (airs sheet missing) in an ebonised and simulated rosewood case. 43 cm x 21 cm x 14v cm high The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. The mechanism winds and works without hesitation on the lever, it correspondingly stops at the end of the cycle when the lever is set to stop. The comb is intact and I can not see any missing teeth or toothtipsThe cover is as usual slightly cupped or bowed horizontally but does not impede the closing of the lid. The case is a little bumped and scratched due to its age and weight.Cosmetically this item could do with some remedial work but mechanically it functions as expected. As in any old mechanical items, some adjustment or work should be expected.

Lot 184

A Swiss cylinder music box by Paillard C1870s, probably playing eight airs, (airs sheet missing) the cover inlaid with musical trophies.58 cm wide x 22 cm deep The collection of the late Robert HicksonRobert was a noted London antique dealer for over 40 years. The mechanism has no missing teeth from the comb and runs with a little encouragement but once running does not hesitate or falter until stopped. The case has had different hinges and the shortfall in the size of the more recent hinges has been filled with dark wax, this could be remedied with some minor workAs is common in these music boxes the cover has a slight horizontal cup this does not impede its closing. The case is a little cosmetically tired but structurally sound, the movement seems to work well but needs encouragement to start, maybe an oiled/gummed-up regulator as moving this slightly is enough to start the movement.

Lot 40

Colin Middleton RHA RUA MBE (1910-1983) Girl Playing Mozart (1949) Oil on canvas, 76 x 60cm (30 x 24") Signed; Labels verso, one bearing artist mark in ink and dated 1949 and numbered '73' Girl Playing Mozart was painted in 1949, a transformative year for Colin Middleton during which he held his first solo exhibition with the Waddington Galleries in Dublin, which immediately established him as one of the leading contemporary Irish artists. The critic of the Dublin Magaine wrote that “With this show, Middleton, from being just one of the more interesting of the moderns, has become a great painter”.By the winter of 1949, when he was also working on Girl Playing Mozart, Middleton was completing some of his most ambitious canvases of this period, including Give Me to Drink(NMNI) and Isaiah: 54, and Victor Waddington was planning a group exhibition to tour the United States, which would include his work. Waddington welcomed the present painting on its arrival (“The last group of works you sent down are magnificent”), and suggested sending an image of it to those selecting the American exhibition. Female figures from this period of Middleton’s work are often depicted with a suggestion of vulnerability or extreme circumstances, often on the edges of society. Instead, the present painting implies a world of some comfort and security, with a vase of flowers behind the musician, who is dressed elegantly and wearing a bracelet or a watch. Music was, however, often used by Middleton to suggest powerful but elusive forces that run through lives, and the woman’s glance away from her sheet music, her eyes emphasised by the paint surface, hint at an inner life that is hidden from us, and perhaps only expressed through the deeper currents of the music she plays.  Dickon Hall, August 2024
