Ca. 700 BC.A mortar and pestle skillfully fashioned from marble. The mortar features a boat-shaped body with a flat base. The pestle is designed with a tapering profile, where one end is pointed and the other end broad and flat. These tools served as an essential implement for grinding, pulverising, and blending a wide range of materials. Mortars were commonly used in pharmaceutical preparations, food processing, and the production of pigments and cosmetics. The pulverisation of minerals, pigments, and natural materials facilitated the production of dyes, cosmetics, and artistic mediums. Marble was used due to its durability and aesthetic appeal, attesting to the Egyptians' fondness of combining functionality with aesthetic excellence.Size: 90mm x 275mm; Weight: 3.7KgProvenance: Property of a London Ancient Art gallery, acquired on the US art market; formerly in David Hendin collection.
