Lot 3004

A late 19th century naval officers ceremonial sword by Fenton Brothers, Cutlers to the War Office. The straight engraved blade (79cm) detailed 'Royal Navy' with brass open frame hilt and a wire bound leather grip in steel scabbard. Note: You must be over 18 to purchase this item. Collection must be made in person or by arrangement with a delivery company that provides an age verification service. We do not provide a shipping service for bladed items. Condition Report: The blade is etched with "Royal Navy", a Crowned Fouled Anchor and Victorian Royal Cypher. The hilt, pommel and scabbard appear to be from an Indian Army Infantry officers sword.

A 19th Century Photograph album belonging to Sir Henry David Jones GCB DCL (14th March 1791-4th August 1866) and his wife Lady Charlotte Jones, the album contains at least one photograph by Roger Fenton from the Crimea, photographs relating to Sir Harry's military service, early photographs from the Middle East, the Royal Family, home life, and images from around the U.K., General Sir Harry Jones was educated at the Royal Military Academy Woolwich and commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1808, during the Walcheren Campaign he served in the attack on the Fortress at Flushing, he took part in the Defence of Cadiz (1809), Siege of Badajoz (1812), Battle of Vittoria (1813), Battle of Nivelle (1813), and was wounded leading the Forlorn hope in an assault at the Siege of San Sebastián in September 1813, in 1815 he joined the army under General Lambert in North America following the Battle of New Orleans, he married Charlotte Hornsby in 1824 with whom he had six sons and five daughters, he served during the Crimean War commanding British forces at the Battle of Bormasund (Baltic Sea), and was Commander, Royal Engineers at the siege of Sebastopol, in 1856 he was appointed Governor of the Royal Military college, Sandhurst and in 1859 served on the Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom, he was an early member of the Royal Photographic Society and a friend of the war photographer Roger Fenton, the album is signed to the inside front page by lady Jones and dated 1860, it contains approximately 135 photographs together with several pencil drawings, watercolours, and prints, the photographs include, a photograph of 'Lieut. Genl. Sir Harry Jones & Staff', in the Crimea (taken by Roger Fenton at the British Headquarters, General Jones seated on chair with Lieutenant-Colonel Bouchier, Assistant Adjutant-General, Lieutenant Cowel, R.E., A.D.C., and Lieutenant Jameson, 2nd Life Guards, A.D.C. standing and seated on the steps in front of him), photograph with signature of Prince Albert Edward (later king Edward VII), Queen Victoria reading, Queen Victoria with Princess Beatrice, Prince Alfred with signature dated 21st December 1860, Trinity Church, Brompton, Brompton Barracks 1855, Rochester Cathedral, Castle and Bridge, Royal engineers in full dress uniform with busby's presumably returning from the Crimea, watercolour of the grave of Captain A.T. Jones, 2nd West India Regiment, with photograph of the Captain above ( Capt. Sandhurst, early photographs of Knightwood Oak, New Forest, group photograph of officers and civilian gentlemen, circa 1860 (the officer seated in the middle is Field Marshal Sir John Fox Burgoyne 1782-1871, Royal Engineers, who served in the Napoleonic Wars and in the Crimea served as an official advisor to Lord Raglan, recommending a siege of Sevastopol, he became a colonel Commandant of the royal engineers in 1854), four early photographs from the Middle East including the Pyramids and Sphinx, these appear to be contemporary Victorian copies, 3 of the photos are marked 'A. Schranz' (Antonio Schranz January 31st 1801-July 14th 1865 was born on the Balearic island of Menorca before moving with his family to Malta in 1818, he became a painter like his brothers Giovanni and Guiseppe and is recorded as a Landscape and Marine painter at one time travelling with Lord Castelreagh on his tour of Egypt, Sinai,Palestine, and Syria, producing drawings for Castelreaghs 'Journey to Damascus, one of the worlds earliest photographers he opened the first photographic studio in Cairo in 1848/49 in Pyramids road just minutes from the Great Sphinx itself), photographs of Cathedrals and churches including Salisbury, Durham, Inverness, Whitby Abbey, Holmbury St Mary, and Christchurch, Hants, Mount Snowdon, views of the RMC Sandhurst, Port of Ramsgate, home and family photographs including at Cranmer Hall, Norfolk, (Provenence, Sale of items from Cranmer Hall, Fakenham, at Keys of Aylsham 1980's).
