Round-topped stela with decoration on two registers; the lunette, featuring a winged sun disc with pendant uraei; the main panel with a frieze in sunk relief depicting the pharaoh wearing the double crown, facing left offering the hieroglyphic symbol for 'fields'; a goddess stands behind him, possibly Isis, wearing a tight-fitting robe and sporting a tall two-plumed headdress, with one hand raised in praise; facing the pharaoh is the falcon-headed god, possibly Horus or Her-wer, wearing a double-crown, and behind him stands the ibis-headed Thoth wearing the Atef crown, both gods hold a was-sceptre; repaired, mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Bosticco, S., Museo archaeologico di Firenze: le stele egiziane di epoca tarda Rome, 1972, no. 58, for an arch-topped stela depicting the pharaoh offering the 'field' symbol to the gods Her-wer and Sobek. 19.45 kg total, 55 cm including stand (21 5/8 in.). (For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price.) [A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website]Acquired in the mid-1980s-1990s. Private collection, Switzerland, thence by descent. Private collection, since the late 1990s. Accompanied by an academic report by Egyptologist Paul Whelan. This lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by search certificate number no.12200-222172. This lot has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database, and is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D’Amato. The overall tripartite composition is comparable to numerous stelae of the Ptolemaic Period and can be dated to the 3rd-2nd century B.C. The decorative lunette and/or sky bands and bold sunk relief winged sun disc are characteristic of this period, as is the fringed detailing of the female’s garment. The offering of the ‘field’ symbol is also a frequent depiction of the stelae of this period, which can be understood as a ‘catch-all’ device representing an offering of all the produce from the fields. Such stelae were often produced as stock products to which clients would have their names and other details added. Therefore, the stela is likely an example of one awaiting purchase. After the purchase, the hieroglyphic labels would be added to the figurative tableau, and a dedicatory text would be carved into the plain rectangle in the lower part. Sometimes, however, it appears that a purchaser could not afford the additional expense of a professionally engraved inscription, and so would scratch a short dedication in the lower panel as seen, for example, in the stela for Horudja from the Delta site of Tanis and now in the Musée du Louvre (inv. no. AF 11682).TimeLine Auctions follows a rigorous vetting process to ensure the authenticity and legality of all items, reinforcing our commitment to integrity and responsible trading. A MEISSEN FLOWER-ENCRUSTED NINE-BRANCH TWENTY-ONE LIGHT FIGURAL CHANDELIER MID 19TH CENTURY The S-shaped branches each suspending flower encrusted drops, unmarked approximately 70 high not including celling fitting, 90cm wideProvenance: Commissioned by George V or Queen Marie of Hannover Sotheby's, The Royal House of Hannover, Schloss Marienburg, 5-15 October, 2005, lot 2852 At the Congress of Vienna in 1814, George III was restored to his Hannoverian property and titles, Hannover having been occupied by Prussia at the behest of Napoleon Bonaparte. George III had been co-ruler of the two territories, King of Great Britain and Ireland and Duke and Elector of Hannover within the Holy Roman Empire. The latter had been incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia by Bonaparte and after his defeat it reverted to George III but now was created a kingdom. In succession through the various sons of George III, Queen Victoria succeeded to the throne of Great Britain and Ireland via the Act of Succession, but Hannover was governed by Semi-Salic Law so had to pass to her uncle Earnst Augustus Duke of Cumberland. Salic Law, a legacy from the days of the Frankish Kings does not allow for succession to thrones, fiefs or titles via the female line. Schloss Marienburg was built by George V of Hannover as a birthday present for his wife, Marie of Saxe-Altenburg between 1857 and 1867. The castle is very much in the Gothic revival fairy tale style so fashionable in Britain, France and the various German states at the time, fuelled by writers such as Sir Walter Scott and Willem Hauff, longing for a return to Medievalism native to Northern Europe and away from classism. Other notable examples exist such as Schloss Lichtenstein in