Ca. 1848. A very rare Household Cavalry officer's sword. The blade is un-fullered and engraved with rich symbolism, including a flaming grenade motif and the initials LG2, likely to denote the 2nd Regiment of Life Guards. On the inside of the ricasso is the makers mark showing that the weapon was made or sold by Andrews of 9 Pall Mall, London. This mark is known from other contemporary blades. The word proved is engraved on the back edge of the blade. The hilt is engraved with more flaming grenades and a lightning bolt motif. The handle has a fishskin grip but is missing its wire binding, and the guard retains its original tassel. Size: 1022mm x 160mm; Weight: 750g. Provenance: Property of a European collector; Ex. British collection, 1970s-1990s.
An outstanding Second War ‘Relief of Tobruk’ Immediate D.C.M. group of six awarded to Company Sergeant-Major R. Oliver, 1st Battalion, Durham Light Infantry Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.VI.R. (4448623 Cpl. R. Oliver. Durh. L.I.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star, 1 clasp, 8th Army; Italy Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted for display, light contact marks, otherwise good very fine (6) £2,800-£3,400 --- D.C.M. London Gazette 24 February 1942. The recommendation for an Immediate D.C.M. states: ‘At Tobruk on the night 7/8th December, 1941 ‘C’ Coy carried out an attack on the left of the Battalion on Pt 157. Cpl Oliver became separated from the rest of the Coy in the dark. He collected seven men, carried out two assaults on enemy M.G. positions, captured two machine-guns and twenty prisoners and then organised a defensive position with enemy captured weapons on the flank of his Coy. He showed great courage during the operations and was an excellent example to his men.’ On the 3 December 1941 the 1st Durham Light Infantry received orders to support the Border regiment in an attack focused on an enemy held position known as Point 157. If successful the Durhams were then to move through and attack a second position known as Point 162, both positions being on the escarpment east of El Duda. The evening of the 3rd was spent in preparation as the men of 1st D.L.I. were lorried to positions occupied by the Essex Regiment near El Duda. On 7th December the go-ahead was finally received but with one small amendment; the 1st D.L.I. would lead the attack supported by the Border Regiment. At 17:00hrs the men, assisted by scouts of the Essex Regiment, set out for their start line which this was reached at 19:20hrs, zero hour being 20:30hrs. With “A” Company on the left and “C” Company on the right supported by “B” Company and elements of H.Q. Company with “D” Company also following up, the 1st Durhams set off at 20:30hrs precisely in perfect text book order. There was a three quarter moon illuminating the starry sky when suddenly the desert air was filled with tracer and machine gun bullets which all seemed to be heading in the direction of 1 D.L.I. “B” and H.Q. infantrymen found what cover they could in holes and disused sangers. “A” Company unfortunately were caught in the front line of the enemy fire while “C” Company unbeknown to Lieutenant-Colonel Arderne had reached the enemy and had began clearing them. 2/Lt. Bruce Ballantyne attempted to lead a platoon of “A” Company in a move up the enemies flank yet despite their efforts the move failed and 2/Lt. Ballantyne was himself killed. The overall picture however was not good to continue the advance as it was would result in a great number of casualties; with this in mind Captain Jim Gray, the Adjutant, was sent back through the Durham lines in an effort to bring up tanks to support the floundering infantry attack. A short time later through the pitch blackness the British armour was sighted, and promptly fell into the holes and sangers which “B” Company were sheltering in! They managed to haul themselves free and laid down very accurate fire on the enemy positions. Rallied by this, Colonel Arderne gave the order to “B” and “D” Companies to fix bayonets and charge. Following behind the tanks they advanced into the enemy positions only to find “C” Company already there! Led by Captain Adrian Keith, M.C., they had cleared out the enemy and were busily rounding up prisoners. It was at this point that Captain Keith was killed by an Italian who had surrendered but was still in possession of a hand grenade. Corporal Oliver’s impressive gallantry did not go unnoticed and “C” Company without doubt took the full honours for their action that night. When the Border Regiment duly arrived to take over they found that their work had already been taken care of by the Durhams, thus bringing about the relief of Tobruk. Ralph Oliver was the son of Wilfred and Flora E. Oliver (née Cherry) of 27 Gas Street, Hartlepool. Wilfred had himself served with 2 D.L.I. at the outbreak of W.W.1 and was an old contemptible. Ralph was the eldest of seven brothers, two of whom were killed during the war, and attended Brougham Street School. Enlisting into the Durham Light Infantry at the age of 17, he saw pre-war service in India, Sudan and China with both regular battalions (1st and 2nd D.L.I.). He earned the Distinguished Conduct Medal at Tobruk whilst with “C” Company 1st D.L.I. and finished the war having attained the rank of Company Sergeant-Major. In 1948 he attended Buckingham Palace where he was presented with his D.C.M. by the King.

