A Victorian silver christening set, comprising mug with swirling gadrooned belly, and gilt interior, napkin ring, fork, spoon and knife with weighted pistol handle, all monogram engraved, total weight 9.52toz without knife, Walter & John Barnard, London 1895, in original silk and velvet fitted case from William Angus and Sons, of Liverpool. Slight variance in years though a seqeuntial run of years from Q-R.

A pair of Royal Windsor fine bone china mugs, each featuring detailed depictions of medieval knights in full armor on horseback. One mug portrays John de Warenne, Earl of Surrey and Sussex (1286-1347), adorned in blue and gold checkered armor, while the other showcases Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick (b. 1345), wearing red and gold heraldic armor. AN IMPORTANT LOWESTOFT INSCRIBED MUG, DATED 1790. Of cylindrical form but very slightly spreading towards the unusual and heavily turned foot, a fine line turned just below the exterior rim, the scrolled handle with thumbrest, inscribed in red 'Will.m Bobbet/ May 10th/ 1790' within a shield-shaped cartouche outlined in puce and flanked with scrolls and flowers, two Curtis-style sprigs to either side, a 'loop and arrow' border in red inside the rim, 11.9cm high J. Howell collection no. L.564 Provenance- Ex. Geoffrey Godden Collection and Ex. Brian Wood Collection. Purchased Bonhams, Fine Glass and British Ceramics, June 2019, lot 200, £6,062 inc. premium. Notes- Illustrated by Geoffrey Godden, Lowestoft Porcelains (1985). p.172, pl.211. Another mug painted by the same hand and bearing the same date is shown at pl.212 but is of the more standard form with a plain foot. The turned foot is an extremely rare feature. The mug is also included by Godden in his list of dated Lowestoft porcelain on page 232, D.150. *CR Two chips to rim, fine crack to the top of the thumb rest, small chips to foot.

A RARE ARMORIAL LOWESTOFT MUG, CIRCA 1770. The bell-shaped body decorated in underglaze blue with the arms of Carysfort of Normans Cross, within a rococo scroll and crowned cartouche, 11.5cm high, 13cm wide across handle. Norwich Castle Museum has a coffee pot with similar decoration (S. Smith Lowestoft Porcelain in the NCM) vol 1 page 110, item 122. It appears that both these pieces with this decoration were made for John Proby of Normans Cross Huntingdonshire who died in 1772. J. Howell collection no. L.433 Provenance- DM. Thomas Atwood MP: a cylindrical pearlware mug printed in blue with a named profile flanked by floral sprays inscribed ‘Union is Strength’, circa 1832, 117mm(commemorative, pottery, political, parliament, election).* Atwood founded the Birmingham Political Union, with the intention of political reform its first meeting was held January 1830.Adopting law abiding and non-violent tactics he had the respect of Parliament during the period of ‘The Days in May’ 1832, a period of social unrest and political tension.He subsequently represented Birmingham as a Radical from 1832 to 1840.
Admiral Rodney: a creamware mug painted in colours with an inscribed portrait, circa 1780, 123mm, cracked(commemorative, pottery, naval, military, war).* Born in 1718 Rodney first went to sea at the age of 14.By the 1740s he had accumulated substantial prize money.From 1751 until 1782 he variously represented seats in Parliament culminating in Westminster.He played a significant part in the American Wars of Independence, was victorious against the Spanish in 1780 at the Battle of Cape Saint Vincent and again in 1782 at the Battle of the Saintes.See Drakard, plate 422.

Drew, dated on the underside, 99mm, hairline crack to rim and some scratching to the interior(commemorative, pottery, naval, military, war).* The British sloop ‘Pylades’ was launched in 1794.She had various Commanders and saw action including in the Mediterranean.She was sold in 1815.

Queen Charlotte: a particularly rare Worcester baluster shaped mug of small size printed en-grisaille with a most unusual half-length portrait looking down and slightly to sinister dressed in an elaborately jeweled costume, flanked by a scrolling ribbon inscribed ‘Charlotte Queen of Great Britain’, circa 1762, 85mm(commemorative, pottery, royal, royalty, coronation).* This depiction of Charlotte is a mirror image of the portrait by Thomas Frye, a mezzotint of which was published in 1762 (see National Portrait Gallery: NPG D9089).A pair of Worcester mugs of George III and Charlotte, depicted as on this mug, was sold a Sotheby’s in London on 4th May 2017 as lot 205.See also a mug, printed in rouge-de-fer with the original mezzotint version, in the Victoria & Albert Museum, accession number C.50-1938.It is quite possible that both versions were engraved by Thomas Billinge.

Marshal Michel Ney: a small pottery mug, the trumpet shaped body coloured brown and moulded with a white profile, with indistinct impressed mark to the underside, circa 1815, 66mm(commemorative, pottery, naval, military, war).* Ney, 1st Price of Moskowa and 1st Duke of Elchingen was a Marshall of the French Empire who fought in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.Defeated at Waterloo he was executed by the restored French Monarchy on 7th December 1815.
Lloyd George: a pottery mug printed in brown with a cow and inscribed in Gaelic, circa 1913, 83mm and a Cartlidge portrait tile (2)(commemorative, pottery, political, parliament, election).* Much to the embarrassment of the authorities a riot developed in Turrif Market Square, Aberdeenshire when the Sherriff's officers tried to auction a cow having previously seized it from Robert Patterson for non-payment of the widely loathed National Insurance contributions, recently introduced by Lloyd George.In the event the cow was purchased with local support and returned to Patterson.
