A Nieuwe Kunst carpet, circa 1920, in 'Dutch Batik' style, together with a matching mat, Rug approximately 310 by 215cm.,. Mat approximately 80 by 45cm Nieuwe Kunst was the Dutch school contemporary with Art Nouveau.. Carpet design during this period was influenced by fabrics and textiles from the former Dutch colony of Indonesia, and is referred to as 'Dutch batik'.. Batik is identifiable by strong geometric patterns, primary colours and repeating motifs.. Jaap Gidding (1887- 1955) was a predominant designer and producer of carpets during the twenties, the Tuschinski Theatre in Amsterdam exemplifying his work: 'his design for the walls and carpets of the theatre are in the Batik style, but also recollect Caucasian dragon carpets of the 18th century', (Day, Susan, Art Deco and Modernist Carpets, Thames and Hudson, London 2002 p75).. The current lot recollects the work of Gidding, with its bold use of clour and symmetrical design. W.

A good series of 18 typed letters signed to Miss Bunny Simmons, 1956 to 1975. The Tunku had been driven by Miss Simmons, a British government driver, during his visit to London in 1955 to negotiate independence for Malaya, and they became good friends. His letter of thanks of 23rd Feb. 1956, after his return to Malaya, a fortnight after the signing of the Independence Treaty in London, has an autograph postscript We never stop talking about you & the extreme cheeriness which you have always got for everyone. It will always remain in my memory, and to you Bunny I say thank you. The Tunku invited Miss Simmons to Malaya to witness the Proclamation of Independence on 31st August 1957. The following letters discuss political matters both home and abroad, and provide personal family insights. His letter of 8th March mentions the opposition of Indonesia to the Federation of Malaysia We are facing a difficult time with Indonesia and we are meeting it courageously and as calmly as possible. In this critical hour of our lives, we are fortunate in having... ... the support of Britain, Australia...[which] has given Sukarno second thoughts before he undertakes any expedition against us....... His letter of 4th June 1969 is written shortly after the race riots We are having a tough time in Malaysia where trouble broke out without any warning... ... violence broke out unprecedented in the history of this country. Within two or three hours nearly 100 people were killed... ... Tension is still high... ... Our friends from abroad have unfortunately exaggerated the incidents and have made monsters of me, Tun Razak and the Malay people... ... the people who really started the trouble were communists... ... the majority of whom happened to come from the Chinese race, and so the Malays took their revenge resulting in the loss of many innocent lives... .... 18 letters, 20-pages 4to or folio, on his official printed letter-heading, a number with autograph postscripts, together with an autograph postcard and a Christmas card.
