Lot 30

Luigi Amidani (Parma, 1591 - after 1629)“Martyrdom of St. Matthias”Oil on canvas. 206 x 125 cm.This is a painting that was previously unknown to the art market. This large format picture was already mentioned and reproduced in 1965, in an art magazine in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. The private collection where this canvas was found, together with another (“Martyrdom of St. Andrew”), with which it was paired, is also located in the same town. It was then considered a Luigi Miradori, according to another scholar (Pérez Sánchez). And previously, in the 19th century, it had other and varied attributions. Professor Massimo Pullin made a study on Amidani (1591-1629) and an attribution to this Italian Baroque painter. He used the method of viewing and comparing as many paintings by the artist as possible from many world art galleries, cathedrals and private collections, as well as compiling all the writings and studies related to this Italian painter written until then, with opinions of scholars and curators of art galleries such as the Louvre itself. For his rigorous study, he observed and contemplated in depth all the work by Amidani that existed in Spain (the so-called “Iberian stage” of the painter in which he broke loose from being a mere copyist): on the one hand, a series of ten small paintings (0.43 x 0.35 cm) depicting the “Martyrdoms of the Apostles”, which were in the Royal Academy of San Fernando belonging to the novitiate of the Jesuits in Seville, (then attributed to Tintoretto) and which were in the Academy before 1796 (brought by Ponz); This attribution changed in 1804, in the "Inventario de Alhajas" (Inventory of Treasures), and the new attribution was to Pablo de Céspedes - a painter from Cordoba, as was then noted in ink on the back of the frames. This mistaken attribution was maintained throughout the 19th century, until it was modified by Alfonso Pérez Sánchez in the 1963/64 inventory in which, he proposed Luigi Miradori as the artist. Massimo Pullini in the 21st century (2020) disputed the previous authorship as he recognized the style of the Italian Baroque painter who accompanied Velázquez on his first trip to Italy, in most of this small series. In addition, Luigi Amidani was a favorite disciple of Bartolomé Schedoni, a painter linked to the Farnese family who, in turn, had a close relationship with Velázquez on the occasion of that first trip to Italy. Some of these small-format paintings, which were always on view to students and teachers at the Academy, served as inspiration for later paintings. Massimo, on the other hand, also studied the remains of what could have been another series of the same subject (martyrdoms of apostles) in a larger format, in Spain and in other art galleries around the world, which house the martyrdoms of St. Peter and St. Paul in the Museum of Fine Arts in Valencia, and those of St. Andrew and St. Matthias in a private collection in Jerez de la Frontera, (one of them, the painting we are commenting on).In the small format painting “The Martyrdom of St. Matthias”, the saint is shown lying down and dressed, being viciously stoned by his executioners. In the large format work we have here in our catalog, he appears half-naked, in the style of St. Andrew, St. John, St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Bartholomew..., the torsos are exposed and covered by peplos or remains of tunics or torn and hanging clothes. Professor M. Pullini observes the figures' morphology and expressions as being similar to those of the large format painting from Jerez de la Frontera, faces “that can well be defined as neo-Gothic, full of a hardness that at times borders on the grotesque”. In this large canvas the saint is depicted as being stripped between two soldiers, and in the foreground, kneeling, is the one who announces the method of martyrdom, carrying a basket full of stones. According to tradition, the saint was stoned in Judea around the year 80, after being condemned to death by the High Priest, and later beheaded with an axe for having opposed Caesar. His face does not lose courage or strength, and despite the intuition that he is going to die, he looks on with the strength of the One who fills him with his truth. The large vertical format of the painting must certainly have been chosen to complete the pictorial collection of some chapel or church. Crudeness in the images, pronounced foreshortenings, and violent effects of light are very reminiscent of the influences exerted by the master Caravaggio, and his mature style and the abrupt chromatic contrasts are very much influenced by Ribera. Two other canvases also studied by Massimo could come from this same large-format series.  No longer in Spain, the so-called “Stoning of an Apostle” which appeared on the London antique market and the “Martyrdom of St. Paul” that can be found in the Schloss Weißenstein in Pommersfelden (Germany). Reference bibliography:Bibliografía de referencia:- Luzón Nogué, José María (ed.) Goya y Lucientes (Francisco José de) Los Desastres de la Guerra, third edition, complete set of eighty etchings with aquatint, drypoint and engraving, on sturdy ivory wove paper without watermarks, title and text from the second edition, each platemark approx. 152 x 198 mm (6 x 7 3/4 in), sheets each approx. 235 x 335 mm (9 1/4 x 13 1/4 in), mounted on stubs, occasional marginal spotting, some surface dirt, later calf, rubbed and scuffed, oblong folio, Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid, [1903]Literature:cf. Harris 121-200*** Goya's etchings illustrate events he witnessed in Madrid and Zaragoza, his birthplace and where these works were produced after he fled the court in 1810-15. These events were the result of the Peninsular War (1808-1814), in which Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Spain and was met with bloody resistance from the local population, before being defeated by British and Spanish troops. The images were kept in the artist's country estate, Quinta del Sordo, and were owned by Goya's son Javier until his death in 1854.  The war scenes are devoid of the traditional heroism and triumphalism of such representations; the artist focuses on the horror of the war in a modern and original way and surprises by not putting blame exclusively on either side. The French are condemned for the occupation and the Spanish for excessive violence.

