Lot 97

Ca. 1100 - 900 BC. A bronze dagger made using the lost wax casting technique. It has a slender blade with a high midrib and a polygonal guard, all below a wavy and flanged hilt. The blade was cast with the handle. The lip surrounding the handle would have held an inlay made from bone, wood, or some other perishable material to create a full grip. Ca. 350 - 320 BC. A red-figure pottery bell krater with a large body, short splayed foot, a flanged mouth and two well-preserved horizontal handles. The krater features traditional patterns, such as the geometric motif under the lip and a wave pattern along the bottom of the body. Side A is decorated with a standing maenad holding a large pixys in her right hand and a wreath in her left. Side B is decorated with a lady of fashion facing left wearing a large sakkos embellished with pearls and a necklace. Completely black beneath the handles. Ca. 340 - 310 BC. A red-figure pottery bell krater with a large body, short splayed foot, a flanged mouth and two well-preserved horizontal handles. The krater features traditional patterns such as a laurel wreath under the lip and a wave pattern along the bottom of the body. Side A is decorated with a standing Nike with outstretched wings with natural details. whio is wearing a himation on her left arm and holding a trident in her right hand. Side B is decorated with a standing lady of fashion wearing a long cloak and himation and a large and high diadem. The handles are surrounded by a large palmette motif. The vessel is probably made by a member of the Menzies Painter Group. Size: 295mm x 285mm; Weight: 2.7kg Provenance: Private UK collection, acquired on the Dutch art market; previously acquired on the Belgian art market; Peter van der Elst, Liege, 1987. The krater features traditional patterns, such as the laurel wreath under the lip, and the meander pattern along the bottom of the body. Side A is decorated with a standing naked Nike resting on top of a column with ionic capital, with outstretched wings, embellished with pearls and holding a large mirror in her right hand. In front of her, a seated noblewoman wearing a long chiton, holding in her left a large case. Side B is decorated with two standing men around a column-shaped altar decorated on the top. They each wear a long cloak and a diadem. The handles are surrounded by a large palmette motif. New Kingdom, Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC. A tall bottle made from green/blue glass, its elegant silhouette exhibits a rounded shoulder above the carinated body and a narrowing neck surmounted by an everted lip. The glass surfaces showcase impressive lustre and smooth textures, given their age. Around the larger part of the body, a decoration comprised of diagonal lines alternating white and black and a wave white and yellow pattern adorned the neck. OF NAPOLEONIC INTEREST, AN ITALIAN CARVED WHITE MARBLE ROYAL ARMORIAL PEDESTAL IN THE MANNER OF LORENZO BARTOLINI, EARLY 19TH CENTURY Decorated to the front with the arms of Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814) used during the reign of Napoleon as King of Italy 113.5cm high, the top 38cm square, the base 42cm square These arms relate to the Kingdom of Italy, a client state of Napoleon's French Empire established in Italy in 1805 with Napoleon established as its King, and his stepson Eugène de Beauharnais as his viceroy. This pedestal is a rare survivor of a brief tenure of Royalty lasting just 9 years The attribution is based upon a pair of pedestals commissioned by Thomas Thynne, 5th Viscount Weymouth (1765-1837), son of the Marquis of Bath of Longleat, in Florence from Lorenzo Bartolini (1777-1850) formerly with Thomas Coulborn & Sons. Lot 122

A 19th century Rockingham style desk stand, with two inkwells and candle holder. Length 40 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The main stand is in very good condition with no chips, no damage, no repairs and no restoration. There is some minor rubbing to the gilding at the extremities. Inkwell 1 is structurally in good order with no issues to the base. The interior has sparse glazing and missing glazing. The lid has a faint hairline crack running from the centre of the lid to the edge. Inkwell 2 has more pronounced interior glaze losses and a missing section around the inner lip. The lid is in good condition. Both inkwells have losses to the gilding. The taper stick holder is in generally good order with only minor losses to the gilding and a glaze firing mark to the inside of the sconce.

Lot 160

Warren MacKenzie (1924-2018), a studio pottery bowl, with impressed mark to the underside. Height 9 cm, lid diameter 19 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The bowl is in generally very good order with no chips, no damage, no repairs and no restoration. There is a small glaze firing mark to the top lip and other minor firing marks to the interior. There is no evidence of any crazing. The interior of the bowl has some minor liquid marks and is a little scratched but not significantly so to the centre.

Lot 18

A pair of late 19th century Chinese lidded bottle shaped vases, with blue decoration and gilded overlay. Height 48 cm and 38 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: One vase has a faint hairline crack running from the top rim down into the neck for +/- 2 cm vertically and 1 cm horizontally. The remainder of the base of the vase has no issues. There is some minor rubbing to the gilding on the top lip. The vase lid has three significant chips and the knop is also damaged. Vase two also has a hairline crack running from the top lip down into the vase for +/- 4 cm. Other than this and minor rubbing to the gilding the vase itself is in good condition. The lid has a chip to the knop and several chips and nibbles to the bottom rim. There is rubbing and losses to the gilding. Both vases are similar in height. One is 38 cm and the slightly lower one just short of 37 cm. They are to all intents and purposes a pair but do have this slight differentiation in height.

