AN UNUSUAL AND FINELY CARVED FRENCH RENAISSANCE WOOD PANEL BRITTANY, 16TH/17TH CENTURY Lemon or another fruit wood, possibly a back 'splat' or part of a musical device, in low relief, 'Stations of the Cross', mounted on a wood block support splat 53cm long, 9cm wide Provenance: Ex Private London collection This would seem to be a depiction of the 'Arma Christi', or instruments of the Passion of Christ. This subject appears as from the late 15th Century in Christian iconography (going back to a legend about a vision of Pope Gregory) and the subject was heavily promoted in Catholic devotion of 'indulgence prayers' in the following decades. The Reformation opposed to many devotional practices, including these indulgence prayers - and one can only assume that this carved wooden 'splat' was part of a larger liturgic instrument (such as a crucifix, or a relic holder of some kind to be used in processions), probably destroyed in one of the many Church raids of the 16th Century
Roman Period, 30 B.C.-323 A.D. The large liturgical rattle with a columnar handle composed of a bifacial figure of Bes standing on a lotus capital, flanked by seated sphinxes, his feathered crown supporting the bust of goddess Hathor wearing a broad collar and a curling wig, two rearing uraei emerging from the sides to support the base of the rattle, both wearing the pschent crown, above the cobras a standing figure of the goddess Hathor in cow form, wearing a tripartite wig and a sun disc between the horns; the rattle with a looped body with flared outer rims and set with three metal rods to accept metal discs, a pair of reclining lions to the base and the top with three felines surrounding a cockerel, and resting one of their front paws on the bird. Cf. Lacovara, P. et al., The Collector’s Eye: Masterpieces of Egyptian Art from The Thalassic Collection, Atlanta, 2001, for a sistrum with a Bes figure incorporated into the handle; see a late Egyptian prototype of a bronze sistrum with handle in the shape of the god Bes, 30th Dynasty, c. 350 B.C. (Neues Museum, Berlin); see a Roman sistrum in MET, accession no.97.22.2; a bronze sistrum, in the British Museum, inv.no.1756,0101.541; Daremberg, C.V. & Saglio, E. (eds.), Dictionnaire des Antiquités Grecques et Romaines, Paris, 1873-1917. 1.52 kg, 39.5 cm (15 1/2 in.).[A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website]German art market. European private collection, 1970s-early 2000s. Acquired from the above; thence by descent. Private collection, London, UK. Accompanied by an academic report by Dr Raffaele D’Amato. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12348-225588.The sistrum (seshesh in ancient Egyptian) was a rattle-like musical instrument, played exclusively by women in religious ceremonies. It was often decorated with the bust of the goddess Hathor to whom the sistrum was sacred. Their use continued into the Roman period in ceremonies associated with the cult of Isis.
LIBOR FARA (Czech / Bohemian 1925 - 1988) - Queen (Muse) | 1949 | technique: assemblage on wood | 114 x 34 cm | signature: marked on reverse | note: Attached is a copy of the work's authenticity certificate from Dr. Anna Farova | Lot description | Libor Fara, an important Czech artist and scenographer, often straddled the border between surrealism and Dadaism in his work. His work "The Queen (Muse)" from 1949 is an example of the artist's characteristic use of assemblage, where he combines found objects into unusual combinations. In this work, where part of a musical instrument is used, Fara creates a poetic figure of the muse, which combines human and inanimate elements. The work is playful, but at the same time evokes a certain surreal absurdity, typical of the post-war avant-garde. "Queen (Muse)" is an example of Fara's ability to explore the relationship between art, object and human imagination. | condition report*In case of missing photos, please feel free to contact us.

Rory Gallagher: A Bjarton Acoustic Guitar,Early 1960s, Indistinct serial no. 8 164 stamped to top of headstock, labelled inside Tillverkare Bjarton Musikinstrumentfabrik Bjarnum - Sweden, natural finish, spruce top, mahogany sides and back, mahogany laminate inside, fingerboard with dot markers, solid headstock with logo and three-a-side tuners, in shaped, plush-lined Yamaha hardshell case (damaged), with transit labels/stickers,guitar 35 1/2in (90cm) longFootnotes:'I've got an old Bjarton guitar and it's beautiful.'- Rory GallagherRory bought this acoustic guitar in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1967 and used it for recording the song 'Hail' for Taste's debut album in 1969. He said, 'I've got an old Bjarton guitar and it's beautiful. It's a very small guitar like the small Martins. Blind Blake used to use one - it's like a ragtime guitar. The neck joins the body at the 12th fret. I got that in a pawn shop in Denmark in about '67 for about £4. I've been playing that a lot lately, and that's got the light strings - being a small-scale guitar, the light strings don't buzz or anything - it's just right. I used it on the first Taste album and I used to use it on stage. In fact, I was thinking of pulling it out one night and sticking an Ibanez or something on it.' - Rory Gallagher, International Musician, 1977.Literature'Gallagher', International Musician Magazine, April 1977. www.roryon.com/collection.html.Bjärton:Bjärton Musical Instrument Factory was founded in 1946, in Bjärnum, Sweden. Originally the company specialised in double basses, but soon began producing guitars from 1952, until their closure in 1990. In their guitar design, the company focused on producing classical and steel-string acoustic guitars. These instruments are renowned for their high-quality construction, using premium European tonewoods that contribute to their rich sound. Though the company eventually ceased production, Bjärton guitars remain prized by collectors and musicians who appreciate their vintage charm and the legacy of traditional Swedish luthiery. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

