1931 Aston Martin 1½-Litre Le Mans / International 'Team Car' 2/4 Seater Sports Tourer Coachwork by Bertelli Registration no. JO 3999 Chassis no. J1/111•One of only four Le Mans 'Team Car' replicas•Unique coachwork•In-period Brooklands race history•First purchased by the vendor's father in 1955•Mechanically maintained but cosmetically un-restoredFootnotes:Please note the chassis no is I1/111 and not J1/111.Manufactured by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin, the first Aston-Martins (the hyphen is correct for the period) rapidly established a reputation for high performance and sporting prowess in the immediate post-WWI years. Unfortunately, the management's concentration on motor sport, while accruing invaluable publicity, distracted it from the business of manufacturing cars for sale, the result being just 50-or-so sold by 1925 when the company underwent the first of what would be many changes of ownership. The foundations were laid for the commencement of proper series production with the formation of Aston Martin Motors Ltd in 1926 under the stewardship of Augustus 'Bert' Bertelli and William Renwick. Built at the firm's new Feltham works, the first 'new generation' Aston Martins were displayed at the 1927 London Motor Show at Olympia. Like his predecessors, 'Bert' Bertelli understood the effect of competition success on Aston Martin sales and sanctioned the construction of two works racers for the 1928 season. Based on the 1.5-litre, overhead-camshaft road car, the duo featured dry-sump lubrication and this feature was carried over to the International sports model, newly introduced for 1929. Built in two wheelbase lengths (102' and 118'), the International was manufactured between 1929 and 1932, mostly with bodies by Augustus's brother Enrico 'Harry' Bertelli. Aston Martin built 136 cars between 1927 and 1932: 14 on the long chassis and 122 on the short International chassis. A contemporary road test of an International recorded a top speed of 81mph with up to 90mph attainable, depending on the back-axle ratio. The new Aston was soon making its mark on the racetrack, 'Bert' Bertelli and Pat Driscoll winning the Biennial Cup at Le Mans in 1932, one of many competition successes achieved before the International was superseded by the Le Mans and Ulster models. Private owners entered all kinds of competitions, while team drivers included Sammy Davis, Eddie Hall, Cyril Paul and George Eyston. The 'Le Mans' label was first applied to the competition version of the (1st Series) International following Aston's class win and 5th place overall in the 1931 Le Mans race. This conceit was fully justified when the model placed 5th and 7th in the 1932 race and collected the Rudge-Whitworth Biennial Cup. It may, in fact, be the first car named after the Le Mans Race, although many others have since followed Aston Martin's example.'JO 3999' is one of four International-based Le Mans models built in 1931 as Team Car replicas (these should not be confused with the Le Mans model of 1932). Original owner George Hartwell first saw the new two-seater Le Mans on Aston's stand at the London Motor Show in October 1931. However, he wanted a 2/4 seater and asked the Bertellis to copy the slab-tank rear of the '100mph Invicta' to create the required accommodation. In Inman Hunter's book, Aston Martin 1913-1947, Hartwell is quoted as saying: 'After the Show the Bertelli brothers drew out full size the side and rear elevations, which satisfied me and the car was produced.' Clearly displaying its bespoke derrière, 'JO 3999' is pictured in Hunter's book (page 133) and Hartwell's unique Le Mans was also illustrated in The Autocar described as a 'Le Mans four-seater', priced at £675. The AMOC Register records 'JO 3999' as winning the Inter-Varsity Hill Climb in 1931 with George Hartwell, who followed that up by finishing 2nd in the JCC Members' Day handicap at Brooklands in 1932 (his fastest lap at Brooklands was 88.6mph). The Aston appears to have changed hands soon after, the next entry being for 'Laing' in 1933 (3rd in the Inter-Varsity Speed Trial) while later that same year Laing finished 7th overall in the LCC Relay Race at Brooklands. 