Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Boy w/ Toy Locomotive" Signed lower left. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the United States 29c Toy Locomotive Self-adhesive stamp issued October 28, 1992. The quest begins in early fall. Children cozily ensconced with grandparents, Mom and Dad scout discount emporiums and toy stores in search of the perfect toy train set. Their purchase made, they sneak surreptitiously into the house and lug cumbersome packages down to the basement, a makeshift assembly plant for the next several months. A plywood base is carefully constructed and covered with material simulating the color and texture of grass. Soon rails are attached; crossing signs and station houses go up. If Mom and Dad have been duly industrious, the present is ready for action by Christmas morning. Toy train sets have captivated the hearts and imaginations of children the world over since the first steam locomotive chugged its way into transportation history. First produced in the late 1880s, toy trains were manufactured in large quantities over the next several decades by American companies such as Lionel Corporation, Louis Marx and Company, American Flyer Manufacturing Company and Ives Corporation. As real railroad technology advanced, toy trains became more lifelike, and many aficionados responded by creating elaborate surroundings for their sets. One collector's Lionel model 390E Blue Comet made its way around a diorama which included replicas of New York City's Hell's Gate Bridge and Philadelphia's Independence Hall. A toy locomotive takes center stage in this artwork. Image Size: 12.25 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 19 in. Unframed. (B14020)
