A fine late-Regency pietra dura and specimen marble table by Joseph Darmanin of Malta and George Morant of New Bond Street - c.1835, the circular top inlaid in various marbles with the Doves of Pliny, within a striking white marble border inlaid with anthemion and scrolling foliage, signed to the border 'Darmanin Malta', the English giltwood and gesso tripod base in the baroque taste, the underside of the top stamped 'G Morant 91 New Bond Street', 74cm diameter, 75cm high, the top and base in very original condition and apparently unrestored. * Guiseppe (anglicised as Joseph) Darmanin established his business in the early years of the 19th century and by the early 1830s was partnered by his sons, the firm catering to the wealthy British travellers on the Grand Tour. By the year 1851, the firm has established such a fine reputation for their workmanship that they were asked to represent the island of Malta at the Great Exhibition in London, where they were awarded an 'Honourable Mention' by the judges. Examples of their work were included in many major collections, including the Royal Collection and the Victoria and Albert Museum. ** George Morant was an interior decorator, cabinet maker, carver and gilder of some renown, who was active between 1790 and 1850. His earliest recorded bill heads base him at 88 New Bond Street during George IV's reign, the firm receiving royal patronage in 1827-28, when they supplied picture frames for Windsor Castle. By 1842 he is recorded at 91 New Bond Street, where he was located until at least 1850.

A mid Victorian ormolu mounted walnut pietra dura top centre table of rectangular form, the top decorated with an arrangement of specimen marbles, mostly in geometric forms but including stylised fleur de lys, on turned tapered legs with H stretcher, 112cm wide, 60cm deep, 73cm high Overall in fair but slightly neglected condition, in the main the walnut is of a good rich brown tone, ormolu looks complete but now starting to oxidise to a dull finish, central pietra dura with a few small losses near the corners but otherwise looking good, underframe dirty and faded with one lower leg in particular heavily bleached and wormed, quite probably was raised on ormolu feet or castors in the past.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. He used the anglicised Joseph (J) Darmanin to cater for the steady flow of British Grand Tourists heading to North Africa, the Levant and India. By 1851, the firm's reputation was so well established that they represented Malta at the Great Exhibition where they were awarded an 'Honourable Mention' in the judges report for the excellence of their workmanship.