'JO 399' first came into the current family's ownership when the vendor's late father purchased the car in 1955 for £200. Sold a few years later, the Aston was reacquired in August 1969, just in time to be given to the vendor on his 19th birthday in September '69. Owned by the vendor since then, the car has been kept in good order mechanically but not refurbished cosmetically, so it has a wonderful well-used patina. Ecurie Bertelli fitted a new Laystall crankshaft in the 1980s, and more recently the car has been maintained by Morntane Engineering. A unique example of the rare Le Mans Team Car replica, this well documented, unique and highly desirable pre-war Aston Martin is Eligible for both VSCC and AMOC events. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Perseus (Harry Hamlin) battled Medusa in her Underworld lair, decapitating her so he could use her head to defeat the Kraken. Medusa was designed and created by legendary visual effects artist Ray Harryhausen, who throughout his seven-decade career used stop-motion animation to bring many beloved fantastical creatures to life. This statue was produced from a digital scan of the original Medusa puppet created by Harryhausen for filming. It was displayed as part of the "Myths and Legends" exhibition at the London Film Museum in 2010, where a special 90th birthday celebration for Harryhausen was held in conjunction with the exhibition's opening. The statue also appears in Gilles Penso's 2011 documentary Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan. The highly detailed statue is made of dense biscuit foam with a fibreglass resin skin and a varnished finish. Several snakes are intertwined with its synthetic orange-coloured hair, and Medusa's demonic face features a pair of piercing eyes and a set of sharp teeth. The upper half of her body shows scaly reptilian skin painted in shades of green, and the lower half consists of a coiled rattlesnake tail, painted brown. She has a snake wrapped around her right arm and holds a cream-coloured arrow in her left hand. Medusa also wears a brown quiver on her back, containing three removable faux arrows; the quiver is signed in gold-coloured ink by Harryhausen. The statue is presented on a large rectangular wooden base, designed to resemble stone, although it is not attached. There are signs of wear to the statue's paint finish in places, with marks on the quiver. Some minor sympathetic restoration has been undertaken on the right hand, snakes, and tail. The concept was later used in Desmond Davis' Clash of the Titans (1981), in which Perseus (Harry Hamlin) battled Dioskilos, the two-headed dog. The artwork is rendered in pencil on tracing paper and shows the unarmed Jason charging towards the hellish hound. The piece has tears along the top, a missing bottom-left corner and light graphite smudging throughout. Great War Multiple signed Early RAF. Bachelor's Farewell Dinner and Concert to Henry Joseph Starr, Corporal, RAF. 11 Oct 1918. From his colleagues at RN Airship Station, Polgate. 