Miguel Cabrera (Antequera de Oaxaca, Mexico, 1695 - Mexico, 1768)‘Virgin of Guadalupe with apparitions’.Oil on copper. Signed "Michl Cabrera pinxit"42,5 x 42 cm. Important representation of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which includes the apparitions and the Indian Juan Diego. It has handwritten legend in Latin: "Non fecit taliter omni nationi" (He did nothing the same with any other nation) in reference to the words pronounced by Benedict XIV when he was presented with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and admiring its beauty, he approved the works of the Guadalupe patronage in Mexico.Cabrera is considered the greatest exponent of 18th century Viceroyalty painting, with a production that the Dallas Museum of Art defines as "legendary: more than 309 works from his great studio have been documented".Miguel Mateo Maldonado y Cabrera was born on February 27, 1695 in Antequera, present-day Oaxaca, Mexico, a fact known from the painter's will in 1768.He was the son of unknown parents and godson of a mulatto couple. He moved to Mexico City in 1719, where he began his artistic training, passing through the workshop of Juan Correa in the capital of the Viceroyalty.Cabrera painted altarpieces in the Jesuit church of Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico, in the church of Santa Prisca in Taxco, Guerrero and in the cathedrals of Mexico City and Puebla.Cabrera was not only a painter, but he also participated in the attempt to found an academy of Arts in 1753 and in 1756 he was consecrated as an intellectual, not only as an artist, since he published a narration about the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe in 1756 entitled "Maravilla americana y conjunto de raras maravillas observadas con la dirección de las reglas del arte de la pintura", a narration about the image of the Virgin Guadalupe in the printing press of the Jesuit college of San Ildefonso. In addition to easel painting, his production includes the design of altarpieces, large format works, as well as small copper works and nun's shields. Cabrera's religious painting produces figures of remarkable beauty, a beauty understood under the ideological assumptions of the devotion of the time. It is a refined art that possesses a well-arranged chromatic richness, is sustained by a great work of composition and, no less important, a subtle and expressive drawing.Of all the painters of that time, Cabrera was the one with the greatest personality; the conventional treatment in his figures was undoubtedly the basis of his way of painting, because he placed in his paintings models that were not ideal, but corresponded to people that the artist knew and treated, as when he incorporated in some paintings, portraits of donors or the so-called "prelates" because he had the need to observe directly and copy from nature. He was appointed chamber painter of Archbishop Manuel Rubio y Salinas, who commissioned him to study and paint the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, reproducing the ayate. The image was sent to Pope Benedict XIV, from whom he obtained the highest recognition as a painter of Guadalupe. Among the portraits he painted, the one of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, kept in the National Museum of History, and the one of Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, located in the Museum of Colonial Art in Morelia, Michoacán,Mexico. He was also a painter for the Society of Jesus, for whose churches he produced numerous works. In 1753 he was named president for life of the Academy of San Carlos. His work is preserved in many churches and convents in Mexico. It is also present in numerous public and private collections. Two of his images of the Virgin of Guadalupe are in the Vatican Museum.Another, made in 1756, for the temple of San Francisco Javier, is preserved in the National Museum of the Viceroyalty. The Museum of Art of Dallas, conserves a Santa Gertrudis La Magna by Miguel Cabrera and another representation of the Saint, also by Cabrera and dated in 1768, is part of the collection of the Museum José Luis Bello y Zetina of Puebla, Mexico.Likewise, we highlight an important series of the Caste paintings of 1763 that is conserved in the collection of the Museum of America in Madrid. They depict families, father, mother and child of the various castes and social strata, in everyday life situations. Finally, mention should also be made of the Pinacoteca de La Profesa or the Andrés Blaisten Collection in Mexico, as depositories of Cabrera's work. The Museum of America in Madrid is currently exhibiting a very important retrospective of the painter. Reference Bibliography:- Andres Blaisten Museum. Most of these sources were derived from the highly influential publications of the findings of the excavations by the Royal Court under the title 'Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte,' as published between 1757-1798 by the Stamperia Realeor Royal Printing Press. In her landmark 1986 publication on the Real Fabbrica Ferdinandea, Angela Caròla-Perrotti argues that the service was intended by Venuti to show the continuation between the ancien régime of Charles III, and that of his son, Ferdinand IV (p. 327). For Venuti, there was a personal interest; from 1740 onwards his father, Marcello Venuti, had been director of the Archaeological projects responsible for the excavations and indeed publication of the many volumes of 'Le Antichità di Ercolano Esposte'. Domenico Venuti himself, besides being director of the Real Fabbrica, was appointed Director General of the Excavations of the Kingdom. The service would have been completed with a series of twelve busts modelled by Filippo Tagliolini, all in biscuit, again taken from famous sculptures from the collection of Antiquities, now kept in the Museo Archeologico in Naples.Pieces from this service come to the market only very rarely and few are kept in private collections. For an ice pail from the same service see Angela Caròla-Perrotti, Fascination of Fragility, 2010, p. 323. A soup-tureen from this service was sold at Christie's London, 7 July 1997, lot 286 and the companion soup-tureen on 13 March 1989, lot 44. A plate from the service was sold by Christie's London on 27 April 1995, lot 144, two ice pails were sold at Sotheby's New York, 23 October 2004, lot 6, and a biscuit bust from the service was sold at Sotheby's Milan, 19 December 2006, lot 341. Most recently three pieces, including a plate, from this service were sold at Sotheby's, The collection of Giovanni & Gabriella Barilla, 14 March 2012, lots 228, 233 and 234. Another rare plate from the service was sold in these Rooms, 17 June 2015, lot 37.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