A pair of Victorian circa 1880 red glass vases with gilded overlay, Gothic arch design. Height 37.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both vases have rubbing to the gilding on the top lip and they also both have minor tiny nibbles and chips to this top rim. There are no significant chips and no cracks, no repairs and no restoration. The gilding to the main body of both vases is good. The bases are a little scuffed and marked to the underside but there are no serious issues.

The Great War M.C. group to Major Stanley Cornell Deed, 10th Hussars: Military Cross, George V; 1914-15 Star (LIEUT. S. C. DEED. 10/HRS.); British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (MAJOR S. C. DEED.); 1939-45 Star; France & Germany Star; Defence Medal; War Medal 1939-45; Egypt: the Order of the Nile, 4th Class breast badge; later mounted for display, Nile badge with light enamel damage and loose (rotating) central device, others good very fine. [9] 36mm diameter of round medals M.C. London Gazette 30/03/1916Stanley Cornell Deed was born in London on the 2nd of April 1881, and was educated at Horton Hall, Eastbourne College, and Merton College Oxford. He saw home service with the Berkshire Yeomanry 1899-1902, and subsequently devoted himself to farming in South Africa and Argentina, acquiring a profound knowledge of horses. He returned to England in 1914 and was commissioned in the 2nd King Edward's Horse, before transferring via the 11th Reserve Cavalry to the 10th Hussars in France in May 1915. The action for which he received the M.C. was carried out at the Hog's Back, Vermelles, on the 2nd and 3rd February 1916, and is described in the citation as follows:"For conspicuous gallantry as Bombing Officer in the trenches. When the enemy suddenly and unexpectedly exploded a mine, he forstalled them and occupied the crater, and drove off their bombers. Later, when the enemy had occupied their lip of the crater he led out his bombers again and turned them out."Deed went on to serve as Staff Captain with the 7th and then the 6th Cavalry Brigades. He was in Egypt and Palestine from October 1917, and was Liason Officer to the New Zealand Cavalry Brigade. He was made D.A.A.G. 5th Cavalry Division in Syria and Palestine in May 1918. He was twice mentioned in despatches, including that of General Allenby on the 5th of March 1919. He was honoured with the Order of the Nile (London Gazette 26/11/19) for services to the Egyptian government in connection with horse husbandry.

A Britannia silver champagne goblet by Louis Osman, 1974, of faceted squat gently ovoid form on a square pedestal foot, with hammered finish, hallmarked for Britannia silver, London 1974, with maker’s mark ‘LO’, goblet height 7.8cm. £800-£1,200 Please note ARR may apply to this lot (Artist’s Resale Rights). --- This goblet was originally purchased by James Smith - ‘Uncle James’, a close family friend of the Jenkins and godfather of the three children, Victoria, Claire and Toby. It was one of a set designed by Louis for the Anglo-Swedish exhibition Modern British Silver and Jewels, in 1970. The precious metal refiners Johnson Matthey sponsored the exhibition, donating 500 ounces of silver to The Crafts Centre, London. 13 designers were then allocated 80 ounces each to create works for the exhibition. Louis produced a standing salt, dishes for traditional Swedish fish courses and a selection of goblets. Other exhibitors included Gerald Benney, John Donald, Gerda Flockinger and Tom Scott. The exhibition was shown first at The Crafts Centre of Great Britain, in London (now Contemporary Applied Arts) and then at the Handicrafts Office (Hantverkets lokaler), in Stockholm. Matching champagne and wine goblets are held in the permanent collections of the Goldsmiths’ Company, London. In correspondence Louis makes reference to further whiskey, sherry and schnapps goblets he had made in the same suite. An original pen and watercolour design for similar goblets was sold as part of The Personal Archive of Louis Osman at Noonans on 27 March 2018 (Lot 292). A Britannia silver and enamel ‘Aquarius’ goblet by Louis Osman, 1976, the silver beaker of gently ovoid form, on a cylindrical base, to an undulating skirt foot, engraved all over with a rippling water pattern and with raised collet set seed pearl ‘bubbles’, the cylindrical base applied with a double wave motif highlighted with bright blue enamel, hallmarked for Britannia silver, London 1976, with maker’s mark ‘LO’, height 9cm. £2,000-£3,000 Please note ARR will apply to this lot (Artist’s Resale Rights). --- This cup was commissioned by Mr and Mrs Jenkins for their son Toby, on the occasion of his 21st birthday. The enamelling to the cup was executed by Dilys Osman, Louis’ wife. In a letter to Mrs Jenkins, dated 3 November 1976, Louis says: “Toby’s cup is finished […] and enamelled –– very blue & watery & Aquarian. I have decided that I would like to have the whole outside surface engraved with wave’y watery ‘Aquarian’ lines too by an artist/engraver but didn’t want to exceed the [quotation] without consulting you. Of course if you don’t want the additional cost I fully understand (if you do I would of course be pleased) and if you don’t I would be quite happy to pay the Engraver myself” (3 November 1976).