26 signatures (most identified whilst writing up this note). An attractive and scarce item that is worthy of research. Polgate was the UK's second airship station. part of the Dover Command, was built at Willingdon with the entrance at the Triangle, the present-day junction with Coppice Avenue. It was named Polegate as it was the practice to name bases after the nearest Railway Station, although the entire area was within the parish of Willingdon. Building work commenced in early 1915 and on 6 July that year it was commissioned with one SS airship which made its first flight that day and was soon joined by others. These airships patrolled our waters daily, between Dungeness and Portland Bill, searching for U boats and mines which they could destroy with their bombs. They also accompanied military convoys and hospital ships, which brought casualties home from the front and would radio Morse code to warn these vessels of any imminent danger. Autographs include Matthew John Golightly (238982) Born 20 Mar 1891 at Portsea. ADM 188/424/238982 and AIR 76/186/0/0121 downloaded. Married Florence Grace Larence in 1932 at Portsmouth. Died 20 Oct 1975 at Loughborough. Victor Dodd OBE (218935) Born 24 May 1899 at Fulham. Died 1970 at Macclesfield, Cheshire. Unfortunately, on the 20th of December 1917, while trying to return to base in fog, his airship ran into another one that was anchored in a field. Both airships caught fire and Victor and the engineer jumped out, landing in a snow-covered field. Both were badly injured but survived however, the pilot remained in the airship and died when it crashed to the ground. (Google "The Polegate Airship Disaster" for the full story). A unique collection of autographs and artwork by celebrities and notable figures including pop stars, artists, sports personalities, actors, authors, comedians, designers. The collection was put together by the late Karen Gammon and began life as her contribution to a Millennium Art Exhibition designed to raise money for a number of different charities (nominated by the celebrities). Karen sent a button to each celebrity and asked them to design a piece of art around it. Many of the designs are appropriate for the figure in question and represent the very thing they are famous for. The collection includes: J. K. Rowling (who has sketched three silhouettes flying around her button on broomsticks, one clearly being Harry Potter wearing a scarf); Mary Fedden RA (who has sketched a cat holding her button in a flower); Sir Paul McCartney (who has produced a humorous cartoon with the button as a nose); Dame Elizabeth Blackadder RA (who has used her buttons in a vibrant watercolour drawing of a lizard); Sir Stirling Moss (who has turned his button into a steering wheel); Grayson Perry RA (who has turned his buttons into figures being hanged); Mary Quant (who has incorporated her button into a sketch of a dress); Antony Gormley RA (who has drawn a tiny figure holding up his button); Lord Lichfield (self-portrait taking a photograph with the button as his camera); Nick Park (who has drawn a cartoon of Gromit with the button as his nose); Ronnie Barker (who has used his padlock button in a gag about his wife's handbag); Anthony Green RA (who has incorporated his button into a self-portrait); Phil Collins (who has turned his button into a drum kit); Sir Nicholas Serota (who has depicted his button on a Tate Modern plinth); Dick Francis (who has drawn a horse & jockey jumping over his button); Sir David Jason (who has doodled a wall with 'Del Boy woz 'ere'). The collection, which has been framed, comes with separate paperwork and consent forms relating to the acquisition of the autographs (often signed again), and even press/publicity photographs (many of which are again signed), together with numerous copies of a book that was produced to illustrate and explain the collection, 'Celebrity Button Art - An A to Z of Celebrity Mini Masterpieces', 2010 (with foreword by Bonnie Tyler). In her introduction, Karen states, 'Why art around a button you may ask? I needed a common starting point yet something that would inspire the creation of a mini masterpiece without directing or inhibiting the artist too much. I needed something that was seemingly insignificant by itself but would become an integral part of an imaginative spark of