'Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani (Great Britain)'; vol. 1, fasc. 3, Yorkshire. Oxford University Press, 1983; 23, no. 38, pl. 12 In AD 306, Constantine was hailed emperor in the Roman city of York; he was the first emperor to convert to Christianity. Following his campaigns in the Eastern provinces, Constantine was recalled in 305 AD to fight alongside his father in the province of Britannia. After his father's death in 306 AD, Constantine was acclaimed as 'imperator' by his army at Eboracum (York) eventually being declared victorious after the civil wars against emperors, Maxentius and Licinius to become sole ruler of the Roman Empire in 324 AD. Constantine's Christian belief cannot be underestimated, establishing the foundations of 'Western Christendom'. In 313 AD he was influential in the proclamation of the 'Edict of Milan, declaring tolerance of Christianity within the Roman Empire. Thin leather chinstrap and bronzed officers regimental side buttons. Green leather covering to the underside of the peak, tan leather sweatband and patterned lining to the interior. Very Rare Officers Silver Plated Headdress Badge of the 1st Hants Mounted Rifle Volunteers, the headdress badge in the form of laurel spray with crowned strap having ‘1ST HANTS MOUNTED RIFLE VOLUNTEERS’ and voided figure of man on horseback to the centre. Reverse with pin fitting. This unit was raised in 1860 from 50 members of Hambledon Hunt by Colonel John Bower JP. The unit was merged into the Hampshire Yeomanry Cavalry in 1878. A CONTINENTAL WALNUT PISTOL CASE FOR A LONG-BARRELLED PINFIRE REVOLVER, Belgian market, measuring externally 12 1/4in. x8 1/2in. x 3in., lined in the Continental manner in red velvet (faded) for a 7mm Lefaucheux style revolver with folding trigger and approximately 6in. barrel, complete with turn-screw, cleaning rod, oil bottle and lidded ammunition compartment, no key.
