PETER VOULKOS (1924-2002); a stoneware charger, pronounced ribbing covered in crawling mustard glaze, incised signature and date of 1978, diameter 41cm (af).Voulkos was a pivotal American potter and teacher. In 1954 he set up the radical ceramics faculty at the Otis Arts Institute in Los Angeles where dominant influences included Zen Buddhist aesthetics and the surface energy of American Abstract Expressionist painting.