Wurttenberg, built by 1842 and Schloss Hohenzollern completed 1867 but perhaps the most celebrated is King Ludwig of Bavaria's Schloss Neuschwanstein. The chandelier was ordered from Meissen by the Queen for her salon at Schloss Marienburg where it was photographed in situ in 1867. This Rococo revival style was the height of fashion at the time and the aforementioned Ludwig would fill his new castles with Meissen lighting a decade or so later. As Meissen is also in Saxony and the premier German porcelain manufacturer it would have been the manufacturer of choice and one could argue that Meissen is and was the finest producer of porcelain in the world. The Sotheby's ten-day sale in 2005 sold more than twenty thousand objects accumulated by the Electors and later Kings of Hannover, Dukes of Brunswick and British monarchs achieving more than forty million Euros. Condition Report: Historic damage, chips, repairs, and losses. Carol MCDOWALL (1955) Yellow Secret Acrylic on canvas, signed and titled verso, 92cm x 107cm. Carole McDowall studied printmaking and sculpture at Putney Art School from 1973-1978, during which time she had work chosen to exhibit at the Royal Academy summer exhibition, 1975, and later she gained a Fine Art Degree in Painting from the Sir John Cass School of Art in the mid-1980's. She was a part of a group of artist based in and around Porthleven in the late 1980's. At this time, Porthleven had become quite a centre for artists. The Acme studios provided 6 large studios some of which were subdivided and shared, with Jeremy Annear amongst the painters to take a studio there, with Bryan Ingham also moving to a studio at this time. The OYOYOY dinner party almost became an institution amongst Porthleven artists in the late eighties. It usually took place with about eight or ten artists in a first floor flat in Penair House overlooking the mouth of the harbour (which incidentally was rented to the artists by Daphne McClure) or at John and Carole McDowall’s home. The evenings consisted of a really good meal, lots of Bulgarian red wine and intense art discussion usually winding up just before dawn! These discussions were passionate, heated and noisy and on these occasions one of the artists was appointed to chair. There were many creative spin-offs from these evenings. One of the consequences of these evenings was the formation of the Cobalt Group, which formed around 1989 to challenge and question the given work processes of its members in daylong workshops at the Acme Studios in Porthleven. The members of the group were Carole McDowall, Ralph Freeman, Roy Walker, Russ Hedges, and Jeremy Annear. Carole and her associates have been referred to as third-generation Cornish Modernists, began by Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth and following on from the likes of Peter Lanyon and Terry Frost. Other artists referred to in this third generation include Anthony Frost, Micheal Finn, Tony O’Malley, Jeremy LeGrice, Daphne McClure, Jeremy Annear, Russ Hedges, Ralph Freeman Steve Dove, Roy Ray, John Clark, Clive Blackmore, Simon Averill, Roy Walker, Bob Devereux, John Emmanuel, Bob Crossley and Andrew Lanyon.
Good history folderLargely original conditionThe Fiat X1/9 represents the culmination of a model that was both revolutionary and iconic in the realm of compact sports cars. Introduced in 1972 and produced until 1989, the X1/9 was designed by Italian styling house Bertone and engineered to combine practicality, affordability, and enjoyable driving dynamics. One of the X1/9's defining features is its mid-engine layout, a rarity in affordable cars of its era. By placing the engine behind the driver and ahead of the rear axle, the X1/9 achieved a near-perfect weight distribution, translating into great handling and cornering stability. The car’s angular, wedge-shaped design was strikingly modern when it debuted, with clean lines, pop-up headlights, and a removable targa top that allowed for open-air driving. Bertone branding was prominent in later years as Fiat handed over full production to the design firm in the early 1980. The X1/9 was powered by a 1.5 litre inline-four engine, producing around 75 horsepower. While modest by today’s standards, the lightweight construction (approximately 2,100 pounds) ensured nimble performance and responsive handling. A five-speed manual transmission added to the driving engagement, making the X1/9 a joy on winding roads. Despite its sporty nature, the X1/9 was remarkably practical. It featured two luggage compartments-one in the front and one in the