STAR WARS: PANASONIC COMMERCIAL (1988) - Set of Three Hand-Drawn Ralph McQuarrie Sparky Concept Sketches - Three Sparky concept sketches hand-drawn by renowned concept illustrator Ralph McQuarrie for a series of Star Wars-themed Panasonic commercials. Beginning in 1988, franchise creator George Lucas appeared with R2-D2 and a new creation, a genius talking robot named Sparky, in ads promoting Panasonic's high-tech Maclord videocassette players. At the specific request of Panasonic president Masaharu Matsushita, Sparky was designed by McQuarrie, whose concept designs for the original trilogy resulted in some of the most iconic and futuristic characters, sets, and technologies in modern science-fiction. This set consists of three sheets of vellum, each featuring a concept sketch of Sparky as seen from the front or left side rendered in graphite and watercolour. One sketch is signed by McQuarrie, while another is annotated "3 U D" and taped to backing paper. The sketches all exhibit smudging and bent corners. TOTAL RECALL (2012) - Synth Police Droid Costume Display - A synth police robot suit display from Len Wiseman's Total Recall. Robots were used to police the territories of the United Federation of Britain and the Colony, and thousands were later used by Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) as a Colony-invading army.The suit comprises a helmet with a black acrylic facemask; a jumpsuit; chest and back guards; a pair of shoulder guards; a waist cover; two arm pieces; a pair of gloves; leg armour; two shin guards; and a pair of shoes. Most of the armour is made of resin and hand-painted, with the waist cover made of brown-painted rubber. The jumpsuit is an elasticated black fabric and has white printed sections to replicate mechanical components, enhanced with CGI in the finished film. Several sections feature printed "Federal Police" badges. The suit comes on a custom-built display stand. It has wear from production use, including some cracking to the rubber sections, paintwear, and white paint markings.
