An opulent silver jug boasting a graceful silhouette with a high-arching, flat handle terminating at each end with a pair of applique palmettes joining it to the rim and body of the vessel. The elegant pitcher features a flared mouth, an attenuated neck, and a broad, rounded shoulder that tapers to a flat foot. The base of the handle is embellished with a cast moulded face of a satyr shown with a long beard and hair made in an extremely naturalistic manner. Size: 120mm x 120mm; Weight: 236g Provenance: Private UK collection, acquired from the private collection of Mr. R. Unger; previously with a London gallery; acquired in the 1970s on the UK art market. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. PITCHER | Boleslawiec (Bunzlau) (Poland / Polish 1768) | 1768 | Boleslavec (Bunzlau) earthenware jug with a pewter lid | 42 cm | Lot description | The jug comes from Boleslawiec, a well-known pottery center in Lower Silesia (formerly Bunzlau). A distinctive brown glaze covers the entire vessel, which is decorated with plastic floral motifs and a heraldic coat of arms, typical of the region. On the front of the jug is the date "1768", which indicates its production in the second half of the 18th century. The jug is finished with a tin lid, which is not only functional, but also an aesthetic element characteristic of period ceramics.