rear-making it more versatile than many other sports cars of its time. The removable targa roof panel could be stowed neatly in the front boot, ensuring an open-air experience without sacrificing space.First registered on 29th July 1988 this Bertone built Fiat X1/9 presents in delightful condition. The red coachwork is largely original as is the grey velour interior, both are in very good order. The engine starts immediately when requested and we are advised this Fiat drives with no known faults. The owners’ manuals are present as are two sets of keys. There is a significant history file with this low mileage X1/9 confirming that this has clearly been a well looked after car. Also supplied is a V5 registration document and a current MoT test certificate valid until 3rd July 2025. The Fiat X1/9 remains a desirable classic, with owners appreciating its unique combination of affordability, Italian flair, and mid-engine precision. Though production ended in 1989, the X1/9 continues to captivate with its timeless appeal and connection to a great era of sports car design. Supplied new in CaliforniaBeautifully rebuilt as 911 Carrera 2.7 RS EvocationOriginal five speed manual gearboxBuilt for comfort and to be usedThis left hand drive 1976 Porsche 911 2.7 Carrera S fitted with a five speed manual gearbox, was originally sold in California where it spent it’s life until it was purchased by the current owner and imported to the UK in March 2018. In its first year in the UK, an RS Lightweight conversion was carried out which included bodywork repairs and a full bare metal respray in 2018/19 which was carried out by OSC in Chessington. As the car had spent its pre-UK life in San Diego, California, there were only two minor areas of corrosion that needed addressing. The front wing extensions that house the indicators are metal and genuine Porsche parts and the rear engine cover is metal with a fibreglass ducktail spoiler fitted. The front bonnet has been replaced with a genuine Porsche period ‘long bonnet’. The car has been built to Lightweight rather than Touring specification, so both the front and rear bumpers are fibreglass as they would have been on an original car. Finished in Viper Green which is an original Porsche period factory colour, the paintwork is in very good condition throughout. The wheels are original Fuchs alloys with extremely rare deep-dish rears. The interior is largely original but some tasteful upgrades have been made as the owner wanted a usable classic with the external appearance of a '73 RS rather than a full replica. The steering wheel is the original, although it has been retrimmed in Nappa leather, as indeed has the dashboard. The present owner also added genuine 70's era Porsche electric seats with twelve-way control on the driver’s side and eight-way on the passenger side. Along with the seats, Porsche electric window mechanisms and switches and a modern face off radio were fitted to make the car more usable and comfortable. The original seats, manual window winders and mechanisms are available should a future owner wished to return the car to stock. The owner reports that the engine runs well and as the car started out as a 2.7 Carrera S, the engine is largely similar to a genuine RS. There have not been many upgrades to the engine, other than the correct twin exhaust system fitted and a replacement oil sump with oil drain. The warm-up regulator and the fuel injection distributor have both been rebuilt by renowned experts KMI. The fuel injectors have been replaced by Porsche specialists GT-One in Chertsey, who also completed all the other engine work. Servicing has been carried out on an annual basis and the most recent service replaced the oil, filters, plugs and leads. The four Continental tyres have done less than 200 miles. The car is supplied with a V5 registration document, its original owner’s manual/service book and two sets of keys. Accompanying this is a Porsche letter confirming the car has matching numbers, a file containing invoices from GT-One for the work completed and all of the invoices for parts and KMI work. There are service stamps in the warranty book that run to the early 2000's when car was parked up by its previous owner in California and mileages match from the last stamp to the car's odometer. • Built with extreme attention to detail by Lamb Precision Engineering• Unique tribute to the Harry Miller built Indy cars of the 1920’s & 1930’s• Ford 4.3 litre flathead V8Harry Miller was a prominent motor racing engineer, best known for his innovative work in the early 20th