Charles Adolphus Murray (1841-1907) was the 7th Earl of Dunmore, he was appointed Lord-in-waiting to Benjamin Disraeli's government from 1874-80, and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Stirlingshire (1875-85) and Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Inverness-shire Rifle Volunteers (1882-96). Richard Waitt (Scottish, 1684-1733) Portrait of Charles Elphinstone, 9th Lord Elphinstone (1682-1757)oil on canvas73 x 60.5cmProvenance:Henry Ernest Leetham,By whom bequeathed to the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, York, in 1918Charles, 9th Lord Elphinstone was born, lived and likely buried at Elphistone Tower, now a ruin on the Dunmore estate near Falkirk and Stirling. He became a soldier and served as a Captain in Brigadier Grant’s regiment in the campaigns of Marlborough in Flanders, Belgium. He was severely wounded at Aigremont in Northern France in 1708. In 1711, the regiment was ordered home and he retired several years later in 1720. The present work, depicting Charles in armour, likely dates between 1708-1720.
