Exacta & Accurata Delineatio cum Orarum Maritimarum tum Etiam Locorum Terrestrium quae in Regionibus China, Cauchinchina, Camboja sive Champa, Syao, Malacca, Arracan & Pegu... This influential map was the first published map of the Far East to be derived from Portuguese sources. Thus it is credited with breaking the Portuguese monopoly on the East Indian trade and was among the most important sources of information on Southeast Asia during the sixteenth century. The map is oriented with north to the left by two gorgeous compass roses. While based primarily on Portuguese portolan charts, Linschoten also drew on the cartographic work of Plancius. Southeast Asia and Japan are based on the cartography of Fernão Vaz Dourado, and China on the map of Barbuda. The Philippines is drawn from de Lasso with the curious orientation of Palawan. In other regions, Linschoten draws upon the reports of Marco Polo, most notably for the location of the mythical land of Beach provincia auriferain the region where Australia would eventually be discovered. On the mainland, the course of the Mekong is placed too far west, significantly distorting the region and four large lakes in the interior are based on Chinese legend. Corea is shown as a large circular island. The map was beautifully engraved by Langren and is richly adorned with sea monsters and sailing vessels, along with a number of animals in the interior of China. Issued folding, now pressed, on watermarked paper with some areas of printer`s ink residue. 20.8"" W x 15.4"" H . Linschoten/Langren, 1596
Historical Documents1657 "an act for the setling of the postage of england scotland and ireland at the Parliament at Westminster the 17th Day of September, Anno Domini 1656", printed in London by Henry Hills and John Field. This is the first act of parliament relating to the erecting and setling of one General Post Office for the speedy conveying, carrying and re-carrying of letters by post to and from all places within England, Scotland and Ireland and into several parts beyond the seas. Be it enacted by His Highness the Lord Protector and the Parliament, that from henceforth there be one General Office, to be called, and known by the name of the Post-Office of England: and one officer under the name and stile of Postmaster General of England, and Comptroller of the Post-Office. Also setting out the rates of postage. This document had been bound in a book and is virtually separated into single pages, there is a worm hole towards the upper right which runs through all pages, and some minor buckling at right. A rare and important document which established the Post Office for the carriage of mails. Photo The origins of the Post Office date from 1635 when King Charles I opened the Royal Post to the public. This was conceived as a way of generating extra revenue for a service which was already in operation. However, the civil war between the royalists and the parliamentarians effectively closed the post for the public. It was not until 1652, after the battle of Worcester had ended and Charles II had fled to the continent, that parliament felt able to reopen the post to the general public. This, the first postage act, confirmed the right of the new position of Postmaster General to carry letters, establish rates and supply horses on the post roads. This act also established the Post Office monopoly for the carriage of lettersSubject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. For more information please view Terms and Conditions for Buyers.

South Seas Captain John Clipperton certificate for one share in the expedition of the ships `Success` and `Speedwell` 18th June 1720 no.433 signed by Alexander Strachan E. Hughes Andrew Drummond and R. Winder as managers and directors scrollwork at left black printing some tears at folds but professionally rebacked and repaired fine and very rare. Only 2 known. Interestingly the share was issued sixteen months after the expedition had sailed presumably one of the original shareholders wishing to spread his risks by selling on a rising market - South Sea Company stock was bubbling at 750 and would peak at 1050 six days later. At the end of May Speedwell had been wrecked and its captain and crew marooned for five months but the dealers in London could not have known that when this share was traded.Clipperton was born in Great Yarmouth in 1676 and made a career in piracy. In 1704 he joined the pirate/explorer/naturalist/diarist William Dampier but fell out with him and abandoned him off the South American coast. In 1718 a consortium put together the plan to send two vessels around the globe to explore trade and plunder any Spanish ships and settlements they came across. Had the country not been at war this would have been a breach of the South Sea Company`s monopoly. Initially a former Royal Navy officer George Shelvocke on the Speedwell was to be in overall command but before they sailed in February 1719 Clipperton captain of the Success was put in charge and Shelvocke`s anger led to problems with the voyage. The ships were soon separated in the Atlantic and only met again briefly in the Pacific off Mexico. Both captains took many prizes and made their separate ways across the Pacific to China and the East Indies losing their ships and switching to prize vessels en route. Clipperton eventually returned to his family in Galway in Ireland in June 1722 but died within a week from the privations of his 3½-year journey. Shelvocke reached Dover a month later and was arrested for allegedly hiding some of his prizes from the shareholders but managed to do a deal with them. The next year he published A Voyage Round the World by Way of the Great South Sea said to have inspired Coleridge to write The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. He lived on to 1742 his tombstone saying he was "a gentleman of great abilities in his profession". Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium.