century. Born in 1875, Miller made a significant impact on American motorsport, particularly in the world of open-wheel racing. He founded the Harry A. Miller Company which produced some of the most advanced racing cars of his time. Known for his craftsmanship and engineering ingenuity, Miller introduced several key innovations, including the use of supercharging and lightweight components which helped enhance both performance and reliability. Miller's cars were a fixture at prestigious events such as the Indianapolis 500, where his designs were favoured by many top drivers. His influence extended beyond the racing circuits as he played a pivotal role in advancing automotive technology. Although his career was marked by periods of financial instability, Miller's legacy lives on through the high-performance machines that are still admired by car enthusiasts and collectors worldwide. Harry Miller’s cars achieved many notable victories in various prestigious events, one of the most famous was in 1922, when the Miller-designed car, driven by Jimmy Murphy, won the Indianapolis 500. Murphy’s victory was the first time a car built by Miller’s company triumphed at America’s great race. Throughout the 1920’s and into the early 1930’s, Miller’s cars were dominant in American open-wheel racing. His machines helped drivers achieve podium finishes in various major races, including the National Championship series and other prominent events in the United States. These victories solidified Miller’s reputation as a key figure in racing engineering, influencing the design of cars for decades to come. The car we have here, the ‘Craftsman’ is a totally unique tribute to the legendary Harry Miller built Indy cars of the 1920’s & 1930’s. The car was built by Lamb Precision Engineering of Salisbury, Wiltshire, a company best known for their astonishing motorcycles, having won numerous shows worldwide for their work. It is important to note that the car is by no means a replica of any specific Miller built car but is instead a fitting tribute to the engineering and design styles of Harry Miller, built utilising modern-day technology. The car is powered by a 4.3 litre Ford flathead V8 built around an original 24-stud block and incorporates many performance parts, such as high lift camshafts, flowed and ported heads and a stroked crankshaft. The engine was built by Royal Kustoms, one of the leading specialists in flathead V8 engines. The invoices on file for the engine alone are in the region of £25,000 and it is estimated to produce around 170bhp, more than enough for such a lightweight car! The car has been fitted with a five-speed gearbox, making it eminently useable and our vendor reports it is very perky and has no trouble in modern day traffic. The bodywork is all aluminium and is of incredible quality, absolutely no corners have been cut anywhere throughout the car. Lamb Engineering developed their own Nixie tube speedometer, and the axles, brakes and hubs are all Lamb developed and manufactured in house. Miller were well known for front wheel drive and four-wheel drive race cars, the ‘Craftsman’ is rear wheel driven but Lamb have designed a geared watts linkage on the front axle, as a twist to the style of Harry Miller. Understandably, the car draws a crowd everywhere it goes, and we would highly recommend viewing as the car really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated, it is a work of art. This truly was a no expense spared labour of love build, an estimated 4,000 hours have gone into the car, as a display of what Lamb Engineering were capable of. The build was completed in 2018, only a few hundred miles have been covered since, and the car looks as good today as it would have when completed in 2018. Supplied to auction with a V5 registration document and a history file containing various invoices from the build. Consigned by Fraser SmithInterested parties should note that the car is sold with fintail style exhaust pipes which extend just beyond the rear wheels on both sides, not the short pipes shown in the photographs.BUILT WITH EXTREME ATTENTION TO DETAIL BY LAMB PRECISION ENGINEERING • UNIQUE TRIBUTE TO THE HARRY MILLER BUILT INDY CARS OF THE 1920’S & 1930’S• FORD 4.3 LITRE FLATHEAD V8

