Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). Autograph Letter Signed, black ink on three sides of one folded sheet, Royal Station Hotel York letterhead, 24 June 1907, "Dear Curtis [Lionel Curtis (1872-1955), key creator of the idea of Commonwealth], Your letter finds me, in heavy rain under sodden skies, on my way to Durham where tomorrow they propose to make me a Doctor of Letters!...our Colonies though we call them 'nations' are but small outposts inadequately protected in remote places...Preserve your optimism and you'll find it not very far from my pessimism...and do recognise that you are dealing, always, always, always, with the half-breed." Together with another ALS, four sides of one folded sheet, composed by Kipling on a delayed train, "Richmond Road. 7pm of Tuesday night; the train waiting here for six hours (they say) on account of a washaway lower down. Dear Curtis, Do you know that curious emphasised silence when a ship's screw is stopped? We have it here, a whole train-load of us, with remote voices through the partitions and absurd bits of sentences from people walking about. Lord but the Karoo is a scornful thing - to humanity - in a luxurious train - at twilight! We've been out walking for half an hour and made no more impression on the distances than a fly in a treacle-pot.", and an ALS by Carrie Kipling, headed The Woolpack, Rosebank C.C. [Cape Town], "Dear Mr Curtis, I hope you will agree that a blue-brown vase I sent from the Jap shop in Cape Town suits the White House and will give it a resting place in that nice dining room and on occasions put a branch of Cosmos into it. We continue to celebrate the delights of our visit and to wish the North were nearer." (3) Provenance: By descent of Lionel Curtis (1872-1955)
