A GEORGE I GILTWOOD AND GESSO STOOL OR WINDOW SEAT ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES MOORE, CIRCA 1720 With an early 18th century upholstered drop in seat 44cm high, 83.5cm wide, 45cm deepJames Moore (c1670-1726) was a leading exponent of chased relief gilt gesso furniture, first gaining experience in this specialist technique under the Gumleys. Moore is known to have supplied gilt gesso furniture to amongst others Queen Anne and George I for Kensington Palace; and to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace.The State Bedroom at Houghton Hall, Norfolk has a related giltwood stool.For a somewhat related stool attributed to James Moore, see Christie's, New York, The Collector, 25th April 2024, Lot 629, (£13,860 incl. Lester Piggott signed and worn Charles W. Engelhard Jr. racing silks. 1960s, green body with red and yellow arms, signed in black marker pen, glazed and framed.These silks were from Fulke Johnson Houghton's stables at the Woodway Stables in Blewbury. The most notable Enelhard horses trained by Fulke Johnson Houghton and ridden by Lester Piggott would include the brothers Ribocco, Ribero and Ribofilio. The first two both won the Irish Derby and the St Leger in 1967 and 1968 respectively; whilst Ribofilio won the Champagne Stakes and Dewhurst Stakes in 1968, and was believed to have been ‘got at’ when flopping in the 2,000 Guineas.Other Lester Piggott-ridden Charles Engelhard horses trained at Blewbury include Tin King (Norfolk Stakes & Cornwallis Stakes 1965), Falcon (Norfolk Stakes 1966, Temple Stakes 1967) & Habitat (1969 Wills Mile).These silks have a distinctive square patch repair. A colour portrait press photograph of Lester Piggott, with a file date of 1st July 1968, shows Lester wearing these repaired colours.

Racing plate worn by Batt when winning the 1897 Criterion Stakes at Newmarket,mounted with painted back plate in yellow & black in keeping with the Duke of Westminster’s racing colours, inscribed with the race details, some fading and minor paint loss.Batt was a bay colt foaled in 1895 by Sheen out of Vampire (Galopin) and was owned by the Duke of Westminster. He won 5 races from 8 starts including the Houghton S., Criterion S., Doncaster S. & Great Foal S. The colt also finished second in the Derby behind Jeddah, and also runner-up in the Eclipse Stakes.The Criterion Stakes of this time was an important 2-y-o race at Newmarket and won by some famous horses including Ormonde, Flying Fox, Pretty Polly & Gay Crusader. It should not be confused with the G3 event for older horses run on the July Course since 1978 (known as the Van Geest Stakes for some of that time).

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Laurentis was a French-bred bay colt foaled in 1943 by Deiri out of Laurentia (Salmon Trout).The stayer was owned by Mr H K Frost and trained by at the Woodway Stables in Blewbury, Oxfordshire, by Gordon Johnson Houghton. The colt’s biggest win came in the Jockey Club Cup in 1947.

For further information on Ray Goddard and the collection see lot 144.Habitat was an American-bred bay colt foaled in 1966 by Sir Gaylord out of Little Hut (Occupy). He was bought at the Keeneland Sales by Charles W. Engelhard Jr. and sent to England to be trained by Fulke Johnson Houghton at the Woodway Stables, Blewbury, Oxfordshire.The colt proved a late developer and did not race as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old he made up for lost time recording major wins in the Lockinge Stakes, Prix Quincey, Wills (now the Celebration) Mile and Prix du Moulin.At the end of 1967 he was sold to a syndicate for £400,000 and retired to the Grangewilliam Stud, Co. Kildare and was a great success. His G1 winners included Bassenthwaite, Brocade, Distant Relative, Flying Water, Habat, Habibti, Hittite Glory, Marwell, Rose Bowl, Sigy, Steinlen, Double Form, Smokey Lady and Steel Heart. In addition to this he appears in the pedigree of many other champions as the damsire.

WW2 Ron Houghton DFC 49 sqn bomber command signed stunning 12 x 8 inch colour Lancaster in flight photo. Ron was a Pilot Officer at RAF Pocklington for around six months at the height of the conflict in 1943 and 1944. Bomber Command suffered some of WWII's highest casualty rates; but though they had several close calls Ron and his crew survived the 33 missions they flew from Pocklington. After 30 missions, Bomber Command personnel were able to stand down from active operations. But Ron's love of flying knew no bounds and he promptly switched to flying Spitfires and Hurricanes with Fighter Command, being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in May 1945 for his 'skill and fortitude in operations against the enemy'. He was further honoured in 2014 when he flew to France as one of seven Australian veterans to receive a retrospective Legion d'Honneur from French President Francois Holland. Good condition Est.
