In 1986, Plumb organized the "Space Fantasy & Reality Art Expo" at the Maturango Museum in Ridgecrest, California, to benefit the handicapped. The event was supported by contributions from Plumb's artist friends and even Lucasfilm - all of whom loaned materials to Plumb for the display. It was through these personal relationships that Plumb acquired many of the finest pieces in his collection. Throughout the years, Plumb organized or appeared at countless other events and shows, where he proudly displayed his collection and discussed his passion for Star Wars original art with both artists and fans. In 1996, Plumb hosted a panel at San Diego Comic Con on collecting Star Wars artwork specifically. * Bookplates. A collection of 46 bookplates engraved by John Augustus Charles Harrison (1872-1955), seventeen being on large paper and three bearing remarques and two signed in pencil by the artist, mostly armorial bookplates, including for the 8th Duke of Northumberland (seal armorials from 1919, two sizes), Thomas Trappes-Lomax, Lord & Lady Lee of Fareham, Ian Mackenzie, and Baron van Eetvelde, but sometimes with important pictorial elements, such as for Colman, Kruse, Arthur Shephard, and Thairlwall; owners of fully pictorial plates include newspaper magnate Alfred Harmsworth (WPB 1903), Ralph Cator, Maud King, Reginald Pontifex, and Herbert Wood, plus the engraver's own Garden of Eden pictorial ex-libris of 1896, and his last bookplate (a seal in black and in sepia dating from 1954 for his second son, Herbert), the majority in near mint condition with only half a dozen showing any foxing or signs of handling (and one folded), a few smaller ones hinged on to mounts but largely loose and all contained in a plastic folder, together with a copy of Brian North Lee's J.A.C. Harrison: Artist & Engraver (1983), with a biography and checklist of all of Harrison's bookplates, original printed wrappers, 4to, VGQTY: (2)NOTE:The collection comes from Harrison's archive. Whether armorial or pictorial, Harrison's ex-libris display the skill of a master copper-engraver. His work spanned six decades and resulted in the creation of some 350 bookplates. After training in Birmingham, Harrison was employed in 1891 by Waterlows where he worked for eight years as an ornamental engraver, then turning freelance before producing many stamps and banknotes while again working for Waterlows. From 1896 ex-libris were commissioned from him through London booksellers J. & E. Bumpus and bore the initials of their shop manager WPB. In 1908 Harrison severed the connection, partly out of frustration that his work was discredited. Other bookplates originated via Truslove & Hanson or by direct contact with the owners.

A DEEPLY-PIERCED AND HOLLOWED SCHOLAR'S ROCKProbably Qing DynastyAttractively and dramatically created to simulate a natural Lake Tai boulder as a stimulus to scholarly activity, the well-patinated surface with a multitude of pierced apertures, wood stand. Overall 26.5cm (10 1/2in) high. (2).Footnotes:或清 英石賞石Provenance: Ralph M. Chait Galleries, New York, 9 May 2003A European private collection來源:Ralph M. Chait Galleries,紐約,2003年5月9日歐洲私人收藏Hollowed and pierced rocks were highly regarded by the scholarly-elite in China because they recalled high mountains. The high peaks and ability to produce water, the life giving element, from the clouds swirling around them, were seen as providing the closest connection with heaven. Images of hermits within mountains appear to have emerged in early China in connection with times of political turmoil, such as the Six Dynasties (AD 420-589). At later times, however, these images became increasingly associated with the scholarly elites and their growing interest of disconnecting from the world of contemporary affairs to find solace in nature, where they could forge their identity as poets, painters and calligraphers. Chait Galleries,紐約,2003年8月5日歐洲私人收藏The present figure depicts Shakyamuni Buddha practicing extreme asceticism in the wilderness during his search for enlightenment. During this time, he realised the futility of such self-punishment and eventually attained enlightenment through meditation, balance and moderation. This representation of the Buddha became especially popular in China during the Yuan dynasty and continued into the Ming and Qing periods. These representations were associated with the Chan school of Buddhism, which encouraged more individualistic paths to enlightenment. Ralph Hurst (American, 1918-2003), 'Goose', onyx, signed 'Ralph Hurst' and numbered '9282', on a revolving marble plinth, 31cm wide 15cm deep 21.5cm high Ralph Hurst was born in Decatur, Indiana, USA, and attended Indiana University. In 1953, he moved to Miami, Florida, where he was discovered and lured to Florida State University to become a member of the art faculty for twenty-seven years. Professor Emeritus Hurst fondly remembered his teaching experience in ceramics, constructive design, woodworking, synthetics, supervising art education majors and teaching elementary art education teachers on campus, as well as several years of in-service art classes to teachers in kindergarten and elementary classes in Dade, Palm Beach and Escambia counties. A highlight of his Florida State University career was receiving three faculty grants, one of which provided the opportunity to have a studio in Florence, Italy, carving in alabaster and marble. In 2002, Florida State University honoured Hurst with a retrospective in the Museum of Fine Arts, showing examples of his award-winning works in wood, marble, alabaster, bronze, steatite, ceramics, paint, and synthetics. Considered preeminent amongst sculptors in the US, and best known for his elegant and sensuous alabaster carvings of figures and birds, Hurst's strength as a sculptor was the strong repetition of rhythmic carving and graceful lines reminiscent of the classics. Hurst was quoted as saying 'In the hours of creativity, when I engage in shaping boulders into form and the form becomes alive and a thing of beauty, my spirit soars'. Condition ReportSome minor scuffing and scratches to the body of the goose. Some spotting along the back and tails. The plinth is mounted on a revolving plinth - to allow the sculpture to be rotated.

Lot 298