A Second World War presentation wristwatch, its case back bearing the engraved inscription "Presented by Neighbours and Friends to 1st Class Stoker J Stewart, HMS Grenade, who was wounded at Dunkirk", (movement a/f). [HMS Grenade (H86) was a G class destroyer, launched in November 1935 and commissioned in March 1936. Grenade initially served as part of the protective screen, to cover the vessels involved in the evacuation at Dunkirk and it was only on the night of 28/29th May that she was herself sent over to the port. On May 29th, Grenade was attacked by Ju87 Stukas while berthed in Dunkirk. Two direct hits killed 14 with a further four seriously wounded; fire now swept through the ship. Fearing that Grenade might sink blocking the berth, she was cut free from her moorings and drifted into the main channel of the harbour, where the trawler John Cattling took her under tow to the western side of the port, in order to move her out of the way. It was here that she later sank, following the explosion of her magazines during the evening. Credit https://dunkirk1940.org]

A late Victorian silver table grenade lighter, of ball shape on four ball feet, with central screw top wick and two shouldered containers with two taper holders within, both with flaming torch finials, hallmarked by Joseph Braham, London, 1898, approx. 8.5cm high. Gross weight: approx. 172.2 grams (5.5ozt) Further details: tarnished; one taper holder misshapen; marks slightly rubbed; couple of dents to body; general wear.
An early 20th century, late Boer War era sterling silver and possibly BlackBuck horn table lighter, once belonging to Major General Alexander Whitelaw Thorneycroft of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. Featuring a ridged, twisted and polished horn section, fitted with a scalloped collar, and a grenade style spherical lighter fixed upon a rotating gimbal. Fully hallmarked for London 1902, with the makers mark for Joseph Braham. The spherical part of the lighter is also engraved ‘A.W.T. from JM 20th June 1903’, which is the date he married his wife, Rebecca Francis Crozier. Notes: Alexander Whitelaw Thorneycroft (1859 - 1931) had a distinguished military career, and was first commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in February 1879. He saw service in the later stages of the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879, and the First Boer War of 1881. A promotion to Lieutenant followed in 1881, followed by Captain in 1887. By the commencement of the Second Boer war, Alexander had been promoted to Major (Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel), and with the British Government preempting a Boer uprising, Major Thorneycroft was sent to South Africa to raise a corps of troopers. This hastily raised corps became known as Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry, and saw service during the Relief of Ladysmith, and the Battle of Spion Koh. During Spion Kop, Maj Thorneycroft found himself to be the most senior officer still alive, or that wasn’t incapacitated. An award of the Companion of the Order of the Bath followed in 1901, on account of his Boer War service. By November 1902, Thorneycroft was promoted to Colonel, and was back in the U.K serving as Adjutant-General of the 7th Infantry Division in Dublin. Colonel Thorneycroft retired from the army in 1912, retiring to Blandford Lodge in Berkshire, and died there in 1931 at the age of 72. Provenance: the item was acquired in 1931 by a relative of the current owner, who with his wife had acted as housekeeper for Col Thorneycroft at Blandford Lodge. As was fairly commonplace for the time, the couple were offered an item each from the Colonel’s items, and this lighter was one of the items acquired. The lighter has remained in the family since 1931. Approximately 60cm length. Condition: generally good. Good all round patina to the silver, and clear hallmarks. The gimbal mechanism works exactly as I should by always keeping to the lighter part level. A small area of chipping to the underside of the horn section, towards to pointed end, but this is not visible when sat upon a desk, and does not detract at all. There’s a tiny little pinhead dent to the spherical lighter section, but again this doesn’t detract.

TOM SACHS (AMERICAN B. 1966) UNTITLED (9MM PISTOL) Mixed media Signed twice with initials, inscribed, titled and dated 2004 Height inc. base 26.5cm (10¼in.) Provenance: Sperone Westwater, New York Acquired from the above in 2006The internationally renowned artist Tom Sachs has courted controversy for three decades since the display of Hello Kitty Nativity at Barneys New York. Sachs has exhibited at MoMA, the Centre Pompidou, and Mary Boone; he is represented by Thaddeus Ropac and Tomio Koyama Gallery, among others. The artist has also collaborated with Nike to produce shoes that relate to his enduring fascination with space travel and moon landings. The works that accompanied Sachs's rise to prominence in the 1990s, such as Hermès Hand Grenade, married luxury and violence. Though these interests remain prominent in Sachs's œuvre, they begin to diverge: increasingly, high fashion is paired with popular consumer culture, while symbols of aggression are filtered through a hands-on creative process. It is in this vein that the present work embraces postmodern bricolage, literally pedestalising a pistol, which Sachs first improvised in a crude but functional form in 1995. Far from a simple endorsement of the Second Amendment, the mixed media composition interrogates gun culture and the status accorded to these instruments of violence. Few artists are able to sustain such incisive scrutiny of modern culture - fewer still with Sachs's trademark irreverence. Condition Report: Some pitting to the silver base. Glue residue and imperfections to the 'gun', most of which would have been consistent with the original condition. Apart from some light surface dirt, the work is in good original condition.Condition Report Disclaimer
