This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by a search certificate number no.12519-231946.The Greek deity Artemis was the goddess of hunting, associated with wild animals and woodland as well as childbirth. She was often linked with folk magic and witchcraft due to her role as goddess of the moon. She was identified by the Romans with the goddess Diana. Artemis was born, with her twin brother Apollo, on the island of Delos, daughter of Zeus and Leto. Homer refers to her as Artemis Agrotera, Potnia Theron: Artemis of the wildland, Mistress of Animals. Her best-known cult sites were on the island of Delos, in Attica at Brauron and Mounikhia, and in Sparta. She was often depicted in paintings and statues in a forest setting, carrying a bow and arrows, and accompanied by a deer. In Greek classical art, she is usually portrayed as a maiden huntress: young, tall and slim, clothed in a girl's short skirt, with hunting boots, a quiver, a bow and arrows. When portrayed as a moon goddess, Artemis wore a long robe and sometimes a veil covering her head. Her darker side is revealed in some vase paintings, where she is shown as the death-bringing goddess whose arrows fell young maidens and women, such as the daughters of Niobe. Artemis was also identified with the ancient mother goddess at Ephesus in modern-day Turkey and it was there that a huge temple was built in her honour, long recognised as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

This type of amulet was intended to aid childbirth and avoid illness and dangers for its attendant.
A Fiji tapa cloth, 1940 or earlier, with dedication to John Miller on his 60th birthday, height 134 x 42.5cm. Original letter was placed inside the rear of the frame. Tapa cloth, made from the bark of trees and traditionally used by many Pacific Island cultures, is often prized for its intricate patterns and symbolic meaning. This particular piece was purchased in Fiji in 1940, during a pivotal time in history, as World War II was underway. It was gifted to Cornish artist John Miller on his 60th birthday by Tommy and Tean Craske-Rising, a couple with a fascinating history of their own. Tommy was a former headteacher at Penzance Boys Grammar School, and the couple shared a personal connection with Miller, who was a beloved artist in Cornwall. The provenance of the cloth adds to its mystique, as the accompanying letter conveys an extraordinary tale of survival and gratitude. The letter recounts the journey the cloth made during the Second World War, from Fiji across the Pacific Ocean and then through the Atlantic, following the perilous convoy journey where Tommy and Tean were miraculously spared from the convoy being wiped out. The letter reflects the belief that the cloth carried some sort of protective magic, preserving the lives of those who carried it. The Tapa cloth’s journey, with the letter conveying this story, becomes a precious artifact of not just artistic and cultural value, but also of historical importance, especially with the tie-in to wartime survival and the bond it represents between the artist and the Craske-Rising family. This gift, imbued with the luck and wishes of the couple, stands as a meaningful gesture for John Miller and continues to serve as a reminder of the intertwined histories and experiences of the people who gifted and received it.

TCG cards could have a moderate defect or a number of small handling defects. This variation is distinct from the others on two grounds: 1) The 1st edition circular stamp on the left-hand side of the card is clearly visible, and 2) A shadowless card has a different colour pallet than its unlimited counterpart. The official terminology is what’s known as missing the ‘drop shadow’ on the card, specifically around the art box but the best way to describe it is it kind of looks like the entire card is sun damaged/bleach.