It's his acoustic for everything. From Taste onwards, it was all done with this... He loved playing blues on acoustic...' - Daniel Gallagher, 'Rare Guitars', Guitar.comRory purchased this guitar second-hand in London in 1970, and it became his main acoustic guitar throughout his career, for both live and studio performances. '...The thing about a Martin is that it takes about five years to play itself in, it has to develop through a whole lot of things like the heat of the player's body, the atmosphere it's played in and all that. Of course the longer you keep it, the better it gets provided you pay some sort of attention to it...'- Rory Gallagher, Melody Maker, June 1975.The importance of this Martin within Rory's musical practice can be seen in this interview for Guitar Magazine in 1978: 'I get tunes in my head, in taxis and buses and hotels, and jot down a couple of lines. As often as not you're sitting in the dressing room and a riff will come out of the guitar, and then naturally it'll tend to be the Stratocaster, or at home it'll probably be the Martin.'Thus, as well as being a key instrument for both live and studio work, the Martin was sometimes used in more intimate settings, often at home, but nonetheless central to his process of creating music. In 2007, Martin Guitars paid tribute to Rory's use of the D-35, by introducing the limited edition D-35 'Rory Gallagher' model.Live performanceRory Gallagher, 'Out On the Western Plains', Cork Opera House, 4th November 1987, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19hdE2JmBf8.Exhibition'The UK Guitar Show', Olympia, London, UK, 2018.'Born To Rock', National Museum of Ireland in Dublin, Ireland; Harrods, London, UK, 2006-2007.LiteratureBrian Harrigan, 'Grinding the axe, MM's Focus on instruments', Melody Maker, 14 June 1975, www.roryon.com/grinding161.html.John Dalton, 'Rory Gallagher: I try to keep the balance between madness and technique', Guitar, September 1978, www.roryon.com/balance384.html.Josh Gardner, 'Rare Guitars, Rory Gallagher battered 1968 Martin D-35', 4 June, 2019, Guitar.com.Martin Guitars:The Martin D-35 is arguably the most esteemed model in the Martin guitar line-up. Introduced in 1965, the D-35 was developed in response to the growing demand for a dreadnought with a more pronounced bass response and a unique aesthetic. It features a three-piece back, made from high-quality rosewood, which not only enhances its visual appeal but also contributes to its deep, resonant sound. The D-35's tone is characterised by a warm, powerful low end, balanced with clear mids and sparkling highs, making it a favourite among singer-songwriters, bluegrass players, and folk musicians. Over the years, the D-35 has become synonymous with Martin's legacy of producing guitars that blend tradition with innovation, offering players an instrument that is both visually striking and sonically versatile. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
Rory Gallagher: An Eccleshall Custom-Made Electric Guitar,1970s, Serial no. A198 on four-screw neckplate, natural finish, bound top, two pickups with two controls, selector and switch, six-saddle bridge, extended black/white pickguard, solid mahogany back and sides, scarf joint, bound neck with Indian rosewood fingerboard, snowflake markers, bound headstock with black veneer, logo and six-in-line Kluson Deluxe tuners, in shaped, plush-lined hardshell case with a Rory Gallagher Leeds Univents Backstage Pass for 4th October (1980),guitar 39 1/2in (100cm) longFootnotes:Luthier Chris Eccleshall (1948-2020) was Rory's favoured guitar technician throughout the 1970s and 80s. With a career spanning over three decades, Eccleshall established himself as a master of his craft, by combining traditional luthiery techniques with innovative design approaches. Eccleshall's deep understanding of tone and acoustics allowed him to produce guitars that stood out in both studio recordings and live performances, so it was no surprise that Rory trusted him to take care of his beloved and battered trademark Fender Stratocaster (See lot 62). Over the years, Eccleshall worked on the famous Strat at least 15 times to help maintain and enhance its performance. This included a re-fret and a neck change, as well as modifications such as disabling the Strat's vibrato mechanism using a wooden block, (a modification he later also applied to Eric Clapton's 'Blackie')Aside from his work on Rory's 1961 Strat, Eccleshall also created some custom guitars for Rory that complimented his musical style and sound, see lots 57-61.His innovative designs, coupled with his reputation for quality, made Eccleshall a sought-after figure in the guitar-making world and his clientele outside of Rory included Pete Townshend, David Bowie, Peter Hook, and Mark Knopfler among many others.'Somewhere in the very early '70s, Rory and Chris connected... It meant so much to my brother that another craftsman could appreciate his guitar-craft and comprehend the fine detail Rory required. Key to Rory's search was the 'true' amplification of his acoustic instruments, in particular, when endeavouring to have his Italian mandolin playing 'Goin' To My Hometown' (See lot 2). At first played through a microphone, the mandolin was competing with the hand-clapping and foot-stomping fans tattooing out the underlying rhythm of the ballad leading to the maxed-out microphone squealing with feedback. So Chris produced a solid, electric mandolin for Rory – a first of its kind, this allowed my brother to be more ambitious in both his stage and studio use of the instrument. The standardised limitation of 1970s guitar electronics and woodcraft saw Rory commission Chris to construct further instruments incorporating my brother's ideals, a fan of the Telecaster body many were moulded into that fashion.'- Dónal Gallagher. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
