AN INTERESTING FRENCH TOLE PEINTE BESPOKE MILLINER'S TRADE OR SHOP SIGN EARLY 19TH CENTURY In the form of a red painted and gilded bicorne hat as worn by Napoleon Bonaparte, modern stand hat 25cm high, 64cm wide, 27cm deep In 1732 Dean Jonathan Swift wrote of Dublin's shop signs 'I have not observed the wit and fancy of this town so much employed in any one Article as that of contriving a variety of signs to hang over houses where punch is served'. Before the general spread of literacy and standardised postal addresses brightly painted signs hung outside shops and businesses to advertise the services or goods within. Shop signs are one of the most long established forms of European folk art. The golden age of trade signs was from the late 17th century to the early 19th century. In the late 18th century, many large cities placed prohibitions on the installation of street furniture as streets became more crowded and inhospitable. This, together with the rise of literacy and the spreading of the use of plate glass allowing for elaborate window displays, put an end to this particular form of street art. Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Weathering and paint losses- as per usage and display- painted just to one side- wear to margins, some old rust, interior with vacant interior mount point Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. Wade (Charles Paget, 1883-1956) Six studies of farmhouses in rural France, pencil and black chalk, six sheets between approx. 90 x 65 mm (3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in) and 100 x 140 mm (5 1/2 x 3 1/4 in), presented in one mount, minor surface dirt and light browning, framed, [early 20th century]Provenance:The Wade Collection, from Wade's library, Temple Fortune, North London;Ben Weinreb, London Collection of John and Eileen Harris*** Charles Paget Wade was an English architect, artist-craftsman and poet of Afro-Caribbean descent; today he is perhaps best remembered for the eclectic collection he amassed during his life, a collection which can be seen at Snowshill Manor, his former home in the village of Snowshill, Gloucestershire, which he gave to the National Trust in 1951. In 1919, after service in France during World War I, Wade purchased the estate at Snowshill, which he restored – first the manor house, then the gardens – over the next four years. Having started collecting at the age of 7, Wade eventually built up a collection of more than 22,000 items of furniture, clothing, paintings, and many other pieces which reflected his interest in colour, design and good craftsmanship. He housed the collection in the manor house at Snowshill, choosing to live in a small cottage in the garden. He continued to add to his collection over the years. The objects he collected included musical instruments, clocks, bicycles, and 26 sets of samurai armour.During his lifetime, Wade gained some renown for his creation of a miniature 18th century Cornish fishing village, which he named Wolf's Cove. Wade rendered its houses, harbour, fishing boats and gear, and inhabitants, in 1:10 to 1:12 scale, from wood, straw, plaster, textiles and other materials. Over time, he expanded Wolf's Cove such that it attracted hundreds of visitors a year, including Virginia Woolf, Queen Mary, and the poet John Betjeman. [Wikipedia]

Très rare miroir en faïence de Delft, vers 1680A very rare Dutch Delftware mirror, circa 1680In moulded high-relief with a grotesque mask at the top supported by putti arising from the wild baroque foliage, mirrored scrolling foliage on both sides, the top with a larger round hole and two smaller ones likely for fitting a metal candle bracket, 38.6 cm. x 31.4cm diam. (the mirror a later replacement)Footnotes:Provenance:The Ivan B. Hart Collection;Sold at Rob Michiels Auctions, Bruges, 28 March 2015, lot 103;Private European CollectionLiterature:Aronson, R. and Brouwers, E., Dutch Delftware, The Ivan B. Hart Collection, Aronson Antiquairs, Amsterdam, 2013, no. 3, p. 10This rare mirror is one of only four examples of Dutch Delft mirror frames currently recorded; the other three are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum (BK-NM-12400-95, BK-1959-55).Delftware pieces made for the interior were often based on metal examples, such as candlesticks and wall sconces. This mirror, too, appears to be based on a late 17th-century wooden or metal model, and at least partly influenced by the work of Daniel Marot (1661-1752), the great French-born Dutch Baroque architect, furniture designer and engraver. These kinds of precious objects were often associated directly with the Royal Court