JOHN PHILLIP RA HRSA (BRITISH 1817 - 1867), THE PET OF THE FAMILY oil on panel, titled in presentation plaque framedimage size 32cm x 24cm, overall size 55cm x 46cm Note: Scottish painter, active mainly in London. He began as a specialist in paintings of Scottish life and character in the manner of Wilkie, but following visits to Spain in 1851, 1856, and 1860 he became celebrated for picturesque Spanish genre scenes and was known as ‘Spanish’ Phillip or ‘Phillip of Spain’. His style was fluent and colourful, often with a picture postcard flavour. He also painted portraits. One hundred and sixty-one of his paintings are held in UK public collections.

Family Group: Pair: Driver J. T. Martin, Royal Artilllery British War and Victory Medals (137069 Dvr. J. T. Martin. R.A.); Memorial Plaque (James Thomas Martin); together with the related miniature awards, nearly extremely fine Pair: Attributed to Leading Aircraftwoman Dorothy M. Colwell, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Defence and War Medals 1939-45, unnamed as issued, with ticker tape slips issued to L.A.C.W. No.469956, noting the issue of the 1939-45 War Medal only, in flattened card box of issue, these both later issues, good very fine (5) £120-£160 --- James Thomas Martin was born in 1890 in Briton Ferry, Glamorganshire. He was the son of James and Harriet Martin of Villiers Street. His father was in business as a fishmonger. He was educated at the Neath County School and afterwards established his own fishmonger business at 20 Villiers Street. He attested for service in 1916 and was posted to France for service in the Royal Field Artillery. He served as a Driver with 11th Brigade, R.F.A, on the Western Front. In January 1919, prior to demobilisation he became a victim of the Spanish Flu. He died on 23 January 1919 and is buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. His sister Harriet M. Martin, married a Sidney Colwell in 1918. Sold with a damaged postcard photograph of the recipient, and copied research. Dorothy Martin Colwell was born in Briton Ferry in 1922, the daughter of Harriet M. Martin and Sidney Colwell. She served in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force in the Second World War, enlisting sometime after November 1942.
Three: Able Seaman V. G. C. Walker, Royal Navy, who served in H.M.S. Minotaur at the Battle of Jutland 1914-15 Star (J.32923, V. G. C. Walker, Boy. 1., R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (J.32923 V. G. C. Walker. A.B. R.N.) mounted as worn, contact marks, good fine and better (3) £60-£80 --- Victor George Charles Walker was born in Croydon, Surrey, on 28 August 1898 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 3 November 1914. He served in H.M.S. Minotaur from 23 July 1915 until the cessation of hostilities, and was present in her at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, when Minotaur served as flagship of the 2nd Cruiser Squadron. Advanced Leading Seaman on 12 July 1917, he was shore pensioned on 28 August 1928, after 12 years’ man’s service. Sold with two postcard photographs of the recipient, and copied record of service.
A Great War ‘Western Front’ M.M. group of four awarded to Sergeant G. Dunn, Royal Field Artillery, who was wounded in November 1914 Military Medal, G.V.R. (33854 Sjt. G. Dunn. R.F.A.); 1914 Star, with later slide clasp (33854 Sjt. G. Dunn. R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medals (33854 Sjt. G. Dunn. R.A.) polished, very fine (4) £300-£400 --- M.M. London Gazette 20 August 1919. George Dunn was born in Liverpool in 1886 and attested for the Royal Field Artillery at Liverpool on 9 February 1906. He served with them in India from 21 September 1906 to 20 February 1912, and having been promoted Sergeant on 5 August 1914 served with the 26th Brigade during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 August 1914, receiving a gun shot wound to the back on 2 November 1914, and being evacuated back home. Returning to France with the 181st Brigade on 2 June 1916, he was appointed Battery Rough Rider on 1 April 1917, and for his services during the Great War was awarded the Military Medal. He was discharged, being no longer physically fit for War service, on 12 May 1919, and was awarded a Silver War Badge. Sold with the recipient’s large ‘Honourable Discharged’ scroll; Discharge Certificate; Second Class Certificate of Education, dated 29 April 1910; a group postcard photograph in which the recipient is identified; and copied service papers and other research.

Interesting collection of Second World War Nazi German ephemera from the collection of Charles Morse who served in the Royal Artillery, by family repute he collected the items from Hitler's office at the end of War. The collection comprises seven envelopes addressed to Adolf Hitler, one postcard addressed to Adolf Hitler, three Golden Wedding certificates bearing printed signatures, a Swastika branded folder and similar envelope, together with three documents bearing Adolf Hitler's signature in ink, possibly signed by the Fuhrer.Provenance: By family decent.
