Lot 49

A scarce yellow metal mounted circular 1914 Birmingham Battalion pendant, with enamel decoration to the front side, and the reverse with portrait of a soldier from the Royal Warwickshire (Birmingham Pals Battalion) Regiment. Indistinctly marked to the outer edge of the frame, but believed to read as ‘375’, which indicates 9ct gold. The base metal appears to be rose gold, with a higher karat gold plating over the surface. Approximately 2.5cm across, and 4cm top to bottom (including suspension loop). Together with a hallmarked silver and enamel Allied Nations flags badge, showing the flags of UK (though the badge says ‘England’), France, Russian and Belgium. Fully hallmarked to the reverse side for Birmingham 1914, and manufactured by the famous Liberty & Co silversmith, William Hair Haseler. Approximately 2.4cm across. Notes: the Birmingham Pals were 3 infantry battalions raised in September 1914, comprising of volunteers as part of Kitcheners new armies. They became the 14th, 15th, and 16th Service Battalions of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment (with Birmingham historically being part of Warwickshire), and were deployed to the Western Front in November 1915. The yellow metal pendant has utilised the button hole or lapel badge issued to the 3 service battalions, which would have been worn by men in civilian clothes while they were waiting for uniforms to arrive. Condition: very good to both items. Good enamels to each piece, with no apparent dents or splits to the metal.

A fine quality, cased 1927 dated Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society Swimming Medal. Made in fully hallmarked sterling silver, with the date letter for Birmingham 1927, and the makers mark for Liberty silversmith, William Hair Haseler. With a swivel stylised dolphin suspension and silver pin clasp. Hand engraved to the reverse side, stating that it was awarded to Ernest West by the Banks Road Council School, Garston, and the date of 27/10/27. Notes: the award wasn’t made for life saving, but for proficiency in swimming exercises with the view to saving lives. Complete with original fitted case. Also, an 1889 dated cased bronze medallion by William Wyon, awarded by the Presbyterian Church of England. Engraved to the reverse side for ‘Peter Whitwell Senior Division 1889’. 2 items. Condition: generally very good to each. Both medals are in good order, with both having a good colour and patina. A little wear to the exterior of the fitted cases on each example, which is more prominent on the bronze Wyon medal (the case will not stay closed).