of William and Mary, for whom Marot designed the palace interiors at the Dutch Royal Palace of Het Loo from 1684. Exceptional designs and objects were found among the items excavated at Het Loo and listed among the 'Delft porcelain' in the inventories. A courtly poem on the Gelderland Castle of Rosendael by Johannes d'Outrein (1662-1722) suggests that it is highly likely that much of the Delftware was made or designed to Queen Mary's specifications. In the stanza on the queen's closet he refers to 'porcelain vases, which have been made to order for this place by the great queen Mary'. This closet was a small pavilion in the garden of Kasteel Rosendael that was dedicated to Mary and was probably a gift from the Queen to her courtier, Janne Margriete van Arnhem (1635-1721), shortly before Mary left for England. Unfortunately, it was dismantled and is known only from descriptions. The mirrors in Jan d'Outrein's poem were fitted in the wall: 'Het Midelst vercierd met d'heldre spiegelglasen, Waar in sig't kabinet ten tweedenmaal vertoont' (see A.M.L.E. Erkelens, Delffs Porcelijn' van koningin Mary II, 1996, pp.28-29).For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 116

AN ANTIQUARIAN GILT BRONZE AND CHINESE LACQUER-MOUNTED BREAKFRONT SIDE CABINET 19TH CENTURY, OF LOUIS XIV STYLE, THE LACQUER PANELS 18TH CENTURY The marble top above a frieze of foliate scrolls and acanthus above three doors displaying re-used lacquer panels enclosing oak shelves, above a raised plinth centred by a panel with bearded mask and with rosette blocks, on tapering feet with acanthus clasps, one lock stamped Comyn Ching & Co 97cm high, 160cm wide, 58cm deepProvenance: The Hon. Claude John Yorke, and thence by descent This imposing cabinet reflects the antiquarian taste prevalent in England in the 19th century, led by London dealer/agents and manufacturers such as Edward Holmes Baldock who was trading from various addresses in of Hanway Street from 1805 and Robert Hume trading from Berners Street from 1829. Indeed the Covent Garden and Soho areas of London witnessed a huge number of businesses engaged in the trade in new, restored and second hand furniture and works of art, from the likes of Baldock and Hume whose clients included royalty and the nobility, to traders who bought and sold `curios' and others who were little more than dealers in scrap. The trade was fanned by enthusiastic and wealthy and collectors of `antiques' such as William Beckford (d.1844) and the Duke of Hamilton (d.1852), historic house refurbishments such as at Hardwick Hall (1839 - 49) and sometimes hare-brained projects such as the Earl of Eglinton's chivalric Tournament of 1839 offered dealers an easy opportunity to make money, while auction sales of eminent collections brought yet more artefacts to the market. Part of this trade saw new furniture created re-using older element, particularly those items deemed precious or valuable, hard stones, Chinese and Japanese lacquer, carved ebony, boulle and tortoiseshell and even old oak. Makers such as Baldock incorporated these in conventional ways, using newly made pieces and the best are superbly executed. A detailed study of the trade was published by Mark Westgarth, Biographical Dictionary of Nineteenth Century Antique and Curiosity Dealers, Regional Furniture Society Journal, 2009, vol.23. A Regency cabinet of similar type, black and gilt-japanned and incorporating 18th century Kangxi lacquer was sold from Crichel, Dorset, at Christie's, London, 23 May 2013, lot 152 (£22,500 including premium). The attribution to a London antiquarian manufacturer is reinforced by the use of locks marked by the Seven Dials ironmonger Comyn Ching & Co.      Condition Report: Generally good, structurally secure with wear and tear consistent with age and use. There are minor scratches marks and scuffing and some constructional shrinkage cracks. The marble top is in good order but with some repairs, a crack running front to back about 23cm from the left edge and a repaired break to the back right corner. Otherwise some minor edge chips. The ormolu all present, of large scale with good chiselling, overall of reasonable quality. Lacquer panels with typical craquelure and yellowing of surface varnish. but with sensitive conservation they would come alive. Minor lifting to the brass stringing on the left side. There is a 26cm piece of ebonised facing detached to the upright inside the centre door. The carcase made of framed and panelled oak, quite precisely machined and assembled typical of 19th century work. Each door revealing a single shelf. Overall a handsome and robust cabinet.
