ENFIELD, ENGLAND AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE .303 BOLT-ACTION SNIPER-RIFLE, MODEL 'BAILEY'S SHARPSHOOTERS No1MKIII*', serial no. 6140, WITH ACCESSORIES, the rifle dated for 1916, with 25 1/2in. exposed barrel, the fore-stock deliberately cut back to 'sporter' style favoured by the unit 'Bailey's South African Sharpshooters' in 1917, the fore-sight unprotected, the elevating rear-sight retained, the top of barrel near breech fitted with a telescopic sight mount (currently loose), the top-wood adapted for same, open receiver with side claw mount, no magazine cut-off or long range volley sight, oval cocking piece, side safe, walnut butt-stock, the left side of butt carved with a circular panel containing ts 'B.S.A.S' around a depiction of a springbok's head, ten-round detachable magazine and fitted with a canvas webbing sling, together with its original Aldis Bros, London telescopic sight no. 68774, also dated 1916 and marked with a matching number to rifle, the mounts applied and signed 'J. AN ENGINEER'S MODEL FOR THE FAMED H.M.SUBMARINE TALLY-HO, CIRCA 1943 heavily cast in solid brass and complete with conning tower with snorkel and periscope, main and secondary armament, fore and aft diving planes, torpedo tubes, ballast tanks, twin propeller shaft and rudder, mounted to twin brass supports to circuit board base with plate -- 5½ x 18in. (14 x 46cm.)Footnote: A 'T'-Class submarine built by Vickers Armstrong as P-317 and renamed by Winston Churchill who decreed submarines should also be named Tally-Ho proved to be one of the most successful hunters of the war. Operating from her base at Trincomalee from commissioning in March 1943 to January 1945 she sank 21 assorted vessels, including the large Japanese light cruiser Kuma, the German submarine UIT-23, as well as saving downed allied airmen and dropping special forces in quiet coves. She evaded sinking or capture and was broken up in 1967.