An exceptional Kongo "Nkisi Nkondi" figure" Few African sculptures are as iconic as human figures covered in hardware. Such figures, variably called “nail fetish”, “power figure”, or “nkisi nkondi”, were long considered byEuropean observers as quintessential expressions of witchcraft and superstition. They are, in fact, sophisticated medical and legal remedies of the Kongo peoples, a cluster of ethnic groups thatlive at the mouth of the Congo River in Central Africa. The Kongo made such figures to housespiritual beings that could be activated in order to intervene in human affairs. They were adjuredto heal illnesses, settle disputes, take oaths, punish wrongdoers, and protect the community. In its original setting, this sculpture functioned as the vessel for a spirit. It is called nkisi, a termthat designates both the ancestor or nature spirit that inhabited it, and the container itself. Nkisican also be translated as “sacred remedy”. A nkisi-receptacle can take a variety of forms, like abasket, a shell, or a glass bottle. A container in the shape of a human figure with pieces of iron iscalled a nkisi nkondi, “a hunter spirit-vessel”. Such a power figure used to hunt thieves, bewitchers, and people who had broken taboos or who did not keep their word. Each nail, screw, and blade driven into the wood corresponds with a specific request for action addressed to thenkisi-spirit, whose supernatural powers were invoked and stirred up. The figure now constitutes anotarial record, so to speak, documenting in iron all the pleas, agreements, oaths, curses anddemands for vengeance that it was presented with and of which it took care.Works like this resulted from the collective vision of several people rather than a single artist, and changed dramatically in appearance over time. A sculptor carved an empty figure in wood, which a ritual expert subsequently loaded with sacred medicines. These magical substances werelocated in the square box on the belly and in the charge on top of the head, both sealed in placewith resin. Spirit-embedding medicines were necessary to attract and fix a nkisi in the vessel, andoften included earth from a grave site. Once “contained”, spirit-admonishing medicines wereused to entreat the spirit in a controlled manner so that it could act for the benefit of an individualor a community. Over the course of decades, priests, healers, and users added substances to thefigure, to trigger its powers, to seal agreements, or to remind the nkisi what to do and where togo. Today, the figure is covered with shreds of cloth tied to nails or bundled into small packages, and with pierced shells, fruits, seedpods and tops of gourds attached to metal rings or hangingfrom pieces of rope. The attachments also include different kinds of glass beads, as well as smallcarved wood pieces, one of which may show a stylized face. The additions are so dense that thefigure’s left arm, with the hand resting in the hip, is no longer visible. All the body poses and attachments of a nkisi nkondi have specific meanings. The raised rightarm, which once held a knife, is at once defensive and offensive. The four fingers of the right hand, forming a circle, with the long thumb pointing upwards, refer to the earth and heaven, thussymbolizing the unbreakable bond created by the spirit when activated. The combination of onehand upraised and the other in the hip is common among persons of authority. It signifies theability to review a situation and act accordingly. The figure’s open mouth indicates, among otherthings, the need to feed the spirit in order to encourage it to perform a particular action, as wellas its eloquence in administering justice. The mirror that covers the abdominal box and the glasseyes, made from imported materials, were meant to enhance the nkisi’s clairvoyance, necessaryto perceive the human and the spirit worlds. Many attributes of a power figure make sensebecause of sound associations and word puns in the Kongo language. For instance, one of theshells attached on the front, which appears also on other nkisi nkondi, has a spiral form. Such aform is called nzinga, a word that evokes luzinga, “long life”. The various seedpods attached tothe figure have not yet been identified and we do not know their indigenous names. Yet we canassume that these names, too, reveal some desired outcome. This nineteenth-century nkisi nkondi, with its exceptionally dense and well-preservedattachments, belonged to the Belgian botanist and folklorist Jean Chalon (1846-1921). Hementioned it in a publication from 1920. The power figure has not been altered since it leftAfrica. The countless additions testify to its long-lasting success as a protective guardian andpunitive hunter."Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers45 cmProvenanceBelgian botanist and folklorist Jean Chalon (1846-1921).LiteraturePublished in CHALON, Jean. 1920."