inspiration.' The collection is arranged alphabetically in 41 frames, each frame housing six cards bearing autograph/button, each card measuring 10.5cm by 7cm (the entire frame measuring 41cm by 31cm); the paperwork/consent forms are housed in six box files; the Celebrity Button Art books/catalogues are housed in three card boxesOther artwork/autographs include: Joss Ackland; Jenny Agutter; Peter Amory; Lord Archer; Colin Baker; Jeff Banks; Linda Barker; Sue Barker; Roy Barraclough; Keith Barron; Michael Barrymore; Dame Shirley Bassey; Marquess of Bath; Jeremy Beadle; David Begbie; Sir Tim Berners-Lee; Stephen Beveridge; Maeve Binchy; Roger Black; Honor Blackman; Raymond Blanc; Brenda Blethyn; Patti Boulaye; Peter Bowles; Norman Bowman; Michael Brandon; Sir Richard Branson; Richard Briers; Fern Britton; Pierce Brosnan; Amanda Burton; Jeb Bush; Darcey Bussell; Max Bygraves; Simon Callow; Dame Barbara Cartland; Emma Chambers; Linford Christie; Petula Clark; Granville 'Danny' Clark; Sacha Baron Cohen; Graham Cole; Jackie Collins; Joan Collins; Sir Henry Cooper; Jonathan Cope; David Copperfield; Sir Patrick Cormack; John Craven; Michael Crawford; Bernard Cribbins; Wendy Dagworthy; Jim Dale; Paul Daniels; Alan Davies; Graham Davis; Steve Davis; Dame Judi Dench; Charlie Dimmock; Anita Dobson; Ken Dodd; Deborah Drew; Noel Edmonds; David Essex; Trevor Eve; Mohamed Al Fayed; Sarah (Ferguson), Duchess of York; Anna Ford; Frederick Forsyth; Edward Fox; Paul Franks; Chris Ferdiani; Ben Freeman; Dawn French; Ant Fry; Stephen Fry; Lesley Garrett; William Gaunt; Uri Geller; Susan Georeg; John Glenn; Hannah Gordon; David Gower; Robson Green; Bob Grose; Lloyd Grossman; Gareth Hale; Christine Hamilton; Neil Hamilton; Susan Hampshire; Nick Hancock; John Hannah; Ainsley Harriott; Tony Hart; Nigel Havers; Sir Nigel Hawthorne; Sir Jack Hayward; Tim Healy; David Hedison; Lenny Henry; Jack Higgins; Harry Hill; Katy Hill; Ian Hislop; Peter Howson; Roy Hudd; Patrick Hughes; Gareth Hunt; Konnie Huq; John Inman; Glenda Jackson; Sir Derek Jacobi; Sue Johnston; Lesley Joseph; Handy Andy Kane; Sam Kane; Kevin Keegan; Penelope Keith; Matthew Kelly; Ian Kelsey; Felicity Kendal; Alex Kingston; Michael Kitchen; Jack Klugman; Nick Knowles; Twiggy Lawson; John Le Carre; Jay Leno; Gary Lineker; Desmond Llewelyn;Laurence Llewelyn Bowen; Andrew Logan; Joanna Lumley; Cherie Lunghi; Linda Lusardi; Simon MacCorkindale; Aggie Mackenzie; Mary Elizaebth Mastrantonio; Ally McCoist; Martine McCutcheon; Debbie McGee, Ewan McGregor; Anne McKevitt; Ian McShane; George Melly; Alessandro Mendini; Sarah Miles; Stuart Miles; Albert II, Sovereign Prince of Monaco; Sir Patrick Moore; Desmond Morris; Dame Peggy Mount; Bill Mundy; Nina Nannar; Paul Nicholas; Bill Nighy; John Noakes; Graham Norton; Daniel O'Donnell; Paul O'Grady; Jamie Oliver; Tamzin Outhwaite; Nick Owen; Norman Pace; Jane Packer; Cesar Pelli; Marti Pellow; Gervase Phinn; Jonathan Pryce; Suzi Quatro; Gary Rhodes; Anneka Rice; Sir Cliff Richard; Fay Ripley; William Roache; Anne Robinson; Tamara Rojo; Michel Roux; Phillip Schofield; Jenny Seagrove; Martin Shaw; Tessa Shaw; Jeremy Sheffield; Frank Skinner; Carol Smilie; Nicholas Smith; Jeremy Spake; Tommy Steele; Clive Swift; Chris Tarrant; Gwen Taylor; Simon Thomas; Emma Thompson; Linda Thorson; Alan Titchmarsh; Oliver Tobias; Richard Todd; Philip Treacy; Bonnie Tyler; Rory Underwood; Phil Vickery; Carol Vorderman; Rick Wakeman; Karen Walker; Tommy Walsh; Julie Walters; Zoe Wanamaker; John Wardley; Paul Warriner; Pete Waterman; Ruby Wax; Denise Welch; Anthony Whishaw RA; Richard Whiteley; Quentin Wilson; Gary WIlmot; Sir Norman Wisdom; Sir Terry Wogan; Victoria Wood; Kim Woodburn; Michael York; Susannah York; Paul Zenon; Patti Boulaye; Emma Chambers; Jackie Collins; Steve Davies; Trevor Eve; John Glenn; Paul Merton; Hilary Neiland; Dame Diana Rigg
