Mouseman - unusual circa. 1930s adzed oak tub-shaped armchair, barrel-back with woven leather, the upright carved with mouse signature, figured panelled sides enclosing panelled seat, arched seat rail, stile supports with block feet on castors, by the workshop of Robert Thompson, Kilburn Notes: made by apprentice Graham Hayes (1914-1943). Hayes went on to become a founding member of the Small Scale Raiding Force (SSRF), a special commando unit under the Special Operations Executive (SOE), established by Winston Churchill in 1940. Tragically, he was captured in 1942 and held prisoner by the Gestapo until his execution in 1943. Recently, Hayes has been featured in Guy Ritchie's film 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare' under the name "Graham 'Henry' Hayes," portraying his role in the SOE. Qty: 1Footnote:The original invoice from 1941 referencing other items from this suite of furniture refers to a 3' chest of drawers. This model is 3' wide, but taller having the extra tier of drawers to the standard 2-over-3, and elements of its construction suggest a later date of production. Condition report:Some splash and small ring marks to the top surface. There is a large watermark towards the base of the right hand side. Left hand side has some spot marks. One or two of the drawer pulls are a little loose. The bottom drawer has some mildew marks and is a little stiff to close fully. But overall the tone is very good. Drawers are still solid. No splitting. Mouse retains good definition in the carving.

The rich colour is very even throughout. Some light spotting to the right hand side panelling. The left hand door has one panel (fourth row from the bottom) with a dark stain on the surface. The lower hinges are each missing one screw head. Other screw heads show slight wear. The interior has some dark staining to the base plank. The interior of the right hand cupboard has two screw holes about mid-way up where presumably an additional hanging rail/ chord has been added (for ties, for example).

There are side rails which simply have cast iron fittings that bolt into the upright posts of the headboard and footboard. Assembled in the saleroom, with the bed base in place, it remains a very sturdy bed. The posts are 3inch thick posts, the boards are 1 inch thick, the rails are 1 1/4inch thick. There are surface splash/water marks randomly across the surface, most noticeably on the left-hand side rail (as you standing looking at the bed). The headboard has one large great patch to the right, and a smaller grease patch to the left-hand half. Some slight colour bleaching with the lefthand side of the bed is slightly paler than the right. The footboard has a white surface mark on the back - some sort of dried paste? The mouse remains well defined on the footboard.

The additional images have been taken with it in front of the 1940s wardrobe with a richer tone you might expect from this period. All surfaces have splash marks - water and other coloured liquid splashes. This includes the top surface, and interior shelves are marked and stained. No evident splits. Mouse retains very good definition and detailing. There is nothing untoward to the underside, not sure what that is in the main image.

A fairly even colour throughout. No splits. The interior is clean although is strongly odoured of mothballs. Some light marks to the top surface but unless you're taller than 6' you're unlikely to notice.
Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson of Kilburn, an oak 5' dining table and six chairs, the table of trestle form, the pedestals joined by a floor stretcher, the chairs comprising two armchairs and four dining chairs each with lattice back, burgundy studded leather seats, carved signature mice, table length 152.5cm, width 86.5cm, height 74cm. Qty: 7 Condition report:The table and chairs have been well used as a family dining table and so have marks and wear as expected. The colour to the table top is a little uneven, with the outlines of the adzed finish showing darker, and the overall finish is a little dry. Some spot stains and marks across the top, but no heavy scratches or splits. The base also has some random splash stains and marks through kicking over the years, but is sound and free of any significant chips or splits.One carver has been more used over the years with the tops of the arms showing a little wear and the ends of the arms discoloured through rubbing/ grease. The same carver has a splash to the centre of the front seat rail on the leatherette seat but it also also caused some spot corrosion to the studs, and also the wooden rail. Aside from this, all frames are sound. No splits or repairs. The other seats are relatively free of any wear except a few other random studs are oxidised slightly. AGain splash stains and kick marks through use, and some slight colour variation with some of the backs being a little paler.
