Gordon Mitchell Forsyth, Memorial to Edith Cavell, Goddess Caritas under the banner "Patriotism Is Not Enough I Must Be Free From All Hatred And Bitterness", oil on oak panel, signed and dated 1916, the back inscribed "This Memorial was subscribed to by the inhabitants of Shoreditch and the past and present nursing staff and friends in the Shoreditch Infirmary in the year AD1916 the third year of the Great War and unveiled on the first anniversary of Miss Cavell's death. Footnote:Gordon Mitchell Forsyth (1879-1952) attended the Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen, followed by the Royal College of Art, London, before establishing a career in the ceramic industry in the early 20th century. He held the position of Art Director for the Minton Hollins Tile Co in 1903, and soon after Art Director for Pilkington's Tile and Pottery factory. It was here that arguably his greatest artistic ceramic designs were executed where the influence of the Pre-Raphaelites was strongly embraced. As with many young artists of his generation, Forsyth served in the Great War, before returning to Staffordshire and the ceramic heart of Britain in 1920, where he held the title of Superintendent of Art Instruction in Stoke-on-Trent and oversaw ceramic design to many notable students. Edith Cavell was a British Nurse who was celebrated for treating wounded soldiers from both sides without discrimination during the First World War. Cavell helped around 200 Allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium before being court-marshalled under German Military Law and executed by firing squad on 12th October, 1915. During her career before WWI Edith Cavell was Assistant Matron at Shoreditch Infirmary from 1903-1906.

A Minton Hollins & Co. sang de boeuf egg-shaped vase, 13.5 cm high, a Denby turquoise glazed egg-shaped vase, 15.5 cm high, a Vienna Pergamon floral and foliate decorated vase, 20.5 cm high and a lustre ribbon glazed vase bearing blue glazed marks to base "NB-A-MCA", 22 cm high CONDITION REPORTS The sang de boeuf vase has a chip to the outside edge of the rim as well as several large surface scratches to the piece throughout. There is crazing evident throughout. The Denby vase has all over crazing. The Vienna vase has some wear to the glaze as though it has thumb prints or suchlike put on it during firing. Also has some heavier scratches throughout but mainly to the neck. The lustre vase has firing faults to the glaze and body throughout in a sort of dimpled effect. Has crazing. The interior is very dirty, appears to have been used for flowers or suchlike. There are marks in the dust and scratches to the base. All items are in need of a good clean and have general wear and tear to include some light surface scratches as well as minor firing faults etc - see images for more details

India General Service 1854-95 medal, 1 clasp, Burma 1885-7, renamed in Royal Navy/Royal Marines style impressed capital serifs to "2028. L/SERGT A.L. HOLLINS CHESHIRE REG'T" Absalom Lawton Hollins 2nd Battalion Cheshire Regiment confirmed on medal rolls for Burma 1887-9 but not 1885-7, so the clasp is incorrect. Born in Silverdale, Cheshire. Joined in August, 1885.Also served in the Boer War and the First World War - numerous service numbers on record cards: Wr/326948, 228557, Se/9567, 5529, 2028, 80925/C, 1466. Died October, 1943.

A 19th Century Minton Hollins & Co 8 inch dust pressed tile in the Gothic Revival style with a central roundel with repeat foliate borders, picked out in majolica glaze, relief moulded marks, together with a similar smaller Minton & Co example and a further similar plastic clay example attributed to Frederick Garrard. A later 19th Century Copeland plastic clay 8 inch tile, circa 1878, decorated with four panels of flowers between zig zag borders, stamped mark, together with three dust pressed 8 inch tiles, a Minton Hollins & Co tile with a stylised flower in the manner of Dr Christopher Dresser, another Minton tile with a panel of naturalistic leaves between borders, and a Steele and Wood tile with stylised flowers and leaves.
