Lucie Rie (1902-1995) was born in Vienna and developed an interest in the decorative arts from a young age, studying under the Head of Ceramics, Michael Powolny, at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule. She later opened her own studio, to great acclaim, becoming a much sought-after ceramicist, exhibiting at the Paris International Exhibition in 1925 and wining a gold medal at the Brussels International Exhibition in 1935. Rie fled the approaching Nazi occupation, establishing herself as a Jewish émigré in London in 1938. She initially created glass and ceramic buttons for the Orplid Glass Studio, although she is most well-known for her collaborations with Hans Coper (1920-1981), a German émigré, whom she hired as a studio assistant in 1946. The partnership was a fruitful one; Coper was a huge inspiration for Rie, championing her experimentation and love of modernism. She continued to experiment with glazes, enamel colours and forms throughout her long career. Provenance Acquired from Peter Dingley Gallery, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom. Condition ReportOverall in good order. There is a very minor, shallow footrim chip at the edge of the footim and a very minute footrim chip beside this, please see additional image. This has been inspected under UV light and there is no restoration or damage is visible.

The principal condition issue is damage to three cup handles. These, and the more minor issues, are listed in more detail below. Coffee-pot: There is a shallow chip to the underside of the upper part of beak of the bird spout – this is minor and because of its location, it is not noticeable. There is a narrow chip to the tip and side of the finial on the cover – this has been gilded, possibly from the time of manufacture. Teapot: There are two small firing faults to the cover – these date from the time of manufacture. Sugar-bowl: There is a minute flake to one of the gilt scenes. Coffee-cans: Nine of these are in good and useable condition (on one of the nine there is short crack to the upper part of one handle – this is minor, and the cup is useable). There are three cups with condition faults - one handle has been restuck, another handle has been broken off into two sections and one handle has been crudely restored and overpainted. Saucers: There is a rim chip with an associated hairline crack to the border of one of the saucers. The other saucers are in good condition except for some areas of slight wear to the gilding on some of them.
