White/Boon 55ProvenienzDie Provenienz des Grossteils der heute noch erhaltenen Druckplatten, von denen sich die allermeisten mittlerweile in öffentlichen Sammlungen befinden, lässt sich folgendermassen zusammenfassen:Dokumentarisch greifbar werden 75 von Rembrandts Druckplatten erstmals in einer Auktion des Nachlasses von Pieter de Haan, einem Amsterdamer Händler, im Jahre 1767. Die meisten davon stammten wohl ursprünglich aus dem Besitz von Clement de Jonghe, einem Freund des Künstlers.56 dieser Platten wurden an dieser Auktion vom Amsterdamer Kunsthändler Pierre Fouquet erworben, der offenbar im Auftrag des französischen Sammlers Claude-Henri Watelet bot. Letzterer besass bei seinem Tod insgesamt sogar 83 Rembrandt-Platten.Watelets Bestand an Rembrandt-Platten wurden auf dessen Nachlassauktion 1786 vom französischen Graphik-Verleger Pierre-François Basan in Paris erworben, der sie erstmals im Jahre 1789 als "Recueil de quatre-vingt-cinq estampes originales... par Rembrandt" publizierte. Weitere Auflagen wurden von ihm und nach seinem Tod von seinem Sohn Henry-Louis Basan bis 1810 publiziert.Anschliessend gingen die Platten in den Besitz von Auguste Jean über, der sie, und nach seinem Tode 1820 seine Witwe, ebenfalls publizierte.Nach 1846 erwarb der Kupferstecher Auguste Bernard die Platten aus dem Nachlass der Witwe Jean. Bernard brachte zwar keine Gesamtauflagen in Form von Alben mehr heraus, zog aber sicherlich weiterhin einzelne Drucke ab. Sein Sohn Michel verkaufte die Platten um 1907 an Victor Alvin-Beaumont.Alvin-Beaumont liess die Platten rahmen. Nach erfolglos gebliebenen Versuchen, sie geschlossen u. a. an das Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam und dem British Museum in London zu vermitteln, verkaufte Alvin-Beaumont sie schliesslich 1938 an den amerikanischen Sammler Robert Lee Humber, der sie als Leihgabe dem North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh übergab. Nach dem Tode Humbers im Jahre 1970 gerieten die Platten in Vergessenheit, verblieben aber im Besitz der Erben Humber.Zu Beginn der 1990er Jahre wurde der amerikanische Graphikhändler Robert M. Light wieder auf sie aufmerksam und erwarb sie gemeinsam mit der Londoner Firma Artemis Fine Arts 1993 von den Erben Humbers. Dies bot Museen und Sammlern in aller Welt die Möglichkeit, ein oder mehrere Exemplare für ihre Sammlungen zu erwerben. So gelang auch diese Platte in die Sammlung von Eberhard W. Pottinger, 4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, attached Dorsetshire Regiment, who died of wounds at Kut al Amara on 30 September 1915, the first man of the Battalion to die due to enemy action in the Great War 1914-15 Star (1127 Pte. W. C. Pottinger. Devon: R.); British War and Victory Medals (1127 Pte. W. C. Pottinger. Devon. R.) extremely fine (3) £160-£200 --- William Charles Pottinger was born in Withycombe Raleigh, Exmouth, Devon, in 1888. A farm labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the 4th (Territorial) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Embodied on 5 August 1914, he embarked with the 1/4th Battalion on the TS Nevasa at Southampton and disembarked at Karachi on 10 November 1914. A draft of 25 men from the Battalion, including Private Pottinger, under Lieutenant Snell, were attached to the 2nd Battalion, Dorset Regiment at Kut al Amara, Mesopotamia on 20 May 1915. He died of wounds at Kut al Amara on 30 September 1915, aged 28, and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. He is recorded as the first man from the 4th Battalion to die due to enemy action in the Great War. Sold with copied research.
