Lucie Rie (1902-1995, Austrian/British) Stoneware composite vase (circa 1979) Of compressed globular form, with tall neck and flared rim, in a spiralling olive green and beige pitted glaze, LR seal mark, 25.5cm high From the collection of the late Maurice Costley Lucie Rie (1902-1995) was born in Vienna and developed an interest in the decorative arts from a young age, studying under the Head of Ceramics, Michael Powolny, at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule. She later opened her own studio, to great acclaim, becoming a much sought-after ceramicist, exhibiting at the Paris International Exhibition in 1925 and wining a gold medal at the Brussels International Exhibition in 1935. She initially created glass and ceramic buttons for the Orplid Glass Studio, although she is most well-known for her collaborations with Hans Coper (1920-1981), a German émigré, whom she hired as a studio assistant in 1946. The partnership was a fruitful one; Coper was a huge inspiration for Rie, championing her experimentation and love of modernism. She continued to experiment with glazes, enamel colours and forms throughout her long career. Provenance Acquired from Peter Dingley Gallery, Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom, with paper label. Condition ReportOverall in good order. The upper rim is undulating and the globular shape is somewhat uneven in potting. There are some remnants of what is probably glaze to the underside of the foot, visible under UV, although the footrim surface is solid and does not appear to have been restored. The provenance label is faded and worn.

A PAIR OF TURKISH ÇANAKKALE-STYLE POLYCHROME-PAINTED AND GILT ZSOLNAY POTTERY EWERS Zsolnay manufacture, Pécs, Hungary, ex-Ottoman Western Provinces, ca. 1878 - 1900Each of typical pyriform shape, resting on a short, circular foot, rising to a long, tapering neck surmounted by a bulbous head designed in the shape of a mythical creature with short horns, bulging eyes and an everted beak-like spout, to the side of each ewer a rope-twisted handle, the exterior painted in cobalt blue, manganese purple, sage green, and teal with golden highlights against a milky white ground, the ewer's design typical of Turkish Çanakkale creations whilst the decoration and the palette reminiscent of Ottoman Iznik and Damascus ceramics, consisting of lush floral arrangements with serrated saz leaves, prunus blossom branches, rosette scrolls, and large lotus flower sprays, the front of each ewer further embellished with applied moulded floral roundels, and the handle decorated with alternating blue and purple beaded bands, each base presenting the ZSOLNAY PÉCS mark with the "Five Churches and Family Initials", as well as the production form numbers of this series (stamped '753' ZV Pécs and '6', and painted '22').each approximately 36cm high In 1853, the Zsolnay factory was established by Miklós Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary. In 1865, his son Vilmos Zsolnay joined the company and became its manager and director, spearheading the rapid and remarkable success of this manufacture at international exhibitions and art fairs all around the world. The factory mark on the base of our ewers was designed by Júlia Sikorski, Vilmos' daughter, possibly for the factory's debut at the 1878 Paris Exhibition, where the Zsolnay factory was eventually awarded a gold medal. For the design, Julia was inspired by the Medieval name of her family's hometown, Pécs, which meant "Five Churches". To the right of the mark, one can read the initials T.J.M. standing for Térez, Júlia and Miklós, the first names' initials of the three children of Vilmos, heavily involved in the running of the factory at that time. This mark remained in use from 1878 until 1900 and is usually accompanied by the production form numbers, indicating the date of the original release of the piece. Interestingly, another Çanakkale-style Zsolnay pottery ewer recently sold at auction in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire (Potteries Auction, 7 March 2024, lot 322) presents the same form numbers of our pair ('753' Z. V. PECS), suggesting they were all most probably part of a special series inspired by Turkish Çanakkale creations. each approximately 36cm high Qty: 2

A QUEEN ELIZABETH II CORONATION CHAIR, 1953, produced by North & Sons, West Wycombe, numbered 31, covered with blue velvet bearing the monogram ER II beneath a crown, stamped and branded to the underside, one corner block stamped "P.S" beneath a crown, 85cm high x 49.5cm x 43cm deep, Provenance: Sir Horace Holmes (1888-1971) and thence by descentBorn in Weston, Notts., Holmes received an elementary education before becoming a coal miner. During World War I, he served as a sergeant in the Leeds Rifles, and received the Distinguished Conduct Medal. After the war, he returned to mining, and from 1923 was secretary of his branch of the Yorkshire Miners' Association. From 1923 until 1946, he also served on Royston Urban District Council, and for eleven years, he additionally served on the West Riding County Council. Sponsored by his union, Holmes was elected unopposed as Member of Parliament for Hemsworth at a by-election in 1946 following the death of the sitting MP George Griffiths. Holmes held the seat at the next three general elections, each time with the largest Labour majority in the election. From 1947 until 1951, he was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the successive Ministers of Fuel and Power, Hugh Gaitskell and Philip Noel-Baker. He then became the Labour Whip for the Yorkshire members. Holmes stood down at the 1959 general election. He was knighted in 1966, and died in 1971. Sir Horace Holmes attended The Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II along with his wife Lady Nellie Holmes, in seat numbers 31 and 375 respectively. Lady Nellie Holmes's chair is offered in the following lot (260). The Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was held on 2nd June 1953 at Westminster Abbey. The ceremony was a very large celebration with several thousand distinguished guests in attendance. The numbers of guests were fewer than George VI coronation, due to the reduction in seating behind the alter. Planning for such an important event took over 12 months. The design of the chairs and stools produced for the ceremony was taken from those created for the King George VI Coronation in 1937. The Ministry of Works were responsible for commissioning all furnishings for the coronation. As had been the case for George VI coronation furniture manufacturers based in High Wycombe, the centre of English chair making during this period, produced all of the chairs and stools. A range of companies manufactured the furniture including; B. North & Sons; W. Hands & Sons; Thomas Glenister Ltd.; Castle Bros. (all firms in High Wycombe); Maple & Co., and Waring & Gillow. The blue velvet coverings were made at Listers Mills in Bradford, Yorkshire.

Literature: There is a lack of documented information about Donald Grey, but by family repute, Donald, or Johnny as he was known, was walking down the street circa 1916/7 when a stranger gave him a white feather. Although he was only sixteen he looked older and this affront caused him to try to sign up, however the only service that would take on a sixteen year old was the Royal Marines. He joined up initially for hostilities only but fell in love with the Marines and received his commission and stayed on, with one of his postings being Hong Kong. At the outbreak of war, he was seconded to Vickers Armstrong and worked with R.J. Mitchell to conceive the Grey and Mitchell bombs, as well as working on desalination units for submarines.Sadly Johnny met with a premature end - whilst riding his motorbike to a demonstration of one of his new designs, he hit a rope across the road that was supposed to warn of an unexploded bomb up ahead, but the sign had fallen off. He was badly injured, sent to a plastic surgery hospital where he was given the wrong blood group and he died of pneumonia late in 1944.Johnny left behind his wife, two young children and an unborn baby.
